The latest artist to enter Viva Radio's Me+You studio is Glass Rock and, as usual, we've got a sneak peek for you of their session. Their aptly titled debut, Tall Firs Meet Soft Location , defines the band's make-up. Tall Firs coaxed Kathy Leisen, as the band puts it on MySpace, "out of retirement" to collaborate and create the band Glass Rock. And like those by Tall Firs, this album finds a home on Ecstatic Peace. I think I'll let Ted Shumaker, mastermind and radio [...]
This album grows soft and tall and is rather magical at times. The third song especially, which is called 'possession'; an unassuming three minute combination of acoustic guitar, mellifluous bass and reverbed electric bobbing on the soft swell instigated by the rolling tom drum rhythm.
+Tall Firs (מי?)

Glass Rock: Tall Firs Meets Soft Location Ecstatic Peace have a busy release schedule this Autumn, part of which is this collaboration between Tall Firs and Soft Location. I liked Tall Firs' 2008 album Too Old To Die Young. This doesn't quite work as well; on the plus side, Soft Location's Kathy Leisen has a haunting voice that's part Cat Power and part Siouxsie Sue. Her voice and the light psych-pop arrangements sound fine [...]

So, I don't know if I've already mentioned this enough already, but I'm going to NEW YORK on Sunday for a week of tomfoolery and Big Apple based fun. We've also chosen this week in particular to head across the sea as it's CMJ Music Marathon and there are some pretty fucking cool bands playing. A fair few that we've featured on this here blog in fact. Hooray for us and coolness! But, my problem is I just can't process this list of bands who are playing. There are too many for my [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
After twenty-two bands and three comics over the previous two days, did I have some gas left in the tank for the final day of All Tomorrow's Parties New York? Of course! Most attendees heeded Warren Zevon's advice that they'll sleep when they're dead. Of the bands on the final day, the ones I was most interested in seeing were bands I'd seen before, but in different incarnations or playing different material. The most radical of these were the first two, the Boredoms and Caribou. The Boredoms have moved far on from their days of [...]

words by Black Bubblegum , photos by Ryan Muir some of the stars of ATP NY 2009 What's almost the exact opposite of a soothing set of Seven Swans performed by one of the most delicate singers in indie rock? Try nine drummers (including Hisham Bharoocha , Zach Hill , and Kid Millions among other notables) bashing your fucking skull for so [...]

Describing themselves as "a melancholy blend of Nick Cave melodrama, Shadows twang and Roy Orbison croon", An Axe no doubt have a dark flair to their music. Fittingly, their debut EP Some, When Alone, Cease To Exist (which, as you can above, has some seriously gorgeous artwork) was recorded in a church crypt no less in the midst of winter. The EP is the first of a trilogy; the second already recorded and slated for release in December, and the third written and currently in production. A full album is also in the process [...]

The Mars Volta are set to play the 10 Years Of ATP Festival . The three-day bash, which celebrates a decade of All Tomorrow's Parties festivals , will be taking place at Butlins' Minehead resort in England from December 11-13. The band will join previously announced acts including Modest Mouse , Yeah Yeah Yeahs , and Deerhoof . For more information go to atpfestival.com . Mars Volta [...]
