Since basically the summer, the music world has been eagerly awaiting MGMT 's sophomore studio effort. Over that span, they ramped up that anticipation by teasing festival-goers with news songs , describing the material by saying "sometimes it just doesn't feel natural ," and having Spacemen 3's Peter "Sonic Boom" Kember produce it . Even if you hate "Kids", though we don't know why you would , it's hard not to be intrigued by what duo of Andrew James VanWyngarden and Ben Martin Goldwasser have up their sleeve. As announced today (via [...]

In honor of the return of this Australian trio to New York, here's the full MP3 of their transcendent performance from my radio show back almost exactly one year ago (why do they keep leaving the warmth of the southern hemisphere?). For the uninitiated, the Necks hail fron Sydney, and since 1987 have utilized the piano/bass/drums format in a singular, unorthodox fashion that has left them uncategorizable, yet critically-acclaimed and in high demand from jazz, ambient, and avant-rock festivals. The trio of Chris Abrahams (piano) Tony Buck (drums, percussion) and Lloyd Swanton (stand-up bass) have performed their sprawling, [...]

Two particularly cool things concerning Thee Piatcions to shout about this month. The Italian Psych/Garage foursome are wandering in for two London shows on the wave of new valuable material filtering through. The current demo's pursue a wider, more escalating sound while still managing to retain those edgy 60`s Garage beats. As Thee Piatcions evolve towards a new timespan , steadily dancing towards their own forbearing age of Aquarius, elements of crushed button-down paisley and recent years of electric psychedelia are all being utilized to present a more varied musical landscape. The electric guitar is [...]

K Krauty, spaced-out, bluesy improv that hits hard. In the same vein as Parson Sound or Can, these guys have really nailed the art of weaving improv in and out of catchy riffs, really sweet." AQUARIUS RECORDS "This Portland-based psychedelic rock group play heavy – almost Swedish – style repeat-o raunch in a mind-erasing style that makes you think of a less benign Harvester/Trad Gras/Parson Sound crew or maybe the whole Loop/Spacemen 3 scene. Two-chord drug jams that move between levitation and heavy gravity." VOLCANIC TONGUE L inks; [...]

Here's a big thanks to all who came out yesterday for the Beachland Sunday Brunch, and a bigger thanks to Cindy and Mark and the rest of the staff at the Beachland for allowing me and my brother in rock, Jeff Sierputowski, to provide your Sunday munch-time soundtrack. We had a great time, and some great bloody mary's, and I hope you had good times, good food, and good booze, too. Beachland Sunday Brunch Playlist: 1.24.10 1. by way of dipping my toes back into the blogwater, here's the shoegazing mix i posted a while back, repackaged to match the other compilations i've done recently. here's whast i said last time: shoegazing as a music genre has popped in and out of fashion since its media inception around 1990. but these days it seems more popular than ever, with various blogs, compilations and new bands dedicated to celebrating and replicating the layered sounds popularised by just a handful of bands. shoegazing will always have a special place in my music collection because its [...]
Following the theme set by the excellent new Beaters single, we have been grooving (in the privacy of our own home) to the fuzzed-up, mutant rockabilly stomp of Austin three piece The Woven Bones.Proudly wearing their badges of influence on their sleeves you can hear Link Wray through to the Jesus & Mary Chain by way of the Velvets, Neu, Spacemen 3, and the Ramones. It all comes together in a

About a week ago, I spent a couple of hours on YouTube looking up a bunch of space rock bands I was unfamiliar with, like Tomorrowland and Fuxa and Auburn Lull. What I came away with was an even greater appreciation of the genre and the moods it evokes, as well as a clearer understanding of how space rock fits into the history of psychedelic music as a whole. Thus, in the hopes of increasing appreciation for the sort of forgotten genre and of exploring the reasons for its demise (as well as its interesting resurgence in odd places like [...]
Guitar revolutionaries rejoice, The N.E.C provide monolithic pitched ear candy. Indie drone submerged with Jesus And The Mary Chain splashed with Spacemen 3. Generally 80`s psychedelia was considered the retro forerunner to the more commercial shoegaze genre we`re subjected to lately, The N.E.C nicely misplace the throwaway pop and produce at times, chaotic layered fuzz. Although complicated, the dominating back beat flows superbly, giving direction and grace to their laid back vocals. In the meantime, I`m sure the seven track release `IS` can obtained from contacting the band directly, the buying links should be up soon. [...]
Why aren't we living in Sweden? While the prospect of great bands coming from there is hardly new, it would seem that 2010 will be the year of the Swedish invasion once again. Mono Stereo aim to be on board for the voyage and will certainly find their way into your heart. Shimmering guitars, throbbing bass lines and vocals that manage to rise above the beauty to add an atmosphere of dreamy bliss. While they rightfully acknowledge their Ride and My Bloody Valentine influences, we hear Postcard and Loop references that set them apart [...]
Look, we're as excited about the new Vampire Weekend album as you, really we are. Hell, we've spent the last two weeks posting YouTube clips on our Facebook page of the band playing "Cousins" on Letterman, Conan, et al. Seriously. But if we were here telling you what you already know, we might as well be, um, something that rhymes with "witch cork." So instead, let's look a little further afield at some striking new sounds from a well worn but bad-ass bluesman, a psychotic psychedelic cult fave, an unexpected indie artiste , and an art-folk enchantress. All in [...]

The first awesome album of 2010 is about to drop from a group of guys you're probably not familiar with. Hopefully that changes soon. Meet The N.E.C. , an acronym for Natural Extension Concept. Their shit is enlightened. The group's 103 EP was listed in our Year End List 2009 , wherein The N.E.C. was referred to as "the southern response to No Age." That's a good reference point, as is fellow Atlantans Deerhunter, though The N.E.C. maintains a more acute and strictly defined approach to space punk. The N.E.C. has concocted a beautiful, cohesive album with Is , [...]
Back in November, we told you about The Brian Jonestown Massacre 's forthcoming 10th album, and left you with a strange video stream and an unconfirmed tracklist (which is largely unchanged). Now the psychedelic San Francisco outfit is back and with the band is an old friend - founding member Matt Hollywood, whose departure was famously captured in the documentary Dig! . Who Killed Sgt. Pepper , out February 23 via a recordings LTD, is Hollywood's first appearance on a BJM release since 1999's Bringing It All Back Home - Again . [...]

I don't know about you but 2009 was the year I fell in live with remixes. Starting TBE opened up my world to so many amazing reinterpretations of both great and not so great songs. Having always been more of a cover song guy this was new territory for me but I dove in headfirst and have been enjoying the ride so far. Good music is a personal thing and messing with great music is even more so. This is very much a subjective list and is based on nothing besides how much I love and respect the work done. [...]
