Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2009 THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66th North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $25, 8PM Looking at the listing for this show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg 's website, I'm not sure exactly what time TMBG will take to the stage...or even what order the order of the bands will be. It is pretty clear that the other acts on the bill include Charles Bissell (of The Wrens) and Nada Surf. It's also pretty clear that the show is a benefit for The Northside Town [...]

However, it appears that the wild and craziest day is still in front of us. I grabbed what I think is a good list of most day and night shows below--I will scour for my daily "day party" post just to make sure. Not only are there a shit load of [...]

by Bill Pearis Cymbals Eat Guitars @ Bowery Ballroom in May ( more by Ryan Muir ) Okay, so Saturday is officially bonkers. I think every band in town this week is playing somewhere, sometimes more than once. There are so many good shows you may get an ulcer trying to narrow down your choices. Here we go: DAYTIME Surely there's no place you'd rather be Saturday afternoon than at [...]

Recommended Show: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2009 SADDLE CREEK SHOWCASE @ KNITTING FACTORY 361 Metropolitan Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11211 $12, 7PM Another night of great shows happens tonight all over the City. The choice isn't quite as obvious as last night, but Saddle Creek's showcase at the Knitting Factory is sure to be a crowd pleasure (if you want to venture off the beaten Manhattan path into Brooklyn). Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Orenda Fink, Old Canes, UUVVWWZ, Beep Beep and guest Suzannah Johannes are all on the bill there tonight. Check out a list of other shows [...]

Well look at that, It's already that time of year again: C - M - J ! Version 2009 to be precise. And you know the last thing we want is to send you off into the trenches unprepared and indecisive, which is why we're back again with yet another comprehensive plan of action/preview/treasure trove of MP3s to help nudge you through the week ahead. Just as with prior CMJ and SXSW previews, we listed only one show for each recommended band. Most of the bands listed here are playing several – if [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

There was a huge amount of release information from Palasades/Tartan released recently. Just in time for Halloween, Palisades Tartan is pleased to present THE BUTCHER , a distinctive and bloody treat. Told entirely from POV camera shots, this film is set to shock and scare audiences October 27th in video stores across the country. A small group of people lie battered and bound on the floor of a dirty slaughterhouse covered in blood. Scared and confused, they soon learn their captors are snuff film producers and plan to torture them as [...]
Wild Yaks are playing an acoustic set at KGB Bar. It appears to be free but that's not 100%. KGB Bar is an interesting place so this should be quite fun.Spanish Prisoners have been added to the Decibully show at Bruar Falls. $8.Knight School is playing at Silent Barn tonight. No idea what this cost but I'm going to take a guess, $6?

Ribbons at South St. Seaport (07/10/09) Photos : Jon Klemm Since opening for the Pains of Being Pure at Heart at the Seaport earlier this summer, Brooklyn duo Ribbons have been keeping busy with a couple small "studio" projects. They recorded a 73 on their own label (which is available at Other Music and at shows) and they taped a high profile Daytrotter session (which should be live later this month). Their next proper gig is this Saturday night ( Sep [...]

With performances from Psychic Ills, Screaming Females, Zs, Silver Summit, Sharon Van Etten, Future Islands, Air Waves, and Boogie Boarder, this is sure to be a good show. Recently added to the Vivian Girls show at the Summit this Friday is Cleveland's HotChaCha , who'll serve as the local-ish opener. The all-girl group's full-length debut, The World's Hardest Working Telescope & The Violent Birth of Stars , won't be out till October on Exit Stencil (Spanish Prisoners, Dreadful Yawns), but we've got the leadoff track for you below as a sneak preview. mp3: HotChaCha - One Thousand Pillows Soft Huge guitars drenched in delay, vocals with attitude-at times it's hard to tell if these [...]
