Female-trio Wetdog join the ranks of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls carrying on a tradition that began with bands like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney in the '90s. Whether the U.K. ladies would appreciate the Riot Grrrl tag is unknown, but they recently toured with The Slits so we're in the right ballpark. Certainly they share a similar esthetic: buzz-saw guitars, surf bass-lines, and shouty vocals reminiscent of Thowing Muses' Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly give Wetdog the same underground feminist punk vibe. On the video for "Lower [...]
NPR's Monitor Mix Blog has posted a roundtable discussion conducted by Carrie Brownstein, formerly of Sleater-Kinney , in which representatives from Merge Records , Matador Records , Kill Rock Stars , Saddle Creek Records and Jagjaguwar discuss the role of a record label in a perpetually changing marketplace. Topics touched on include the culture surrounding the digital age, the resurgence of vinyl, file-sharing and more. Check it out here .
Say what you will about NPR's music coverage--and yes, Jody Rosen's DORF Matrix should be part of what gets said--but former Sleater-Kinney guitarist/vocalist/badass Carrie Brownstein's Monitor M... Continue reading "Indie Roundtable: The Role of the Record Label in 2009" >

Former Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein keeps involved with the music industry most notably through her Monitor Mix blog for NPR. Brownstein recently pulled together representatives from Kill Rock Stars, Saddle Creek, Merge, Matador, and Jagjaguwar to talk about the role of record labels in the changing music industry. A rep from Sub Pop was unable to participate. The group, which included Brownstein, one rep each for Saddle Creek, Merge and Matador and two reps each from Jagjaguwar and KRS, pointed to iTunes as one of the clearest markers for change in the industry, especially [...]

Question: Who says women can rock without sucking? Answer: People who listen to Sleater-Kinney. Wrong. Women who rock almost always suck. Yes, even Sleater-Kinney sucks. The Raincoats, on the other hand, never sucked. Their eponymous debut album from 1979 is heralded as highly as a post-punk album could be - the 1994 reissue on Rough Trade featured liner notes by Kurt Cobain. It's got an awesome cover of "Lola," and a mixture of punk, folk, and lo-fi garage that has won the hearts of many. Of course, always the contrarian, I prefer the group's second album, [...]

Jambands.com published a number of new features yesterday including Brian Robbins' chat with Jim Weider , Mike Greenhaus' conversation with John Medeski and Greg McLoughlin's (of BuzzUniverse ) heart-warming story . As much as I enjoyed those articles, there's one piece that jumped out at me - David Paul Kleinman's The Carrie Brownstein Project . As you might recall , Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein spent one week listening to nothing but Phish in an effort to figure out why so many people either love [...]
Carrie Brownstein : Aside from putting out good music, what's the single most effective thing a label can do to get people to buy their music? Gerard Cosloy : Not sure what the single most efficient thing would be (other than, you know, the Pitchfork 9.1), but getting people excited is never easy to quantify or predict. [...]

Carrie Brownstein-former Portlander, Sleater-Kinney guitarist, and Phish fan -conducted an excellent round-table interview with a few of today's most influential independent record labels for her Monitor Mix blog . The loose conversational format is essential reading and the contributors-Mac McCaughan from Merge, Maggie Vail and Portia Sabin from Kill Rock Stars, Gerard Cosloy from Matador, Chris Swanson and Darius Van Arman from Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian/Dead Oceans, Robb Nansel from Saddle Creek-shed a lot of light on the state of the modern record label, and what the future holds. While it's not all doom and gloom (hooray [...]

MP3: Sleater-Kinney - Entertain #11 - Sleater-Kinney - The Woods Sub Pop Records 2005 Joey On Album: This album still rocks harder than anything in the past couple of decades. Sleater-Kinney went out beyond on top, closing the curtain on the best album they ever made and maybe that Sub Pop could ever put out since. "Entertain" is the ultimate fuck off song to the music industry at the time and, what a surprise, it still applies today. Download this album. [...]

"While we might be irked that our favorite band has sold a song to VW or McDonald's, we can instantly decontextualize and remove that song from its annoying commercial counterpart. When we don't buy full albums anyway, when we don't care about album sequence (which is all about intention) or look at the band's artwork or the label they're on (again, all intentional decisions), and when all of the songs we want are free-floating in the ether untethered, then advertisements aren't a source or means of "selling out." Instead, they're the new radio. [...]

025. En Ventura. "Avant" Los Gandharvas It's the start of an amazing band and I'm not sure they even know it. Well, they probably did when they recorded this, 'cause it's about as thrilling and self-conscious as it can get. Listening to "Avant" just makes one angry they're playing around with other projects instead of focusing on the truly outstanding stuff. Note the vocals; they drive this piece with razing heights, brimming only as it is necessary, rock advancement. JSB [...]

Welcome to part one of GIMME TINNITUS' Best Songs Of The Aughts where we look back on the best songs of 2000-2004. Back when all the "best of the decade" whoopla started earlier this year (with Pitchfork's Best Of ), I began thinking about the songs I would have blogged about had I actually been blogging (or let's say posting about music on an angelfire page) way back in 2000. I sifted through many tracks to come up with this list, and I hope it helps you reconnect with some tracks you may have forgotten [...]

Frank Yang There are many things to like about Leeds trio Sky Larkin , not least among them their wonderfully sweet and spiky debut album The Golden Spike , but what I think I like most is how much of a good time they're clearly having. On record, on stage, in their videos, everything Sky Larkin is permeated with a genuine, unaffected sense of fun - no brooding angst or overamped giddiness, just the natural reaction to three friends in their early 20s getting to travel around the world playing rock [...]
