by joel chaffee (picture by daniel boud) Sherlock's Daughter , with all five musicians playing or otherwise cavorting sound from their instruments, were very loud. The November 19 show at Pianos in Manhattan was intense with volume. Given that these deafening adventures were intermingled with vocals both delicate and dominating, and melodies as catchy as a cold, there were no complaints. [...]

Mumford & Sons: Sigh No More I don't usually care for bands with banjos, and I come across a lot of groups that have spent too much time watching O Brother Where Art Thou and not enough time writing great songs. UK band Mumford & Sons , despite touting banjos and looking like they're ready to hop boxcars, don't fall into that trap, as they've come up with one of the more solid set of tracks to be released this year. Sigh No More [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK Two of Sheffield's most high profile sons Richard Hawley and Arctic Monkeys ' Alex Turner joined forces at the Mencap Little Noise Sessions at the Islington Union Chapel in London last night (Nov. 19). The pair shared the stage during Hawley's headlining set to perform to a version of Arctic Monkeys' 'The Only Ones Who Know'. Speaking of the collaboration, Hawley told NME how easy it was to team up with Alex Turner. [...]

I can't get over how many people pitch up to watch features screened by the Cheltenham Film Society . I trotted over to the Bacon Theatre on Tuesday to view, at the invitation of J, a Brazilian production, Linha de Passé and was stunned to witness throngs of gentlefolk flocking into the building. I genuinely believed there was something else on at the complex; I'm so used to watching films at Gloucester's Guildhall in an audience of twenty or so (on a good night) that I was thrown by such a multitude. About 250-300 cinema lovers attend [...]

Our friends at Daytrotter just posted a 5-song session including the unreleased "I'm Not The Man I Thought You'd Meet." I caught Cory last night supporting Brendan Benson in Milwaukee. His set was the highlight and his band has never been tighter. Catch them if you can. Until then download the 5-song Daytrotter session . Frank Yang Q: Without a new record to promote - Mr. Love & Justice has been out for close to two years - what reason did Billy Bragg have for staging an ambitious cross-Canada tour ? A: Who cares? Any time you get the opportunity to see Billy Bragg live, you take it, no questions asked. Of course, I say that having missed his last three appearances in Toronto - the September 2006 show at the Music Hall for not one but two weddings, [...]
'Winter Winds' is the latest single from Mumford and Sons' splendid debut album Sigh No More . They've released a lovely little video for it. Check it out here.

The third installment of the New Orleans Indie Rock Fest is this Friday and Saturday and we are of course a proud sponsor. However, with me in New York, I wasn't too sure about the full details this year so I decided to talk to Mark Heck with the collective over AIM about it. Wesley Swinnen: Hey man. Can I interview you on AIM for some words about the next Indie Rock Fest this weekend? Mark Heck: sure WS: So whats new this year? or should [...]
Juan Son recently confessed he never liked Porter and that he doesn't like Mermaid Sashimi anymore, whatever he's planning to do next will be interesting to hear. I see him going back to rock edges; although it's clear he loves pop music (I guess he can be more exuberant in it). His solo album is aging quickly, I still find it remarkable but it's nowhere near the transcendence of Porter's Atemahawke . But no matter what, the guy is creative and has one of the most striking voices in music (it never stops surprising me), it's so [...]
For those that thought that the year was over and no more relevant releases were going to be released, may I bring your attention to Blackroc . The unlikely collaboration between the native sons from Ohio ( the Black Keys) and some of the world's best MC's (Mos Def, ODB, Ludcaris, RZA, Jim Jones) brings grimy instrumentals with grimy lyrics to formulate one polished product. The Damon Dash project isn't overproduced and the mutual admiration of all parties involved is felt on the breath of every word and sticky guitar lick. The S/T album , [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]
