Billy Jam says: New Jersey explorer, writer, photographer, filmmaker, welder, artist, skateboarder, avid Passaic River canoe traveler, graffiti lover, urban anthropologist, prankster, high school dropout, WFMU listener, Weird NJ contributor, and as he calls himself "run of the mill trespasser" are all titles befitting Wheeler Antabanez who will be a guest on WFMU today (Nov 20th 3-6pm) on Put The Needle On The Record when he will talk about his passion - New Jersey, especially the rundown abandoned funky parts - and take phone calls from listeners on exploring the abandoned buildings of [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Lydia Millet is one of my favorite writers, and her first collection of short fiction, Love in Infant Monkeys marries celebrities with animals to great effect. These keenly written interactions of human and animal move these tales forward and offer rare insights into the human psyche as well as our celebrity-obsessed culture. The Los Angeles Times wrote of the book: "Lydia Millet's first [...]

Here are the crib notes to what's been happenin on the Free Music Archive (if you haven't been keeping up on the Free Music Archive via twitter , facebook , RSS , or the regular ol' home page . Feel free to chime in with more FMA rec's in the comments! :: The FMA's Anti-Pop Consortium Remix Contest kicked off on Monday, and we've already received some pretty cool entries that we can't wait to share. Once again it's time to look back into the past. This mix starts with two covers and it even has a remix of a Passion Pit song. Luckily, the remix is by Pollination . Just what was November 2008 like? It was a little like this… Downloadables: Banned From The Roxy (mp3) by Jeffrey Lewis We Didn't Start The Fire (mp3) by The Forms Focus (mp3) by The Forms [...]
I'm gearing up to see Devo on Friday and have been revisiting the classic era of synth-punk, a genre the band had very much to do with pioneering during their earlier years. The genre combines the intense, guitar-driven fury of punk rock with often sloppy and simplistic synth mashing. Though the instrumentation may be the same, synth-punk has little in common with new wave, the fluffier, more pop-driven counterpart. Synth-punk was often gritty, poorly recorded, nasty, and powerful as sin. With that in mind, let's touch upon a few genre classics, both new and old. [...]

By Oliver Wang Mainstream R&B radio, retail and video industries never had cause to pay retro-soul much mind until Amy Winehouse demonstrated its commercial potential. ( Sean Gallup / Getty Images Entertainment ) In the early 1990s, two brothers and some friends in Munich formed the Poets of Rhythm, a band inspired by the "deep [...]
by BBG A pale and heavily photoshopped David Pajo returns from church As previously discussed , Until The Light Takes Us is the much talked about documentary chronicling the Norwegian Black Metal scene, which after months of anticipation, is FINALLY getting a theatrical release in NYC on Dec 4th (you can catch it at Cinema Village). Featuring a killer lineup of interviewees (Fenriz, Hellhammer, Frost, Abbath, Harmony Korine, and even the elusive and now free [...]
Nat King Cole's sugar-swirled songs echo through Walmart walkways lined with stockings and ornaments. Price-drops of epic proportions are slated for a Friday after Thanksgiving that is sure to leave at least one Midwesterner trampled to death. It's with these staples the holiday season descends upon us and I turn once again to the annual duty of procuring a Christmas wish list from which my grandparents will glean inspiration. But this year is much, much different from the last... sigh ... for I received " The Wire " box set on Christmas last year. What more does [...]

David Gray stopped in Seattle for a night I'll never forget. This was one of the last stops in the U.S. for new album tour, Draw The Line so it looks like you'll have to head to Europe to see him now! The opener was Lisa Hannigan , who has worked with many musicians in her career but is perhaps most recognizable from the days she collaborated with Damien Rice. She came out with her debut, Sea Sew , in 2008, and it's fantastic. Her voice is powerful, but her stage [...]

Somewhere along our last European tour we were in Berlin and our good friend Voitek (spelled Wojchiech, believe it our not) from 3 Channels aka Catz 'n Dogz told us it was time to go to dinner. So to dinner we went, and when we got there we met Jay Shepheard . Jay is from the UK, but recently made the pilgrimage to Berlin along with so many others in search of dance music's holy grail (which we think is actually somewhere in NYC!). Jay is a kick ass DJ and solid producer [...]

Two major news outlets, NPR and CNN, are covering in varying yet similar fashion the handful of Chinese bands coming to the US, both wondering if the whole Communist stigma will affect the Western-influenced bands' reception in the US. As long as the music sounds good, right? NPR: America is used to exporting its culture. It's called soft power, this ability to dominate the tastes of people in other countries. So an American band touring in China isn't such a big deal. But a Chinese rock band taking the stage in New [...]

The Modern Skirts play three shows in our area this week. They'll be at Schubas in Chicago on November 18th , Mad Planet in Milwaukee on November 19th , and the Project Lodge in Madison on November 20th . Please take this chance to catch these guys live if you can. If you have not yet heard their fantastic 2008 release, All of Us in Our Night (that's the awesome album art above), please add it to your collection. You won't be disappointed. Speaking [...]

La route semblera si courte maintenant... Thanks Andrea ! This time next week, Len & I will be en route in a 10' U-Haul from San Diego to San Francisco to embark on our next great adventure. I put together this mix to help ease the long drive up the coast of California. Hopefully these songs move you along and get you through a daunting task, as well. (Via Andrea Inspired ) Tracklist: 01 The Dovers \ What Am [...]

"I think that possibly maybe I'm falling for you." Earlier Landon Pigg was mentioned in a music commercial post. If "Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop," was played a general consensus would state that the song is from a ring commercial on television, even though Pigg has released other singles from his second album LP . Many of the artists featured on television are known by their one song, and not for their real musical talents. Luckily, I'm here to clear that up. Landon Pigg's new album, [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2009 PEACHES, AMANDA BLANK, & JESSICA 6 @ TERMINAL 5 610 West 56th Street Manhattan, NY 10019 $25, 7PM Jessica 6's performance at The Box felt a little bit like a strip show, but the band might actually be sort of tame compared to the Terminal 5 headliner tonight, Peaches. Check out after the jump for more shows going on tonight--AND check out a lit of shows going on during the day as well (even though CMJ is over, Saturday afternoons seem to still rock). [...]
