Hot on the heels of last year's awesome Find Me A Drink Home , the Lansing, Michigan trio Cheap Girls is back with another great full-length full of straightforward punkish power-pop, My Roaring 20's . There really aren't any huge changes to be found when comparing My Roaring 20's to their debut, but (again) it seems as if Cheap Girls know exactly what it is they do well and just stick with it. The production is (however) a bit better but still retains enough of the lo-fi charm that no one will accuse [...]
Surely you haven't forgotten about that upcoming Cheap Trick show at The Ryman on Dec. 3. You really shouldn't need any more incentive than Cheap Trick to make it out to the mother church that nig... Continue reading "Superdrag to Open for Cheap Trick at the Ryman, Dec. 3" >
I am often asked about the criteria for a great poster. The immediate answers are pretty simple: decent concept, nice image (boobs optional) and competent type. A more in-depth answer is that a poster must be able to hang on a wall for years, stared at and dissected AND still be able to hold your attention. It could be the poster is multi-layered with colors allowing the viewer to focus on different imagery. Or the designer could have placed small jokes, flourishes, text, details that takes time to find and enjoy. Either way, the designers of [...]

The CMJ Music Marathon is a daunting, eventful week full of up-and-coming bands swimming with the sharks of the music industry and fans of over doing it everywhere. Each and every year for five days we all line up like fools to get a taste of what the tastemakers at CMJ have deemed the "buzz" acts of the moment along with a few high profile names to draw in a few extra ticket buyers. It's a ridiculous system yet we play along every year, leave exhausted and drained from the non-stop booze and deafened by bands, most [...]

Superdrag | Piano (Planetary Group Day Party) | October 23, 2009 There's a forgotten place in college radio for bands that were once huge. Bands that have moved from majors to indies and still amass a dedicated following. Superdrag are one of those bands from the 90s. With their hit "Sucked Out," they made their claim to fame. Seeing the act perform a day party for they Planetary Group at a small venue like Pianos (even at a day party) was sort of weird. They didn't play "Sucked Out," but "Do the [...]

Imaad Wasif | Pianos (Planetary Group Day Party) | October 23, 2009 While Superdrag played downstairs at Pianos, Imaad Wasif was playing above them. Splitting my time, I didn't get to see all of Wasif's performance, but what I saw was great. The former Yeah Yeah Yeahs touring guitarist played by himself with an acoustic guitar. Check out more photos from this solo set after the jump. www.imaadwasif.com | www.teepeerecords.com

The CMJ day parties really kick into gear today. I'm sure I'm forgetting something on this list. I left off a paid early show ($10 at Santos Party House), and CMJ's official Happy Hour at Brooklyn Brewery, which you need a badge to get into; however, I did include Spin's party, which you had to RSVP for even though that list is now closed. CHOUETTE DAY PARTY AT CAKE SHOP (Noon-7PM): Forest Fire (5th), Sian Alice Group (4th), Juliana Barwick (3rd), Theo Angell (2nd), High Life (1st) PLANETARY GROUP/FUTURE [...]

Recommended Show: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $20, 8PM With this being the start of the weekend and CMJ still going on, there should be some good shows tonight. There are some pretty good ones, but nothing so amazing as to be obvious. However, School of Seven Bells performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight should be pretty memorable--and just off the beaten path enough that badge holders MIGHT be able to get in without too much hassle. [...]

DOWNLOAD: Rookie of the Year - "Feels Like New" (MP3) Last month, Rookie of the Year was in town for a show at The Studio at Webster Hall. I had the chance to sit down and talk with lead singer Ryan Dunson and guitarist Mike Kamerman before the show about the evolution of the band, the current tour, and plans for the future. BrooklynRocks : Let's start with the show tonight. How far into the current tour are you? [...]

There are certain songs that I wouldn't necessarily call guilty pleasures, because they are well-written pop songs, but rather - it never stops feeling somehow indulgent to enjoy their toe-tapping majesty this much . The amp-kicking Superdrag hit " Sucked Out " (from 1996's Regretfully Yours) remains a song I still like to hear, and when Brendan Benson covered it last week for his Daytrotter session , I was delighted. Benson and Superdrag share similar songwriting chops in consistently solid pop genius, oft-overlooked. This is a song [...]

Three nights, five venues, eighteen bands, and too many beers to count. That was my Next Big Nashville 2009 in a nutshell. Not quite as crazy as NBN08, but still one hell of a good time. So now that the ringing in my ears has died down, let the recapping begin. Thursday night we kicked things off by meeting Tyge from The Opening Acts at the Basement to catch The Carter Administration [...]
