Topaz Rags Sounding like the perfect accompaniment to an old-school detective movie featuring lots of nudity, this track packs such an uber-atmosphere it leaves a thin trail of cigarette smoke behind it, with its emotional and haunting jazzy-blues shuffle painted in almost shamanistic colors. There's definitely an influence here from fellow Californians such as Pocahaunted and Sun Araw , in that awesomely vamped Echo Park sound. Topaz Rags - Sightings ( mp3 )

The Big Pink may well be one of the next big things — the U.K. outfit's debut album "A Brief History of Love" certainly delivers the goods — but the quartet's L.A. debut on Wednesday night at the El Rey Theatre was less than rosy. ||| Photos by Laurie Scavo It was all smoke-and-strobes and a little bit smoke-and-mirrors as the the band — the brainchild of Milo Cordell and Robbie Furze and touring as a four-piece — largely overplayed their moody shoegazer pose [...]

Photography by Rita Lino I've been listening off & on to the new Espers album III for the past week or so, really loving it, but having one pickle of a time describing it to myself It's a little bit this, a little bit that, a little bit of nothing and everything and blah blah blah. So, I thought to myself, maybe there's a word I'm missing, that magic word, that sums [...]

An architect company based out of Barcelona has begun production on the Galactic Suite Space Resort. That's right in 2012 you might be able to take a vacation in space for only a mere 4.4 million dollars. The hefty price includes a three-night stay at the hotel, which is in space, and an eight-week training course that takes place on a tropical island. Shit I'd do it just for the eight weeks on a beautiful island and it would cost me less than 4 million bucks. While in space, [...]

Here is the Top Ten and I'm rather pleased with it. There's a bit of dance music, some esoteric British aptitude/attitude and experimentalism, plenty of guitars and plenty of synthesisers, some hearts worn on sleeves and some curious meanderings that keep you guessing. These are recordings I return to again and again, old friends and worthy cohorts. I could cope quite happily with just these ten LPs for company and ne'er feel bored or unchallenged. Deciding which Sufjan Stevens album was my favourite proved tricky but the sheer class and majesty of Michigan won through. 1. Sufjan [...]

Indie Shuffle presents the follow up to Essential Sounds of Autumn: Part One , with ten more songs from albums that we like to pull out when the leaves begin to change. Similar to our last edition, you'll find that we've continued the slow-down, switching from indie pop to folk, from glam rock to instrumental ambient. Where you might find a change is in our featuring Aesop Rock's Labor Days , autumn-relevant mainly for its exploration of the plight of the working class as we head into a tougher season. From here, you have three [...]

In this series at Largehearted Boy, guest contributors review music books. Josh Christie shares two of my greatest passions, beer and literature, on his blog Brews and Books . Josh Christie of Brews and Books reviews Nick Hornby's latest novel, Juliet, Naked : Considering how much Nick Hornby writes about music, it feels appropriate to compare his newest book, Juliet Naked , to a greatest hits album. After all, all of his favorite topics [...]

Every season seems to have a mood set by the changing scenery. Fall is especially pronounced: Time to pull out the sweaters, drink more tea, enjoy the pumpkin sightings, and watch the trees change colors. As the air cools, the days grow shorter, and our hands grow colder, so too do we adjust our accompanying album shuffle. We switch from indie pop to folk, from glam rock to instrumental ambient. Indie Shuffle contributors have compiled their favorite albums for autumn. So what did we pick? Below are our favorite fall-time albums, with our favorite song from [...]

photos by Lori Baily LA Record ( via ): When Teenage Jesus and the Jerks played in New York City last year , it was always set up as a one-shot deal. Yet here we are. Lydia Lunch (vocals/guitar): I never thought I would have done reunions--it's ridiculous to me. It's Thurston Moore that's to be blamed with his no wave book that he put out last year. A few [...]

All photos by David Greenwald A few weeks ago, I took a walk through West Hollywood late one night, needing to clear my head. I listened to Thom Yorke's The Eraser - the Radiohead frontman's all-but-forgotten 2006 debut. I'd loved it at the time, but a few years later, many of the songs seemed more penciled in than inscribed in ink, slight, brittle tracks lacking the widescreen grandeur of Yorke's day job. That was before he played them live. In the second of three shows in Los Angeles - his first-ever solo [...]

STRIKING OUT ON HIS OWN The independent record business in New Orleans was always volatile and precarious. Starting with the first wave in the mid-1950s, numerous local labels formed and folded, with most lasting just a few years, if that. The opportunity to score a big hit was always there to tempt entrepreneurs; but the odds against it were steep - like a shot at winning the lottery or picking a winning horse out at the Fairgrounds racetrack - unless, of course, Allen Toussaint was writing and producing the [...]
