[image by Songbirdnest ] We have taped so many shows in the last two months that the backlog of recordings is approaching 30 different sets. There are still CMJ shows that have not been posted! Taco Bell's Feed the Beat promotion has had a stumble or two in the past--such as when famed vegetarian Ted Leo won without even entering. However, giving bands free food on the road is always a great promotion (and, for the record, Taco Bell DOES offer vegetarian options). The announced winners for 2009 are after the jump. Though I'm wondering if "Electronic Six" from the list of winners is supposed to be "Electric Six." Let's hope it's not a Ted Leo-ish flub! Winners of the 2009 Feed the [...]
photos by Liz Pelly Jeff the Brotherhood are currently on tour with Shonen Knife . Both band played Maxwell's on Saturday, November 15th with Girls At Dawn . One night later (last night) they played at Great Scott in Allston, MA. The pictures, and one video, in this post are from that show. The killer double bill hits NYC on Tuesday, Nov. 17th (tomorrow) at Brooklyn Bowl. Golden Triangle [...]

This Wednesday, November 18, the Middle East Upstairs will be the spot for a great line-up of rock 'n' roll. Cub Country is touring in support of their July release "Stretch That Skull Cover and Smile." This band Formed in 1999 as a side project for then Jets to Brazil bassist Jeremy Chatelain. Upon listening to this record, one could pick out the Jets to Brazil influence in the songwriting, but the weapons have changed – instead of distorted guitars and pounding drums, Cub Country [...]
A couple of quickies... The excellent site Music Ruined My Life has turned me on to this gentlemen named Frankie Turner . Sorta an angrier Billy Bragg / Ted Leo . I am quite impressed. See for yourself: We recorded again this weekend... a demonic, demented version of the old children's' staple "Old McDonald". And yes, it's for another movie... about a satanically possessed "speak and spell". I'll post it as soon [...]
We're stickin' and movin' with another round of lightning fast musical jabs. Check out what I haven't had time to properly give you: Ben Davis, Charge It Up! This third solo album from Davis hits stores on January 5th. It's a dose of warped power pop that should tide you over until the new Ted Leo album comes out. Ben Davis' Myspace Pick A Piper, Pick A Piper This is an EP from a band that

W ith Primavera Club (aka Primavera Sound 's little winter brother) less than a month away, I for one am getting mightily excited. I'm flying to Barcelona in a little under two weeks, (Eliza will follow a little later) and we'll be spending the holiday season there (at my mom's house), only returning home in early January. I've collected ten tracks that I'd like to see played over the five days of the festival.. 1. So Cow [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Joshua Gaylord's debut novel, Hummingbirds , caused Kirkus reviews to call him "an impressive new voice in American fiction," and I have to agree. Gaylord eloquently paints the relationships and interactions of his characters, both adult and teen, male and female, with rare and impressive insight into human character in this compelling story of an all-girls high school.. Library Journal wrote of the book: [...]

As I suspected would happen, I forgot to turn off my alarm clock last night, and was jolted to life this morning with far less than the appropriate amount of sleep. The Boys Are Leaving Town began blasting through my room, and in my confused haze I came to realize just how much the song reminds me of Sometimes from My Bloody Valentine (listen to it here ); as a big fan of shoegazing, this pleased me a great deal. The Boys Are Leaving Town is the opening track to the Japandroids [...]

It is as if all the years of awkward teenage flirting and courtship prepared us well. I mean, we all saw this coming. Matador Records and True Panther Sounds , after a year of trying to make the public believe they were just friends, are now joined in label bliss. For any music lover, this is a match made in heaven. As Matablog reports, Matador Records has officially purchased True Panther Sounds (though TPS founder Dean Bien will remain be on board handling all of the label's daily duties). The courtship [...]
