Nothing I love more than a video round-up. Especially when Josh Martinez is involved. Dude puts out more videos than Madonna in her heyday, but there's a pretty high level of quality control on them, too. Especially on this one, directed by the fabled Stuey Kubrick (purported to be the "pervert nephew" of one Stanley Kubrick. This single, though, is one of Mr. Martinez's finest to date. How this man has dodged international stardom is a total mystery to me (in fact, he is so huge a star in his native Canada that he [...]

International friendlies and qualifiers coming up. This is when I usually aim to get some material, that may or may not be related, out there. Starting with... Introductions are not needed with El Tel, but some background on why he likes to sing. This from a Guardian article/interview done in 2002: "He's not new to crooning. As a nightclub owner he used to treat the punters to a regular SingalongaTel, and as a teenager he sang with band leader [...]

Phyllis Linda Hyman (July 6, 1949 — June 30, 1995) calls forth two issues to deal with in this week's classic post. One is Ms. Hyman's life and death as a female vocalist and the other is her work as a jazz singer. Neither topic is straightforward nor simple to delineate. Like life, the Phyllis Hyman story is full of twists, turns, contradictions and amazing highlights diminished by depressing lows. I certainly wish her life had been different but it is what it is, and, although marked by triumphs and successes, the life of Phyllis Hyman is more a cautionary [...]

Sylvester's Over and Over is by far one of my favorite classic dance tunes. Released in 1977 on Fantasy Records , the Ashford and Simpson penned anthem was a staple for D J Larry Levan and his faithful Paradise Garage acolytes. It too has found a permanent place in my nightly "party records" rotation. Of course with a singer of Sylvester's caliber, it is easy for the vocal performance to outshine the musical arrangement, but to me, the latter wins in [...]
Remember the halcyon days of June 4, 2009? We are all a little younger, the Red Wings were up 2-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals and we talked about Ghostface quitting doing songs about coke because he said he was too old? Well, the folks at Bossip have compiled a lengthy list of rappers who are over 30, and it's below for your perusal. Ice Cube (June 15, 1969) – 39 Jay-Z (December 4, 1969) – 39 Raekwon (January 12, 1970) – 39 [...]

Asperse is the pseudonym of Stanley Minnick III and "Grief, Five Phases" is a concept album he has put together dealing with the disintegration of love and family. The five phases Minnick alludes to are the stages one goes through according to the Kubler-Ross theory of loss. They include Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and finally Acceptance--all of which are represented in order on "Grief, Five Phases." While I traditionally frown upon concept albums because they get too wrapped up in the theme and sacrifice songwriting for theme's sake, Asperse has put together an emotive short player that allows the listener [...]

Mick Jones of The Clash once sang, "I wasn't born so much as I fell out", which is a notion I can get with, since my family isn't very emotionally demonstrative. That's not as bad as it sounds, since we all love each other, so I was surprised when out of the blue, my mom started letting me know that she cared for me. I was pretty perplexed and answered with eyes arched as she was waited for a response that wasn't soon forthcoming. After a few more tries, there was an explanation that she'd read in my blog how [...]

Here is a mix I put together for the 18th Street Lounge in D.C. The groovy track selection escorts you though a variety of genres - funk, jazz, afro-beat, boogaloo, old school dancehall and spacey abstract soundscapes are what you can expect to hear. Think antique couches and pricey rum & cokes, then hit play. Enjoy! Jim Cushinery, Marty Ross, and Bobby Tews have finally arrived. The story of The Wigs is a bit of an west coast legend. Formed in Milwaukee and after building a local fanbase in 1982, they piqued the interest of CBS Records and recorded a shining gem of an album, but ended up with infamous manager Stanley Polley (Badfinger fans take note). As the paperwork was being drawn up to commence recording of The Wigs' major label debut, CBS became embroiled in a hostile takeover attempt and the album was allowed to die on the vine with a limited release. Now, [...]

You might or might not know about this fella, but hear this; this is the single best late warmup song ever made (at least in late 2008). On his spare time he hangs out with small fish like Daniel Portman, Dinka, Chris Reece, Jerome Isma-Ae and EDX. How's that for a friday night? Stanley Ross - Yours (Original Mix) I've had my eyes on Tyrrell since I heard his remix of Fool's Paradise by P. Liassi & One on a Wisternoff mix [...]
