Gimme Sympathy by Metric would have to be my anthem for this summer. While we were on tour through Western Canada in June, we had satellite radio in our rental car. This meant we could listen to CBC radio 3 all the time! It was fabulous! This was the first time i heard the new Metric song and i fell in love with it. I bought it on iTunes when i got back to Halifax and have played it in my car almost everyday this summer. It's nice when you fall in love with music, and it's even nicer when [...]

We are extremely excited to announce that we will be starting a monthly feature on July 1, Canada Day, titled From the Artists Perspective. In this monthly feature we are working in partnership with many Canadian artists, a producer, and a few promotional companies to bring you this monthly feature which will include two aspects. The first aspect will be asking Canadian artists to give their viewpoint on an assortment of topics surrounding the music industry. The second aspect will be having some artists provide their opinion on a track from fellow Canadian artists. We will be partnering with Sonicbids [...]

We've been making changes around the hill, and one of the ones we have the highest hopes for is the new Show Listings page . We've just launched it recently, so it isn't jam-packed with shows yet, but we're hoping that in time it will be the place to go for Halifax shows. As part of that, we're introducing this new feature you are currently eyeballing: a friday rundown of the weekend shows and a look at what's coming up next week. So here you go, you've got the always enjoyable Superfantastics tonight, the Divorcees [...]
Canadian cuties (and boy/girl duo) The Superfantastics just wrapped up the short homeland tour they'd announced last month in support of their latest, the 7" EP Choose Your Destination . Now, Stephanie and Matthew just sent word that they'd completed a clip for one of Destination 's songs, "Turn On Me". The fuzzy, jangly song gets a simple performance video shot (directed by drummer Stephanie d'Entremont herself) and it's just the way we picture the duo: all hanging out, playing and smiling with a hilarious appearance from a Led Zeppelin-esque double neck guitar. And what's better [...]
(photo by Chris Smith) Super rad bubblegum-fun Canadian indie pop duo The Superfantastics (who, you may be aware, are one of our favorite finds from the last year or so) have been laying low lately, not really coming up for air to make a blip on the old radar here, recording a 7" called "Choose Your Destination" and working hard on a follow-up to 2007's Pop Up Book . But that's about to change as the boy/girl harmonies are about to explode as they tour around their native country in the next [...]

Album : Heirloom Label : independent Release Date : Out Now! Website : wintermitts.com " ...Lise Monique intertwines English and French lyrics with the ease of elementary school girls braiding each other's hair in Canada's schoolyards, while the accompanying music pulls you to your feet or keeps your eyes on the stage. posted by Matt: Awhile back I organized a small East Coast tour featuring my pals Shotgun Jimmie and The Superfantastics. I also invited a guy I only knew through his Myspace, named Dan Griffin. I guess he figured tagging a long didn't seem like such a bad idea, and met us for the dates. It wasn't long into his first performance before it became obvious that Dan comes by naturally what so many singer/songwriters spend hours on pirated versions of Pro Tools trying to pull-off. He's a pro...such a [...]
*Windom Earle performing at 6015 Willow 6015 Willow is an address in Halifax. Over the years the house has provided shelter and acted as a hub for many artists and musicians in the city. As 6015 residents Paul Hammond and Jeffrey Parkers time in the house came to an end they wanted to do something big, so the guys decided to have 20 local bands perform over 3 days and film it. The result of their project is a movie that shows one performance by each band with [...]

The Superfantastics are a Halifax, Nova Scotia indie pop duo who have been around for a few years now. I reviewed their material a few years back when I first heard them. Matthew MacDonald and Stephanie d'Entremont make up the band whose video for their track 'Tonight Tonite' was nominated for video of the year at the ECMAs 2008! Matthew gave us his picks for his favorite music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What was your favorite album released in 2008? [...]

Sweet peanuts, 2008 is running out fast! I've only got a couple of days to get the rest of my lists in order before the year is in the books. In the spirit of pressing on, here are my favourite EPs of the last twelve months. Initially a much larger list, I scaled it back to my top 5 (not really intended to be in a particular order, but turns out its a good indication of my favourites from top to bottom). Looking at it now I realize these are all similarly upbeat, hook-laden doses of indie pop, [...]

In typical herohillian style, I've put off posting on Nova Scotia Music Week until today, which also happens to be the day the festivities begin. But I'm afraid that how we operate around here, it's all seat of the pants, knife-edge action when you climb the hill my friends, so you have to learn to deal with it. Or something like that. Anyway, NS Music Week is chalk full of events, so if you're anywhere within travelling distance of New Glasgow (wait, there's a "New" Glasgow? Word to Mr. Burns, and also, [...]

Well, HPX is upon us, and the question must be asked: are you ready to rocksteady? Or something to that effect. Schedule? Check . Herohill's recommendations? Check . Case of Redbull or those pills that truckers take to avoid falling asleep and plowing into an Irving Bigstop at 3am? Check. Link to obligatory MC Hammer video? Check . All right then, be safe out there and enjoy all of this: A History Of, A Sight for Sewn Eyes, A/V, Above All Else, Al [...]
