After reading that much discussed New York Magazine cover story on the Brooklyn scene from a few months ago, we'll admit one of the more enjoyable daydreams we took away from it was imagining all these bands running around the borough together as musical superfriends. They could fight crime together and meet in underground hideaways around large tables flanked by swivel chairs. Unfortunately, we're pretty sure this doesn't really happen. But it's sort of comforting to know our similarly outlandish theory for Oklahoma and walking around each new corner hoping to find a Flaming Lips member doing bizarre [...]
I began my interview with Yonatan Gat, Haggai Fershtman and Ami Shalev of Monotonix sitting on the floor in front of them, as there were only three chairs in the interview room. Haggai was having none of this and went into an adjoining office to get a swivel chair.

Most tours in my memory are filled with sun. This one was filled with rain. Rain, indefatigable rain. Thread-soaking rain. Rain every day. Rain into May. Rain across the Southeast. Rain in the Northeast. Rain in the Midwest. Rain across the nation. Rain in Philadelphia, PA. Even in the Motor City. Ooh yeah. There was no outrunning the rain. When we were driving east we consoled ourselves by saying, "Well, we're traveling in the same direction the weather travels, so we're just unfortunately keeping up with the rain." Then we headed south and still it rained and we said, "Well, [...]
Tonight in Baltimore the Talking Head is the place to be because the great Thrushes are playing their hometown with Let's Wrestle and Baby Aspirin opening. Down in DC you can catch the hype with N.A.S.A., Lil' El, Jackie O, Nacey, and Steve Starks at the Rock and Roll Hotel or you can catch the rock at the Black Cat with Travis Morrison Hellfighters and Poor But Sexy. Also in DC are Telltale and Contramano at the Velvet Lounge . Up north in Philadelphia don't miss out on a good one at the [...]

Yeah, it is about that time for bands to migrate southward towards Austin and the music festival know as SXSW. Philly and Baltimore are very sparse, DC has a bit more. Guess we will see a surge in the coming weeks as bands come home or continue their tours. Still, some great shows to see this weekend. Here is what's happening: Bell X1 (via bands myspace) With their new album Blue Lights on the Runway just released [...]
Talking Head David Byrne stopped by "The Colbert Report" studio to have a predictably antagonistic interview with Stephen Colbert, and also to play "Life is Long" from last year's collaboration with Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today . Supporting him are white-clad backup singers, all lined up in a row, and a few modern dancers in swivel chairs, who occasionally spring to life when the song's lyrics move them. [from [...]

Hailing from that Snail n Baguette loving country that is consistently making the rest of the world look bad are Birdy Nam Nam. I can just see the French people now, sitting in their little chairs with their ciggarette holders and stripey black and white shirts laughing in a downward fashion while simultaneously twindling their moustaches and painting pictures of fruit mocking the rest of zee world..."ello, why can't zees people make zee musik like us - Emmanuelle bring me some BAGUETTE!!!"........But hey, we can't all be musical genius' so we need people like Birdy Nam Nam to show us [...]

Hey there! Baltimore is hoppin' tonight with some sweel shows at two swell venues. The Talking Head has what is sure to be a stand out show with Jukebox The Ghost, Pete & J, and Pretty & Nice. The Velvet Lounge has Poor But Sexy (ex-Dismemberment Plan), The Bloodsugars, and Typefighter while the Rock and Roll Hotel has My Brightest Diamond and Clare [...]

Shows are usually pretty limited over the winter, especially on weekdays. Following the trend, this week is a little light. Most being one city stops, but with some definite highlights. My Brightest Diamond (photo from r5productions ) Tuesday In my opinion, Rachael Yamagata is under-appreciated. She creates elegant melodies and well-textured songs. When I first saw her perform, it was in 2004. She was a better version of Fiona Apple and her latest album [...]

In the beginning of the era where hair cuts were kooky and outrageous, where clothing was made up of cut-out fluro curtains, daggy tweed jackets and large, white brand name sneakers and where music was made up of joyful pop and dag's looking cool, there was a band that rested in the heart of it all, which we fondly remember as Journey . When t hey hired lead singer Steve Perry he bought to the band a clean pop style that was welcomed by fans and their [...]

words & photos by Faith-Ann Young The Coathangers played in the den upstairs at Pianos to a jammed crowd of hipsters during the Sub Pop/Hardly Art/Suicide Squeeze CMJ night on Friday, October 24th. As previously mentioned , the Atlanta all-girl group recently started calling Suicide Squeeze their label home. The chicks reminded me of the ultimate punk girl band- the type that subsists off of cigarettes and reverb, who [...]
