Welcome to the new, not-really-improved BabyStew This Week In Chicago listing. What's new about it, you ask? Absolutely nothing, except that it now covers the week from Monday through Sunday rather than Sunday through Saturday. It always seemed weird to me not to be listing Sunday shows until the morning of – when not many people are reading blogs – for the sole purpose of sticking with the conventional definition of "week" ( i.e. , Sun-Sat). But convention be damned. So here's what's going on in Chicago this "week". [...]

Monsieur Cyclopède strikes back. Aujourd'hui, il découvre comment l'absence d'un musicien (sûrement atteint de la grippe porcine) a fait progresser le ska vers le rocksteady, chaînon manquant vers le reggae. :: Justin Hinds & The Dominoes : My Mama Told Me :: [ MP3 ] [ [...]

Despite being on an ongoing tour to support his beautiful new album Songbread/Another Ocean , Bird By Snow (aka Fletcher M. Tucker) still managed to find time to answer some questions for I Am The Crime. So step into the interrogation room to see what he had to say about inspirations, nature, Sweden and - of course - music. What originally inspired you to make music? I didn't start playing music until I was 17 or 18… which is pretty late I think. But I came [...]
Today is the 3rd year of J Dilla 's passing. I'm never good with dates and anniversaries, so thank God for the responsible people who remember these kind of things. I read Spencer Owen's post on MOG today, which is infinitely better than what I can ever write, so I won't even try. Suffice to say I'm still enjoying his music even better than before and feel sorry to have lost him so f'n early. R.I.P But in my pantheon, Donuts is and will always be it. It is now in my top [...]

NAME : Nick Thorburn (Islands, Human Highway) PROGRESS REPORT : Recording Islands' third LP at Stratosphere Studio in New York City; recording a solo LP, I Am An Attic at home; releasing a comic book, This Is Howie Doo , through Bodega Distribution. Nick Thorburn fits the same overachieving Canadian trope that we've bestowed on Spencer Krug and Owen Pallet. But Thorburn's a more self-conscious musician, one who satisfies his self-diagnosed ADD by feeding new ideas, playing with perceptions and expectations , caring a lot about what people think [...]

30. The Raconteurs Consolers of the Lonely [Third Man/Warner Bros.] ?? ?? ?? In which Jack White???s high-profile side project (featuring Detroit buddies Brendan Benson and the Greenhornes??? rhythm section) becomes a real band. Consolers of the Lonely is less pop-oriented than the outfit???s 2006 debut Broken Boy Soldiers , but the writing is stronger and the playing is tighter. The title track alternately recalls Rage Against the Machine and Led Zeppelin II , while other tracks evoke early Who (???Salute Your Solution???) [...]
