I tell you man these Swedes are unstoppable with this music thing, I can't tell you how many times a good song leads me back to the good ol' Landet lagom. In fact, I just found out Sweden is the third largest music exporter in the world, surpassed only by the U.S. & UK, thank you ABBA. Anyways, I heard the new Lykke Li song for the New Moon soundtrack and it put me back in that zone. This was one of the first tracks I posted on EMPT so here's one of our classic throwback for your [...]

We all believe things come and go in cycles and if anyone is complaining about The Mary Onettes sounding too 80s, they shoud really search their souls. Swedes have a knack of tugging at our heart strings in recent years and its no different this time with The Mary Onettes. Being under Labrador Records mean their label mates include The Legends , Sound Of Arrows & The Radio Dept. Wonderful company. In all brutal honesty, they have not exactly changed much after their [...]

I've learned never to judge an Idol contestant on their first album. Each time, it's primarily a producer's effort, filled with songs plucked from the vaults to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. If they're lucky, the artist will get to nudge parts of the album in an interesting direction or two. I adored Adam Lambert on the Idol stage, but what about as a recording artist? 1. Music Again - Kicking the album off in the best way possible, this Justin Hawkins-penned track is a template Lambert would be [...]
Photo courtesy of Little Dragon's Myspace Page . Is there something in the water in Gothenburg, Sweden? The Knife, The Tough Alliance, Jose Gonzalez, Jens Lekman, and now Little Dragon – those damn Swedes just keep pumping out irresistible pop melodies in a variety of weird incarnations. Little Dragon's track "Runabout" is certainly a slice of quirky pop, but it is uniquely, wonderfully sun-soaked; the soundtrack to a leisurely bike ride on the nicest day of summer, when you're headed to your best friend's house or the beach or a BBQ. [...]

The Swedes took over the HOB on Saturday as Swedish indie supergroup Peter, Bjorn & John and El Perro Del Mar took to the stage. I had seen both acts before and both did pretty well in front of what was a pretty sparse HOB crowd, but the show was also not quite mind-blowing either. This was a self-proclaimed 10th anniversary tour from PB&J, but I'm not sure that really added anything to the mix. They hit some high points and had the regular PB&J energy to bring a solid show to the HOB. [...]

OK this might get a little confusing so stick with me. Somedays the sometime art gallery and Sydney's most affordable purveyor of fashionable Scandinavian wares (actually, Sydney's second most affordable purveyor of fashionable Scandinavian wares) has opened up shop in Melbourne - in a space once inhabited by another ( now defunct ) sometime art gallery and retail space - Schwipe/Don't Come . To avoid confusion with the similarly named PAM store Someday , the crafty Swedes from Somedays have dubbed the retail space Somewhere so if you've [...]
The Swedes are taking over. Now members from both The Embassy and Studio have joined together to create a supergroup-of-sorts in The Crepes . The sound is not too far off from The Embassy; with a bit of acoutic-tropicalia. Its my guess they didn't take this project TOO seriously but enough to put out a quaint seven-song record titled What Else? You can purchase this in CD form (vinyl LP sold out) at the INFORMATION website . The Crepes - No The Crepes - Sugar

This song was my introduction to Swedish indie pop band Sambassadeur and boy do they make a grand first impression. From the triumphant opening build of "Days" that bursts out of the gate with a host of strings, keys, and percussion there's no doubt that you're in for a truly anthemic, sweeping pop song.As with other musically-inclined Swedes like Shout-Out Louds and Jens Lekman, the boys and girl of Sambassadeur have a gift for matching bittersweet melodies with magnificent orchestral flourishes, while their twee sensibilities and use of a dynamic female vocalist actually gives them a strong kinship with Scottish indie poppers, Camera Obscura. Anna Persson's [...]

After spending several hours and TTC rides with my iPod revisiting literally hundreds of albums spawned from the decade that began at the turn of the century, I managed to whittle down a pretty extensive list to a mere 50 choices. These are not the best albums of the decade, these are simply the ones that have spent the most time in my headphones. And I rambled enough about that here , so let's just get on with the list: 50. Gold - Ryan Adams (2001) [...]

○○○○○ IF YOU decide to call your band The Amazing , you'd better be good. And then if you decided to also call your debut album The Amazing as well, well you'd better be better than good. Luckily, the Swedes are not bad at all. The eponymous LP, the band's first studio outing, is a psyche-folk-rock collection that's as much Pink Floyd as Grizzly Bear , full of woozy acoustic grooves and ethereal hummed vocals. Never undercooked, but never even close to the pomposity their name implies, The Amazing probably about sums [...]

Penguin Prison have been getting a lot of hype recently. Their song "Animal Animal" has been everywhere and that's OK with me. It has a ridiculously catchy chorus and name drops Mike Tyson... that's all it takes to win me over. However, what really got me excited to make this post was the recently released The Sound of Arrows remix of the song. These Swedes can do no wrong. I've loved every single one of their original songs and remixes and this is just another great addition to their small but ridiculously well curated [...]
Written by: Dallas MeckThe Swedes have done it again. El Perro Del Mar, along side fellow Swedish indie group Peter, Bjorn and John, filled Webster hall with the twee pop sound Sweden is been more recently known for. Touring after the release of their 3rd album "Love Is Not Pop" El Perro Del Mar hits the U.S. audiences again. The softly lit stage, which the band only encompasses a portion of, is

Formed in 2005 as Sleazy Romance , the five-piece from Uppsala renamed themselves Light In Your Life before releasing their eponymous debut album last summer. Despite their new moniker though, these Swedes are far from a bunch of blokes making upbeat music to dance your shocks off. Instead they play broody, melancholic post-punk influenced indie rock that can be just as depressing as it is beautiful and dreamlike. Their pop sensibility and dark undertones puts them in the same niche as bands like Editors , Interpol , Film School , Kent [...]
(In which I face the reality that I rarely wake up before noon on Mondays, so titling a series "Monday Morning Video Fun" was just stupid.) Cortney Tidwell - whose musical virtue we've espoused here on multiple occasions - has a new video out. It's the third video releaed from her latest album, Boys , which you still can't get in the states because American record labels seem to have lost their ear for good music. What a bunch of jagoffs. Anyway, this came to my attention via the fine folks [...]

If you have not heard 'Young Folks' by Peter Bjorn and John , you must be living under a rock. And even if you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm sure you've heard it even if you didn't know whom it was by because 'Young Folks' was a top 20 hit on the UK singles chart 3 years ago. It begins with a snappy whistling intro that could be irritating I suppose if you're not into that sort of thing. Me? I love it - the song rates on my [...]

Curtain Call by Midaircondo 2009, Twin Seed, 11 tracks at 43 min. Listen Buy CD RATING: 4.9 out of 5 Roughly four years have passed since Midaircondo's phenomenal debut, Shopping for Images . The path's been cluttered—one less bandmate, a label switch, and a sudden (or rather gradual) change in musical disposition for the Swedish gals. The brooding darkness of their debut is not entirely lost; it just happens to be a [...]

Shopping for Images by Midaircondo 2005, Type Records, 11 tracks at 53 min. Listen Buy CD RATING: 4.9 out of 5 Swedes are good at a lot of things—meatballs, berries, tennis, dynamite, Walpurgis Night, and classifying things into other things. They are also amazingly talented in producing music. The Knife, Opeth, ABBA, Robyn, the Tough Alliance, Meshuggah, Refused—all of them, delicious Swedes. Particularly apt in black metal with lyrics concerning permafrost, the Swedes [...]
