... because even though their recorded output is good, it pales in comparison to their live show. On record they're restrained, and tend to let their alt-country influences take over. Live they're a raw, bluesy garage rock tornado, whooping and hollerin' and rolling on the ground. If you like The Loners or The Trousers (and I love both), you will totally dig Spider Bags . Here's video from last night's Double Barrel benefit at the Pour House. And check out my other photos from the show here . [...]

No doubt by now you've heard about the Double Barrel Benefit for WKNC at the Pour House this weekend. Both nights will be great, but I'm most excited about seeing Roman Candle again, and checking out Spider Bags for the first time. If you want to know more about the bands, check out WKNC 's blog. Also at the Pour House on Thursday is a Haiti relief benefit with a stellar line-up: Chatham County Line, A Rooster For The Masses, Filthybird, The Hotwires, Roger Gupton, The Debonzo Brothers and Andy Bilinski. Do not miss Filthybird. Seriously! [...]
S pider Bags - "Hey Delinquents" MP3 Titus Andronicus - "Waking Up Drunk" MP3 (Spider Bags cover) I wasn't even going to review this "7-inch" (I put 7-inch in quotes because all I have is a 2-song CD-r) ... I planned on giving it a cursory listen, dismissing it, and moving on to something else. Well, that didn't happen because Spider Bags ' "Teenage Eyes," not to mention the b-side, "Eileen," are [...]

Photo by Daniel Coston And it's a good one. I was musing about Roman Candle to someone last weekend. Will be good to see them again. From the press release: WKNC 88.1 FM will hold its annual Double Barrel Benefit Friday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 6 at The Pour House Music Hall. The station's seventh installment of the two-night concert will be feature Max Indian and Roman Candle. The Light Pines open Friday's show, followed by Veelee, Bellafea and Max [...]
"They got the guns, but we got the numbers." -- James Morrison, touting a strategic advantage "Come on. Help me! HELP! HELP!" -- Thomas Scharpling, yelling for the arrival of his army "It's a recession. I'm not gonna name names, but, uh, let's just say there's a new President . Right? No? Played that wrong? Blaming Obama for this? That's not going over so well. No, I'm kidding. That was a joke. Please, [...]

I apologize for the lack of activity around here during the past month. It appears holiday season is going to keep me rather busy with various other things that don't pertain to the blog. I still hope to accomplish regular updates though once I get a bit more caught up. Anyway, being a few days late of course is the mix for this past month. Plenty of new tunes to take a listen to with a few old nuggets scattered about like usual. As usual, the artist/band names link to a place of purchase where [...]

Goodbye Cruel World, Hello Crueler World makes one thing clear: We need more bands like Spider Bags. Goodbye Cruel World, Hello Crueler World makes one thing clear: We need more bands like Spider Bags. There is absolutely nothing careful about this album, which is what makes its ramshackle, rocking feel get you so worked up. There's the psychedelic, stretched-out guitars jams like "Trouble", the frayed country balladry of "Swimmer on a String", and even the funky, sawdust blues of "Long White Desert Rose". Spider Bags tackle each sound with a ragged confidence...

Gritty Austin boys Harlem are finally leaving the nest and touring the country. They turned some heads with last year's LP, Free Drugs ; ) , and the album's singles, "Witch Greens" and "South of France." They've been recording new material, but nothing new has surfaced yet. As I understand, they've torn up Austin pretty well, so I imagine the big tour will be equally incredible. While they're not coming to D.C., they are playing in Baltimore, Philly and New York, so catch them while you can. 9.4 La Cave - Costa Mesa, California 9.24 Rubber Gloves - [...]
Last month, local trio Harlem were holed up in a studio in Costa Mesa, CA working hard on their sophomore album (their first for Matador ). Still putting the finishing touches on the album, the band will hit the road this Fall and will surely be trying out the new songs live. Image From Here Trying to keep up with what is new. Will try to do this every week. Below are five albums I picked out of the new releases for August 25th, 2009. Arctic Monkey's Humbug was also released on the 25th. But, I decided not to post about it since about a million other bloggers have beat me to the punch. It's actually a decent album and I have nothing against the band. So, every week, on Wednesday or Thursday I will highlight some of the new releases for that week. This [...]

Imogen Heap's new album, Ellipse is out this week and is also available in a 2-CD edition that includes a bonus CD filled with instrumental tracks from the album. Rounder Records' 4-CD Woody Guthrie box set My Dusty Road may be the week's most interesting release, packaged in an old-fashioned suitcase. The discs aim to be a definitive collection of Guthrie's mid-1940s recordings and were pulled from newly discovered masters. Other albums I have heard and can strongly recommend this [...]

Gucci Mane - "Weird" Well "Weird" certainly lives up to its name. The beat sounds like someone (I'm assuming Zaytoven) took a sledgehammer to an existing Zaytoven beat and then tried to piece it back together. It's a really odd and interesting production, but if it is Zay it's not thaaaat far off from, say, "First Day Out" or any one of his other beats that are really layered and have all these counterpointing keyboard riffs bouncing off each other. Gucci's verses are structured pretty appropriately to this beat, which is to say not [...]
View Larger Map I went to SxSW for the first time last year. I didn't know what or where to eat. While talking to David Bazan and getting his suggestion for nachos, this idea came about. I asked a number of bands for their recommendations on where to eat in Austin and during SxSW and here are their recommendations. Be sure to 'View Larger Map' above if you're more visually minded. What's your favorite place to eat in Austin? What are the indie rockers forgetting? [...]

You should give money to Jersey City, New Jersey radio station WFMU during this year's pledge drive, which runs through March 15. Why? Because it's a bastion of independence in an increasingly corporate world. Not convinced? Well, maybe a track-by-track covers album devoted to Paul and Linda McCartney's 1971 LP Ram featuring a bunch of indie rock heavies will sway you. If you pledge $75 or more during the station's music'n'comedy extravaganza "The Best Show" [...]
