Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada There are many ways to tell a story -- words, music, film, paint -- and artists no longer have to choose just one. Case in point, the "multi-dimensional" indie release 'Out of Our Minds' by Melissa Auf der Maur , who grew up in Montreal before '90s rock stardom swept her away to play bass for Hole and Smashing Pumpkins . Three years in the making, there's an 'OOOM' song, forthcoming album, comic book, website and [...]

Colorado's Monolith Festival is in trouble. Organizers of the three-year-old event, plagued the past two years by fractious Rocky Mountain weather, told fans in an e-mail "the future of the festival is very grim," and that they have "been unable to secure any options" that dig the fest out of its financial hole. Included was a plea for potential buyers/investors. [Full text of the letter after the jump.] Meanwhile, Bonnaroo announced its ninth annual event will be held June 10-13, 2010, near Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale at noon Nov. 27. Meanwhile, only 148 days [...]

photos by Matthew Taplinger It's A Trap : What does the name "A Camp" actually refer to? Niclas Frisk: We just decided that we would go up to the woods and do some songs, do some drawings, bake some bread and record some music. At some point Nina said that we were having a camp in the woods. And at the same time we were shopping in a supermarket and saw this maple syrup with [...]
Filed under: Video Back in September, we reported that Billy Corgan had found a replacement for original Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin after a quick open casting call. Corgan's choice of 19-year-old Portland, Ore. native Mike Byrne came as a huge surprise -- but in the following video, we're given a glimpse into the audition process that resulted in the eyebrow-raising pick. The documentary footage shows the wide-eyed teenager living out the thrill of a lifetime as viewers are made witness to [...]
After a few dates in the States, Fanfarlo return home to the UK in the new year for a short UK tour including a headline date at London's ULU on 12th February. While in America the band recorded a new 7-track EP for iTunes, which will be made available exclusively via the platform early next year. Featuring their counter-intuitive cover of Smashing Pumpkins' 'We Only Come Out At Night', the EP also includes deconstructed readings of six tracks from their album 'Reservoir', among them a Krautrock take on 'Comets'. The [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News When A Camp 's Nina Persson sang, "Now we're gonna party like it's 1699" at her band's show on Tuesday night, she was only half kidding. With plume-adorned microphone stands, an elegant grand piano, sunset-colored lamps and dark blue mood lighting, New York's Le Poisson Rouge was decorated more like an old-fashioned cabaret than a Manhattan music club. Persson, best known as the singer for Swedish band the Cardigans , fit right in with a lacy black-and-gray dress, feathered headband, and [...]
Billy Corgan has been acting erratically in recent times. He performed some execrable jams at Smashing Pumpkins shows, cast aspersions on the H1N1 virus, set up a spiritual website, and was even rumored to be dating Tila Tequila. What better way to deal with all these demons than a bout of public psychoanalysis? On Saturday (Nov. 14), Corgan met with Morgan Stebbins at the Rubin Museum in New York, who gave him a thorough psychoanalysis. "What about confronting the monster?" Stebbins asked, in a key moment [...]

Plenty happened to the world in 1989 - there's your 20 years, mathematicians - from the celebratory fall of the Berlin Wall to the tragic massacre in Tiananmen Square and huge earthquake in San Francisco. With my vague recollection of the general time period as opposed to the specific events, it's always interesting to dig back and see how history remembers the details. OFFICIAL SITE [...]
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside (2000) Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris have got to be the best married team of directors to ever walk the planet. Steven "Pav" Pavlovic is founder and director of international record label Modular, which represents many of the names in the music industry right now: The Presets, Cut Copy, Ladyhawke and Van She, to name a few. I started out managing bands, then booking local venues around Sydney and then moved into promoting tours for both local and international bands, some of which [...]

Whenever a re master comes out I think about all the time that has passed since first hearing the record. My boss at an outdoor science school burnt " Aurora Borealis " for me in 2004 when it first came out. He's a pretty sweet dude into some pretty crazy stuff. I figured it was going to be reggae since everything else he listened to was. I had no idea who Cloud Cult was except for what my boss told me. Something about an organic farm and all the profits from the project going to various earth [...]

In her persona as Dee Dee, guitar-slinging frontwoman of SoCal garage-rockers Dum Dum Girls , Kristin Gundred has gotten in touch with that little girl who used to sing along to pop classics. "I've always been a fan of more straightforward pop music, and of all the oldies," she says. "I probably know all the songs on oldies radio." The singing served her well as drummer-vocalist of Grand Ole Party , the soul-rock trio that busted out of San Diego in 2007 and released their debut "Humanimals" in 2008. But with the demise of [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. M. Thomas Gammarino's debut novel Big in Japan is a surprisingly funny romp through rock music and Japan that isn't afraid to tackle big issues. Ron Currie, Jr. wrote of the book: "In Brain, Gammarino has created a perfect hero for the Age of Anxiety. Propelled by the author's knack for both pitch-perfect dialogue and startling metaphors, the reader [...]
