I'm New Here's opening two minutes will stop you dead in your tracks every time you hear it – even if you repeat it over and over again, and you will. The intro 'On Coming from a Broken Home' beautifully ushers in the record on a wave of electronic murmurs and submerged synths before Gil Scott-Heron 's voice, that voice, gets a few things off his chest. This is his first record since Spirits in 1994 and the last 16 years haven't been kind – a seven-circle spiral of jail, addiction and illness that's just about reduced [...]

Lets get something out of the way. Yes, the Soft Pack was the band formerly known as the Muslims. It's the exact same band. And no matter what you feel about the name change, its here to stay and has nothing to do with their San Diego beach-brand of easy garage punk. So get over it! Besides, the name change seems to all make sense now. No way could they have released this album under their previous moniker. Their debut release was full of pissy, stripped-down rock 'n' roll that landed them somewhere between the Dead Boys, the [...]

Joseph Smith was either a prophet of God or a charlatan. He was considered both a man chosen by Jehovah as a modern-day oracle who would lead humanity back to the One True Church and bring about Gods Kingdom on earth, and a philandering con man who abused the trust of his gullible followers by taking a second-rate novel and using it as the basis for his cult of personality. He was a charismatic leader who upon receiving his first Revelation in 1832, managed to spread a new brand of Christianity around the world in just a few short years. [...]
We told you I'm New Here includes a cover of the Smog song it references. After streaming the collection , we know it also samples West's "Flashing Lights" in the intro and outro. THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE LIVEBLOGGED, SQUID BRAINS!!

This Moment in Black History Public Square Smog Veil If you're looking for a ripping, shredding, and rocking good time in 2010, then look no further than This Moment in Black History's Public Square. More diverse, more melodic, and way more listenable than their previous releases, Public Square showcases keyboardist/vocalist Chris Kulcsar, guitarist Buddy Akita, bassist Lawrence Daniel Caswell, and drummer Lamont "Bim" Thomas at the top of their games. "Forest Whitaker," "About Last Night," and "MFA" have that old school Ohio garage punk [...]

As a sombre woodwind ensemble arises from instrumental opener Time Xone like the first rays of sun over a bomb-ravaged ravine, you'd be forgiven for mistaking Jack Barnett's These New Puritans' second long player for yet another scorched Sufjan Stevens orchestral experimentation. Following the generics and incoherency of debut LP Beat Pyramid, Southend-on-Sea's prime purveyors of dismantled disco were in need of a divine needle and thread to sew together the frayed seams of their expansive innovation. And as Hidden crawls out from enough sonic industrialisation to power Salford's social clubs for a wasteful weekend, the art rock [...]

Byrds - Precious Kate [ buy ] Roger McGuinn's lone highlight from the Farther Along sessions, I referred to it in my recent Clarence White post as a beautiful earthquake song that sounds like it was written with Jeff Tweedy in mind. Lest there be any confusion, I didn't mean that McGuinn was penning tunes for a 4-year-old Tweedy. Rather, that it sounds like the kind of song Tweedy could've written during his classic Being There/Mermaid Avenue/Golden Smog/Summerteeth run. Like Farther Along itself, [...]

This Great Soundtrack really takes on one of the best. 2000's High Fidelity starring John Cusack. This movie was amazing in so many ways. It for one is based on the excellent book by Nick Hornby and seems to really capture the audiophile in his own habitat. John Cusack of course nails the role as the self deprecating man who seems to love his music more than anything else in his life. Complete with a myriad of mixtapes this movie is excellent. The songs that were chosen to be in the movie only enhance the greatness of this film. A [...]

Ooh, another biggie. I've been an enormous fan of Joanna Newsom after seeing her support Smog at the Conway Hall in London some years back. Having never heard her before, we were all perplexed by this winsome lady in full Renaissance garb strolling onto stage and playing a harp beautifully whilst wailing in an unconventional manner. You Rawk! Which is lovely if you like that sort of thing. Which, unbeknownst to me beforehand, I did. Isn't music great? [...]

Photo courtesy of our tight bros at Electricmustache.com It's hard to say anything clever about Turn Back O Man , Phoenix's premier gothic-Americana combo, when the guys have said it all themselves. Their bio boasts comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Nick Cave, labels the band "a group of sexy, dangerous, incredibly intriguing men," and name-drops a laundry list of acts the members have shared the stage with, including M. Ward, Giant Sand, the New Pornographers, Calexico, Magnolia Electric Company, American Music Club, Neko Case, Califone, Devotchka, Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Smog, Pernice Brothers, My Morning [...]
[Photo: Laura Ciekot, Stranger Dance archive] Along with some guy named Jack Black, Tenacious D 's Kyle Gass has given the world musical treasures like "Inward Singing" and "Cock Pushups." Gass has also spent the last eight years praising the rock gods with with his other band, Trainwreck . The five-man act does rock and roll with Skynard flair and, duh, a comedic twist. Trainwreck's first album, The Wreckoning , was released in December. Calling from Sherman Oaks, CA, Gass talked with Stranger Dance about his [...]

Foxy Baby - Driving at Night You can really see the LA skyline from Sam Mehran's red convertible, somehow still glowing through clouds of alien-green smog. How do those murky key shifts and those thicccckk reverby guitar cruisers actually sound like driving at night? When those dazed window gazes morph in and out of focus making the headlight stream look like a mass space ascension, when you can feel the residual FM radio frequencies and 1988 chart toppers blowing through yr hair and seeping up through the miles of concrete freeway; nights and roads [...]

Nowadays, emcees are lauded for being hungry for success. But in the 90's emcees were just hungry for some food. Word on the street that O.D.B had thoughts of calling himself O.C.B. Ice Cube "It Was A Good Day" No barking from the dog, no smog And momma cooked a breakfast with no hog I got my grub on, but didn't pig out Finally got a call from a girl wanna dig out [...]
