Overlooked in Ohio: Vol. 3 (Greenhorn)

Overlooked in Ohio: Vol. 3 (Greenhorn) Editor's note: "Overlooked in Ohio" is a feature in which we ask an Ohio-based artist/music enthusiast to tell us about a few bands (past or present) from the state of Ohio that deserve some love. Our second installment comes courtesy of Bela Koe-Krompecher , a staple of the Columbus rock scene and head of the soon-to-be-revived Anyway Records - former home of Gaunt, The New Bomb Turks and countless other "important" Columbus bands, including this volume's subject, Greenhorn . ...This is a long one, but do yourself a big favor and read the whole [...]

Danach zog [...]

The Sounds of Soft Machine

Soft Machine was the product of the same remarkable cultural shift that gave us electric Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix, the moment when the formalistic silos that held different genres of music suddenly collapsed and rock, jazz, blues, Indian music, and modern classical could mix with whatever happened to be on the turntable.

Scottish Georgics

Scottish Georgics These days, my life, my anxieties, my hopes, my whole scene, could be summed up, or put in place, or undermined by its own essence, with any number of vaguely agricultural get-up-and-go aphorisms. The early bird gets the worm. You reap what you sow. The sun also rises. Make hay while the sun shines. Ecclesiastes. Etc. It's either birds, worms, seeds, sun or hay. Throw in a little "Muck is the mother of the mealbag" and you've got it covered. Shit be elemental. But talk of shit and talk of sun and talk of hay always makes [...]

Bloodshot Records BBQ coming to Brooklyn w/ Exene Cervenka, Bobbby Bare Jr & more (full lineup, videos, dates)

Waco Brothers - Bloodshot Records BBQ - Madison, WI
A pair of reunions ( Moonshine Willy , the Blacks ), a local upstart ( Scotland Yard Gospel Choir ) and a staggering turn by the Texas-born Alejandro Escovedo highlighted Bloodshot Records ' 15th anniversary celebration at a scaled-back Hideout Block Party on Saturday. The daylong event, which took place under blue skies on an outdoor stage 25 yards from the door of the treasured dive, attracted a sizable crowd for performances by a number of former and current Bloodshot artists. Almost every song in the Blacks' [...]

Pure Ecstasy Pure Ecstasy are from Austin, Texas where I've spent one of the best weeks of my life and one of the worst. They have just released their first 7". [BTKN004] Tom Phonic – Don't Be a Delimiter (2009)

[BTKN004] Tom Phonic – Don't Be a Delimiter (2009) "It's sad that electronic music gets cut into subdivisions, stacked up in silos, and confined to genre ghettos with the names hyphenated together to fit whatever the new style is that just came out this week. In his new release, Tom Phonic ignores all of this to make an eclectic and creative record that opens the party doors wide. The album, "Don't Be a Delimiter" plays with styles but it sounds more like pointillism than collage. All the micro-parts come together to make a smooth whole, full of surprises without sounding like a mixtape. "Skizzer," track 3 on the album, [...]

Polaris 09 Shortlist: Great Lake Swimmers Lost Channels

(photo: Ilia Horsburgh) The other day on CBC Radio 2's Drive , Rich Terfry posited that the sound of Tony Dekker's voice can melt women's hearts, and coupled with the languid musical accompaniment of his band, Great Lake Swimmers , has the power to win over both the hearts and minds of the female persuasion. Maybe that's where Dekker got the idea to name his band's second disc, Bodies and Minds , which leads me to wonder what the inspiration was to name his current disc Lost Channels [...]

"B" Curve Super Groups

While they probably never aspired to the gold standard Super Group status that Cream enjoyed, over the years some folks have thrown in their lot with other similarly situated folks (read: modestly successful/past their prime/second or third banana in a successful group) and formed "B" curve Super Groups. Sort of like if The Green Lantern , The Atom , and Hawkman formed their own Justice League (I've been watching a lot of superhero shows with my 4 year old lately). Anyway, which of the following second- and third-tier Super Groups [...]

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERSLost Channels

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERSLost Channels recording tunes in grain silos, venerable acoustic sweet spots and the wonderfully named Singer Castle on the equally evocatively titled Dark Island beside the St. Lawrence River isn't just a dippy gimmick with this Canadian outfit. part of the Great Lake Swimmer albums immediacy and impact comes from their ability to choose and inhabit a space with only the most minimal technological intervention. filled with a spellbinding mix of country-tinged melancholy and a poetic economy that resists saccharin statements, or maudlin indulgence, the ghostly voice of lead Swimmer, Tony Dekker crosses vast oceans of loneliness and [...]

Madison Concert Announcement: Arizona + Weinland

I've been a long-time supporter/admirer of Portland's Weinland . In 2006, then going by John Weinland, put out one helluva record, Deversville , and followed it up with last year's La Lamentor . Both remarkable, both come with my highest recommendation . I begged them to play in Madison last year, but only succeeded in getting them an early show at the High Noon Saloon opening for the Silos. The few that showed up were wowed, and I ended up shooting a [...]

Seth Godin: Social Influence

A few weeks ago, I posted on how social influence is more of a factor in our musical tastes than we like to admit. Seth Godin, marketing genius and DIY-pioneer, takes that idea a little further. In the '70s or '80s you listened to a song because "everyone else" was also listening to it. That's the definition of pop music... Now, "everyone else" is not defined by where you live or what radio station you listen to. It's defined by which horizontal or vertical slice of the world you connect yourself with... So [...]
