Perhaps not ghosts, more inferior Microsoft services. I abhorred their enforced service updates beforehand, but now the installations appear to have crippled my main laptop with no clever suggestions as to how to solve the shite they've engineered. And this relates to this beeeeecccaaause....? I had intended to post day 3 of CMJ and keep the roll going, but all the pictorial/audio content is on that machine. Balls. Luckily, I have the good folks at Insound [...]

Fresh mash-ups have been appearing all over the internet from a duo named The White Panda . Mashing music from their homes in Los Angeles and Chicago, Procrast and DJ Griffi goal is to produce "party music for the masses." The White Panda concentrates mostly on mixing two-three songs together, making the songs considerably less overwhelming than mash-ups from Girl Talk or Super Mash Bros. The first song of theirs that caught my attention was one blending Passion Pit with current inmate T.I. The song seems to give equal play to both songs and [...]

Hope you enjoyed our last post all about those great Shoes remixes ? For today we are enjoying a return to the indie shores of Recommender-land. A familiar and rather brilliant place, with three gorgeous pointers for you to enjoy. FREELANCE WHALES New York is pumping out so much great music at the moment, but to be fair to this beloved city we aren't sure it's conveyor belt ever stopped?! The next band that plonked onto our playlists come from the [...]

Few bands have evolved as beautifully as The Raveonettes. They have always had an admittedly apparent 50s pop influence, but the band started as something more rough and tumble. The first track on their first release, "Attack Of The Ghost Riders" from 2002's Whip It On , is intensely dark and harder-edged. From there, they patiently explored old pop styles and feedback-laden music until 2007's Lust Lust Lust , on which they took a turn for a slower, deeper psychedelic sound. Now, on their fourth full length album, The Raveonettes have taken a look back at [...]

Built to Spill 's latest album There is No Enemy is being released today, and includes their typical guitar-heavy melodies and Doug Martsch meanderings and while I can't say they approach their golden era of Perfect From Now On and Keep it Like a Secret , they have put out a solid new album that I'm definitely glad to hear. Standout tracks for me include the opener "Aisle 13", the superbly sublime "Nowhere Lullaby" and the lengthy lullaby "Things Fall Apart." Like Yo La Tengo or Sonic Youth, it's good to hear that they're still [...]
In the convertible Ghia. Top down. Tunes blasting. Love the Ripple life . . . Kyle Andrews - Real Blasty First CD popped into the player with a touch of trepidation, not being a fan of much of the "oh so coy" indie-pop crafted by young men locked in their rooms with a keyboard and a copy of ProTools. Think something like Bright Eyes and I'll drift off quicker than a fresh drip of Michael Jackson's propofol. Imagine [...]

Nowadays an album's release date is almost as irrelevant as its chart position, but nevertheless every Sunday night we get super excited for the next week's releases. Normally when we get so excited we like to shave the fur off our cats to take our mind off it all, but now we've decided to keep ourselves busy by sharing our excitement and tell you about some of next week's major releases with some exclusive album MP3s... MAJORELEASES: SEPT 21th One eskimO by One EskimO [...]
Declaring themselves "Original Doo Wop Punk" Little Red has made it big in Australia and is now setting their sights on the rest of the world. Internationally debuting their single "Coca Cola," they're a fun and energetic group who truly capture the 50's 60's old fashioned Rock and Roll (think Beach Boys) complete with backing vocals that captures the innocence of that era. They're a cute band with even cuter lyrics, but you won't find anything profound here. "My one and only advice/ Is cold coca cola and Ice" are sugary lyrics that give you an equally sugary [...]
My Top 10 Guilty Pleasure movies By Scott Murphy Guilty pleasures are hard to define, they are usually films that are used embarrassed to admit to watching but I never felt embarrassed to watch rubbish films. So I have defined films that I feel I have to justify liking and watching with tongue firmly in cheek. 10. Judge Dredd I have always been a big Judge Dredd fan, ever since I was [...]

Shit on a stick likes his Volcano vaporizer Like most of you (I presume), I smoke a lot of weed. And like most of you (I presume again), I don't have a lot of cash flow. As a result, I've come to the conclusion that I have to either stop burning so much or figure out a magical way to get super high on less trees. My throat is also on the outs. Now of course I can get a bong. Hell - I can even make one. But my 30th birthday [...]

Again, super behind on the music that's been coming in. Apologies. Fortunately for this blog Markus G (formerly Sirhan) has been kicking it into overdrive and delivering some quality, quality tunage. As for everyone else (Black Holes, Kid Color, miracleGro, and both Brookah's), they've all been removed for lack of contribution. Sad face. Anyway, as always, I feel like all of these artists would ultimately get their own post, but I'm too far behind. Lastly, had to post up this picture of The Balconies... Jacquie is too cute, not to mention the ultra authenticity of the bros beside her. [...]

Whenever the moon is just right, the Vague Panther picks his favorite MP3s from the web to bring you the "In the Know" series. If you've got a tip that might pique his interest email him at vaguepanther(at)strangerdance. com. Taken by Trees - "Watch the Waves" "Watch the Waves" is a single off of Taken by Trees' upcoming East of Eden LP, due out September 8, 2009. [...]
Expectations would be sky high if you look at how high Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion has been rated and Deerhunter/ Atlas Sound (Bradford Cox's solo project) coming off an amazing year. Even then, Noah Lennox aka Panda Bear 's Person Pitch is superb and I dig the record more then AnCo's. In a way it's a super indie collaboration. With Lennox on vocals, in a way it comes off as an awesome Panda Bear track with some seemingly looped sections. What I like about Panda Bear is that while unique and trippy, it's almost [...]

Here once again, is Volcano Suns bassist and newfound MS guest blogger, Jeff Weigand . Jeff and the MS board were last seen trading barbs about The Gloved One croaking, in which the question was posited, "Well then, what exactly is it that Mr. Weigand's into, exactly?" A specific answer at least, below...(JK) First off, let me say that I am unabashedly a Cheap Trick fan and have been since I was eleven years old...so I am pretty much a partisan. The refreshing thing about these guys is not [...]

Just what was July 2008 like? It was a little like this... Downloadables: Nowheres Nigh (mp3) by Parts & Labor Let It All Go (mp3) by Jay Reatard Africa Just Wants To Have Fun (mp3) by Volcano Antoine And Birdskull (mp3) by Jaguar Love The Kicking Machine (mp3) by Melvins Keep It Wolf (hello sir [...]

Gently Crushing (On) You Akin to what would be found on a Wes Anderson film soundtrack, cute all-American crush-pop band Miniature Tigers is like a symphony of dreams. Their plush orchestral pop on 'Tchaikovsky and Solitude' has a heated desire wrapped up in its popping click track rhythms and grand, majestic harpsichord. The infinitely cool Americana of country/pop odes 'The Wolf' and 'Cannibal Queen' are incredibly endearing in their sun-soaked harmonies, warm pop melodies and clappy rhythms. 'The Wolf' is my pick for favourite. Charlie Brand and Rich Schaier from [...]
• More details are emerging about the future of Futurama . David X. Cohen, the show's longtime executive producer, had much to say about plot details and potential story lines in a recent interview. "In upcoming episodes we want to talk about the characters' lives and the everyday tech of the future. We're already working on one involving a shocking sexual relationship." He also says something about making fun of iPhones and Twitter, because nobody on earth has made fun of the uselessness of Twitter yet. Blah blah blah. The only thing I came away from in the entire [...]
