Friday, November 20, 2009 We are creeping, quite quickly actually in to the looming holiday season and the studios are sort of coughing up the small game in lieu of the enormous money makers to come. Of course, this is the weekend of Twilight, so perhaps I'm just talking out of my ass, but this feels like the calm before the storm. An animated flick from the creators of Shrek, a slightly chintzy looking sports flick, and of course Bela and Edward - consider me non-plussed. It's the limited films I'm interested in this [...]
Jamie Stewart and friends will be releasing Dear God, I Hate Myself, February 23rd on Kill Rock Stars. Stewart is joined by Angela Seo on piano, synth, and drum programming; with production handled by himself and Deerhoof's Greg Saunier. A couple of the tracks were recorded primarily on a Nintendo DS, which will either sound [...]

[It's Bjork's birthday on Saturday, celebrate appropriately. Here's my late-arriving weekend rundown:] Tonight: Alan Palomo's Neon Indian [pictured; download below] brings its multimedia synthscapes to the Echoplex for a night of cool electro that includes Keenhouse , Tigercity and Little Red Radio . ... Julian Casablancas hits downtown's Palace Theatre for Week 3 of his residency. ... Party guys Iglu & Hartly try to build on their U.K. buzz with a show in their home city at [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Blake Butler is the rare young writer who consistently and effectively challenges his readers. Scorch Atlas is a haunting collection of interconnected stories and vignettes, a dystopian work of genius. The book itself is a work of art. The internal pages are individually distressed, and the page edges and cover appear burnt and scarred, and the design complements the book's theme perfectly. Matt [...]
When two legendary frontmen get together for a discussion, the result is often a must-watch clip for rock disciples. In this case, Jon Spencer (he of Blues Explosion , Boss Hog , Heavy Trash , and Pussy Galore), and Ian Svenonius (of Nation of Ulysses, the Make Up, and Chain & the Gang) got together at Kutsher's Country Club in upstate New York at this year's All Tomorrows Parties festival. Svenonius' unique demeanor and interview style are matched against Spencer's encyclopedic knowledge of classic blues and rock 'n' roll. Among the topics they discuss: Ike [...]
As I mentioned earlier this year, it seems that as a result of the recent times, Brooklyn, New York has become the center of the world for indie rock aficionados. Sure, maybe the Dodgers will never move back east, but Brooklyn has definitely developed into something much larger than their former baseball team could ever compare to. Singer/songwriter Tim Williams certainly feels right at home and well within the walls and camaraderie of Brooklyn. While literally clicking alive on the heels of his third full-length album , Careful Love , Williams channels his personal darkest hours of reconstructive [...]
Friday! Quick-hit thoughts of the week! QUICK-HIT THOUGHTS OF THE WEEK! 1. Whatever Brains - Gross Urge (mp3) ( buy ) BAM! Whatever Brains ( myspace ) is a Raleigh, North Carolina band called WHATEVER BRAINS. That automatically qualifies them to be AWESOME, but this song - along with a lot of the rest of their Trim-Jeans and/or Gross Urge Plus Ten CD-R - qualifies them to be DOUBLE AWESOME. I'm more comfortable thinking of them as traditional lo-fi punk than as [...]
William DeVaughn is quite possibly the coolest cat to remind us to be thankful for what we've got-way better than hearing mom chastise us for being a spoiled brat who refuses to eat meatloaf for dinner. Lo and behold, a suspect dinner was the least of it. There really are starving kids in Africa, and right here at home too (wherever home may be). And while we should be grateful for all we have, the best thing to do is spread the wealth-even if it's not financial. If you're looking to give back during the holidays, [...]

Like most American kids, I went to camp during the summer. From age 7 to 10 I did all the usual camp things; rode horses, shot arrows, rock climbed and made lumpy ashtrays for the non-smoking parentals in ceramics. Another campfire tradition, in between state-mandated Kum Ba Yas , were ghost stories. Yet another year where our counselor attempted to give us the Gold Arrow camp canard about the B-17 pilot who plunged into the lake, and now whose ghost still haunted the area. By 9 years of age our cabin wasn't buying it, we [...]
NPR's Monitor Mix Blog has posted a roundtable discussion conducted by Carrie Brownstein, formerly of Sleater-Kinney , in which representatives from Merge Records , Matador Records , Kill Rock Stars , Saddle Creek Records and Jagjaguwar discuss the role of a record label in a perpetually changing marketplace. Topics touched on include the culture surrounding the digital age, the resurgence of vinyl, file-sharing and more. Check it out here .

My buddy Vin and I arrived at the show just in time to see Whiskey Daredevils, a local band with a lot of buzz. They started off their set by saying "Thanks for coming out on Wednesday night, we know you could be at home watching Modern Family." That's true, it's a good show, which stars Ohio native Ed O'Neill, but thankfully there's always Hulu. Whiskey Daredevils often play around the area, but for some reason I have not seen them before. We both have heard a lot of positive hype about them, so we pretty excited that we were [...]
Team Clermont was in attendance for last weeks Athens Jookabox show, and what an amazing evening it was! One of our favorite tracks from the Asthmatic Kitty stars is "Don't Go Phantom"! They recently released a video for this track, the fifth video from their latest release Dead Zone Boys . This animated adventure features colored ghosts, random thievery, and mad scientistry! Check it our below!
