Skybox are a local Chicago indie pop outfit comprised of Tim Ellis and Christian Fields, Mike Holtz and Dan Ingenthron. They've made a name for themselves with outlandish live shows and toured in support of artists like Ben Folds, Tilly and The Wall, Tally Hall and The Figurines. Most of our sessions (and content) are admittedly skewed to folk, America and alt-country, but I've spent two weeks visiting and revisiting Skybox's recent release, Morning After Cuts . Unlike our discussion about Midlake yesterday , Skybox keeps you on your toes and varies their sound from one [...]
Kicking off what should be a very busy 2010, the D.C. indie pop outfit Jukebox the Ghost have mapped out dates for a Spring tour. The engagements, which kick off on March 3rd in Boston and see the band paired up with Tally Hall, will be used for some long overdue road testing. Yep, the band finally plans to follow up its masterful debut Let Live and Let Ghosts in 2010! In fact, speaking of that new album, while there is currently no title or release date, Jukebox recently previewed [...]

The set is only the 12th independently distributed album to top the Billboard 200 chart since SoundScan began powering the list in May of 1991. Vampire Weekend not only celebrates its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, but the New York band also notches its best sales week yet. The [...]

Every year I say that I'm going to tone down the amount of shows that I go to, and every year I end up seeing more than the year before. This year's final tally sits at 143 different artists to have graced the live stage in my presence, including three more than I still haven't gotten around to reviewing but I will. Eventually. Of course, I have friends that have probably seen that amount in a weekend but for an old married guy, I'd say that's still a pretty obscene number. Overall though, this year has been a [...]
Any year that features films from music-oriented directors Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino is going to be a good year for soundtracks. Many of the films' soundtracks this year were highly anticipated, with indie rock star power attached early on to films like The Twilight Saga: New Moon ( Thom Yorke , Grizzly Bear , Bon Iver ) and Where the Wild Things Are (Karen O. of Yeah Yeah Yeahs ), but not all delivered on that promise when the visuals were married in the [...]

Also, you may remember that Javelin have recently been signed to Luaka Bop . Dr. [...]

The Holiday season is in full swing so I don't know how much time you'll have for rockin' but there are lots of choices that you can try to fit into your busy schedule. On Thursday the show at Church looks pretty good with Eddie Japan, Sidewalk Driver and Blizzard of '78. Friday has a couple of cool shows. At the Paradise is Will Dailey's Festivál Holidád benefit for Toys for Tots Will Daily & the Rivals, The Luxury, Violet Nine and Brendan Boogie & the Best Intentions (Great music for a great cause!) and then at Precinct you can [...]

Welcome to December! On Thursday I have one word to say and that word is Sloan. They'll be at TTs with Scarce and it's a show I've been looking forward to for a long time, yay! Friday has many many choices, some might say too many choices. My top two are The Satanics at the Armory (cause nuthin' says the holiday season like devil music? plus they play so rarely these days it should be a blast) and the Weisstronauts Holiday Party at Sally O'Briens. Since both shows are in Somerville, I'm thinking do it all. On Saturday My Own [...]

Nate Ruess (The Format) has decided to push some musical buttons here, much like Bryan Scary and The Shedding Tears by layering dense instrumentation, gospel choirs, electronic pulses and the kitchen sink. That kitchen sink includes pop god Roger Manning Jr. and producer Steven McDonald (Redd Kross ). Opening with "Be Calm" it's deceptively sweet ballad opening ironically turns into loud theatrical melodic chaos. Along with with ex- Anatholla member Andrew Dost and Steel Train frontman Jack Antonoff , the band is relentlessly accurate in it's name. But I would add [...]
