Dreamy indie pop quartet, The Sundays , had a uncanny knack for crafting charming, innocent and introspective tunes in th e early 1990s. The band was f ormed in London in 1987 by mutual friends and partners, Harriet Wheel er and David Gavurin at the University in Bristol. The Sundays were heavily i nfluenced by Th e Smiths and [...]

Silver Columns I am not sure if it is still hush as to who Silver Columns actually, in case it is let's just say that they're two well known faces from Fence Collective . More importantly what you need to know is that they sound amazing, imagine Jimmy Somerville fronting Hot Chip and you're half way there. Their debut single, 'Brow Beaten' is free to download over at the NME , while you can grab a copy of their remix of Peter, Bjorn & John's 'It Don't Move Me' from their [...]
It's unlikely that Morrissey is having a hugely enjoyable time on his current tour. First, he was hospitalized. Then, he was hit by a flying cup of beer and called a premature halt to a concert in Liverpool. On Tuesday (Nov. 17) this week a further incident occurred in Hamburg, when Morrissey made an uncharacteristic outburst toward a fan. Now, a video of the altercation has emerged. It is alleged that the fan in question yelled "fuck you" at the former Smith singer after he made a joke about hamburgers, and the clip begins [...]

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]
I was thinking of a few of my NYC pals Kevin & Cindy, who spearhead an '80s cover band called The Fades that played a gig at LES' Fontanas on Thursday. It got me to remembering mainstream 80s music, much of which I have not listened to in a while (exception Billy Idol - never out of style on my record player). In the mid 80s, I was mostly listening to American indie/alt/college rock (REM, dBs, Replacements, Husker Du, Soul Asylum, Talking Heads) or British wave (Bauhaus, New Order, Cure, Smiths, U2, Echo & the [...]

Hurricane Bells "Tonight is The Ghost" ( Vagrant , 11.10.09 Digital/ Feb. 2010 Physical) "This Year" Reflects the collective depression of our country right now. A perfect New Year's Eve song. "This Is A Test" The answer to the depression and complexity and constant spinning is simplicity... R.E.M. Influence. "I Can't Remember" A cry for a return to youthful bliss and innocence. Again uncertainty and anger abound. "Tonight I'm Going to Be Like A Shooting Star" Near traditional folk building into a full blown rock sound... Romance now gone [...]

Everyone's favorite movie about the 80's has to be The Wedding Singer. It is kind of unfair to include this in great 80's soundtracks because it could choose from any and all 80's songs but it is as far as I am concerned a greatest hits collection of awesome 80's hits. The movie was made in 1998 and basically sparked a new love affair with the previous decade. It pretty much was the inspiration for VH1's I love the 80's series and also turned the Wedding Singer into a successful broadway show. Kind of weird how that happened. But the [...]

We all believe things come and go in cycles and if anyone is complaining about The Mary Onettes sounding too 80s, they shoud really search their souls. Swedes have a knack of tugging at our heart strings in recent years and its no different this time with The Mary Onettes. Being under Labrador Records mean their label mates include The Legends , Sound Of Arrows & The Radio Dept. Wonderful company. In all brutal honesty, they have not exactly changed much after their [...]
actor from davidshanesmith on Vimeo . David Shane Smith - Beauty Force from Gato Blanko on Vimeo . As I've said before , David Shane Smith's most recent album, Cloud Pleaser , is filled with avant-garde folk songs that peer into a decaying future. It's also his best album to date and one of the better albums by a local artist (um, despite the fact that he now lives 3000 [...]

By Michaelangelo Matos Indie isn't a genre any more than alternative was, but it denotes something important about the music in its tent -- where it came from, where it might go. ( iStockPhoto ) In a sense, the word "indie" crept up on the '00s. It didn't stage a hostile takeover on American rock fans [...]

Known for his highly literate lyrics on his solo work, along with his time spent in the Auteurs and Black Box Recorder, Luke Haines has a new album out called 21st Century Man . Jarvis Cocker's oddly priapic solo release this year, Further Complications , was mostly disappointing, but for those looking for a witty, smart and musical Cocker-like album for 2009, they should definitely check out Mr. Haines' new work. Neil Young wrote Southern Man as an anti-slavery missive about the American South, and with his new album, Haines [...]

This band were recommended to us and so I thought I'd open it up for discussion. I think they show real promise so I thought I'd let Schonberg and Sas have a listen and see what they thought. Schonberg thought Mansfield Holiday had elements of Art Brut and Pigeon Detectives, perhaps lacking the wit and catchy choruses of those two. However he did say that "any band that quote The Wedding Present and The Smiths are alright by me." Sas felt they needed to work on their lyrics more, feeling no connection to them. I think they show potential and [...]

Lots of artists sample but it's the samples chosen that matter. Sub Sub's "Jaggernath" samples the intro of Weatherall's epic remix of My Bloody Valentine's "Soon". Sub Sub meanwhile are the dance band that would become the rock band Doves. If you only know Sub Sub from their "Ain't No Love Ain't No Use" smash, listen to Jaggernath to understand where Doves came from. Sub Sub will probably be always known as the band that Doves used to be. However, in the early '90s Sub Sub was one of [...]
Radiohead - The Headmaster Ritual (The Smiths)

Anoten: The Drums . Me he estado [...]
The Cribs, still comprised of three brothers and a Smiths guitarist, have a new video for us this week taken from their latest album 'Ignore the Ignorant'. Besides the presence of Johnny Marr, the album is also notable for its live recording technique which saw all four members of the band performing together in the same studio room, hoping to capture the excitement and raw power of a live performance on record.
The life and works of Fela Anikulapo Kuti has already garnered quite a bit of attention in recent weeks, what with news that the coming year will see the remastering and reissuing of all 45 of the Afrobeat superstar's titles. But the big just bigger thanks to this brand newly surfaced tidbit: Jay-Z and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith have joined the producing team of Fela! , the new Broadway musical about the musician. As the New York Times reports, Fela! represents the first time that [...]
Scheduling problems prove too difficult for The Smiths frontman.
The Cribs , who until being joined by Johnny Marr were an all-brother trio, will begin their first North American trio with the former Smiths guitarist this coming January, in support of their fourth record Ignore the Ignorant , which Marr helped to write. Tour dates are below. The brothers Jarman, plus Marr, also have a new video out for their second single, "Share the Same Skies." The video is obviously green-screened in a fairly amusing way, with the group performing in front of grainy, fast-moving footage, sometimes in forests and occasionally in [...]
