This largely instrumental project should not conjure up images of black cats and goblins. Instead, it should bring to mind a dusty, Americana version of the Dirty Three. Comprised of members of the Brooklyn-based old-time revivalists O'Death, Skeletonbreath has been called "Halloween music". In actuality, however, this largely instrumental project should not conjure up images of black cats and goblins. Instead, it should bring to mind a dusty, Americana version of the Dirty Three. Violinist Bob Pycior explores his instrument in ways he never could within the confines of O'Death on Eagle's Nest, Devil's Cave, the trio's second overall [...]

This is the week where former pop idols come back out to play. Eminem , Andre 3000 , Green Day and Tori Amos all have new albums out. Don't mind me; I'll be the guy in the music nerd corner listening to mewithoutYou , Passion Pit , that collection of Iron & Wine b-sides, Jason Lytle (of Grandaddy) and The Field instead. And yes, I'm aware that Green Day came out on Friday. That doesn't make [...]

John Vanderslice's seventh solo album, Romanian Names , is yet another combination of masterful songwriting and flawless, ambitious production from one of America's most underrated singer-songwriters. Speaking of songwriters, Iron and Wine releases Around the Well , a 2-CD collection of rarities and unreleased material. The new release list is filled with other worthy releases. From what has already been sent my way, I can strongly also recommend Au Revoir Simone's Still Night, Still Light , [...]

DRINK UP BUTTERCUP ANNOUNCE TOUR DATES AND 73 Born in a Buck's County barn on a frigid winter night, Drink Up Buttercup has gained an international following in only one year's time. After being kicked out of their practice space for disturbing the horses, Drink Up was soon besieged with praise in publications like Philadelphia Weekly and in sites and blogs such as Stereogum, Daytrotter, RCRD LBL, CMJ, Ear Farm, and The Music Slut. The Fishtown Spirit called Drink Up the "reigning darlings of the underground press," and said, "It's almost ludicrous that a group of kids could [...]
Skeletonbreath @ Cake Shop (Ernest Jenning Showcase): I don't know how I caught this band, I think I was just in the right place at the right time, but Skeletonbreath are an impressive three piece. Playing instrumental, progressive music led by an insane violinist generally isn't the way to the Top 40 charts, but then I don't think a band called Skeletonbreath care much about something like that.

![How Does CMJ Choose Which Bands Get In? An Idolator Special Report [Idolator Goes To Cmj]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1314521_lg.jpg)
Just yesterday, intrepid reporter Kate Richardson asked a very pertinent question about CMJ 2008: "Who are all these bands?" Up until very recently, I worked as a publicist for an indie PR firm, and I know a ton of small acts because of it. Some I worked, some I tried to work, some I researched, and some I know from competitors and colleagues. I also read/skimmed nearly every magazine, indie Web site, and blog out there, particularly looking at coverage of small bands. Plus, I'm in a few bands myself, [...]

It's that time of year again, when bands both big and small converge upon New York City for a debaucherous , music-filled five days...that's right we're talking about the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon. Spanning Oct. 21 to Oct. 25, there's just too much to see. We'll do our best...this isn't our full time job. Come on! (in Gob voice.) Stark has enjoyed watching certain acts from all over the nation strive for immediate, Black Kids-like fame. Alas, they're not all that lucky. From Nashville to Chicago to NYC, Stark has highlighted [...]
