Everybody go awwwwhhhh. Think this is the first time I've thought that shoegaze could actually sound sweet, normally my reaction to it is to well up inside or coil in the corner with near fatal goosebumpery. 'Loveloops' is taken from the Estonian's 4th LP 'After The Summer' and was produced by Norman Blake. Wait, Norman flippin' Blake, that explains things, he of the pole position monopolising Grand Prix making Teenage Fanclub. In truth Pia Fraus were always a step above the bandwagonesque of a torrent of nice indie bands, they like to pack lots of decent tunes you see. 'Loveloops' [...]

i might actually be re-posting about 20 shows, fyi. anyway, one band that i really dont think about until i listen to em, and then i want more is teenage fanclub. if you've never checked em out definitely check out bandwagonesque - one of the best records of the 90's, or their "greatest hits" record, four thousand seven hundred sixty six seconds . purchase em here . this is a fm broadcast of teenage fanclub performing at the paradiso in amsterdam on 11.20.95. its an fm broadcast, btw. 1. intro [...]

Time's whipping by so fast that I have to start planning out these last weeks of 2009 on CTRR. Last year, there were several festive year-end features on the old yuletide blog (groan if you must), including my Year-End Round-Up weekly mixes , the countdown of my Top 40 albums of the year , the Christmas weekly mix , and the New Year's Eve party mix . And I still have to work in my Day of 200 songs before all of this kicks off. This week's mix will be a winter one despite [...]

adam and his advising uncle its been a bit, and i really need to try and get more artists for this "feature" but, not surprisingly, i am really bad at following up with folks. this edition of "tell me something..." features london's the tailors and their front man, adam killip. their upcoming release for trash aesthetics is due out 11.30 and they have decided to call it, come dig me up . i have spent the better part of a couple months with said record, and its probably the growiest record of the [...]
Shoegazing My Way Into A Friday Afternoon. One of our favorite tracks of 2009 comes from the sophomore album of Norway s I Was A King. Can t stop listening to it. It s like Teenage FanClub, My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain got together ...

Under normal circumstances, the four band lineup has become something that I do not look forward to as much as I once did. My attention span and irritability level after 10pm is not what it used to be, and the thought of attending a late show with a bill of more than two bands just seems like too daunting a task sometimes. It also often results in me becoming a bit of a harsher critic by the time I get to bands three and four simply because by that point of the evening I've become a grumpy old man. [...]
Snow Patrol Prize Pack Speaking of new releases, on Tuesday Snow Patrol released a 2 CD compilation of singles, covers, rarities and album tracks in celebration of their 15 year anniversary. Here's a little press blurbage about Up To Now , their new career spanning retrospective: Up To Now includes three previously unreleased songs, "Just Say Yes" "Dark Roman Wine" and "Give Me Strength", as well songs from the two albums Snow Patrol released on UK indie label [...]

This rock and stroll mini album by Chicago based The Yearbooks is reminiscent of the schmindie Brit pop brigade that infected the UK charts over a decade ago. Think The Boo Radleys or Teenage Fanclub . With passive vocals, plodding melodies and flaccid Stroke's guitar lines ' Have a Great Summer ' is a wishy-washy affair comprising of six melancholic pop numbers. Too inconspicuous to anything other than acceptable this bland offering sits awkwardly in the no man's land between New York rock [...]

Norway: a country of intense natural beauty, endless sunshine and the highest standards of living in the world. No wonder that I Was A King make music that's so happy the songs themselves are fit to burst, right? Well, kind of. I get the feeling that I Was A King are a little... well, bored of all the good times, and are trying out this whole 'miserable' thing, you know - to see what it's like. Naturally they partly fail, but that's no bad thing, resulting, as it does, in songs that [...]

Website Myspace The former member of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci provided support for Yo La Tengo saturday in Manchester. I wouldn't claim to be that familiar with the music of Euros Childs , but having sampled his support slot I'd describe it as marmite music, you either love it or hate it. With Euros on keyboards, complimented with a bass player and drummer, the music would probably be [...]
Founded in 1977, the Scruffs (one of the most talked about unknown bands) are readying their self-released fifth release, Conquest. Stephen Burns and Co. are back, with help from past and current members of Big Star, Belle And Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub and the Proclaimers. Known for their power pop ballads, the Scruffs are recreating a [...]

It's wonderful when a record label forms a distinct identity that you learn to trust. It's essentially the antithesis of the major label mentality, where you simply sign every cash cow you can get your hands on. That's not to say smaller labels don't have financial considerations and that they might not play into their artist selection process, but it's far less pronounced than when you're say...Sony BMG. There are only a few labels I actively follow and consider trustworthy - 4AD, Mute, Domino, Star Time (former home to the much-missed Tom Vek) and certainly Merge. I may [...]

Website Myspace Wilco came to the Academy Leeds (formerly the Town & Country Club) on a wet Tuesday night in November. Despite the limited americana/alt-country fanbase of Yorkshire having to choose between Wilco and Steve Earle both playing Leeds on the same night, the Academy was pretty near capacity, although not quite enough for the touts outside to be selling tickets off cheap. Wilco were supported by Clientele [...]

THE RUMBLE: SEATTLE is back TONIGHT @ The Crocodile for another FREE night of music by bands on the rise, brought to you by a collective of partners that prove indie rock can support indie rock > Future Sounds, WOXY, The Stranger, Line Out, Easy Street Records, Spin Magazine & Spin Earth and The Wig . Headlining the evening is the Seattle based act, HOTELS , a band we've been smitten by since the moment we first heard "Kite Fight ". To learn more about [...]
This one sounds pretty interesting, Mislaid is a collaboration between Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub, Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci with traditional musicians Nuala Kennedy & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and the four of them are playing Whelan's on Halloween night and thanks to Foggy Notions I've got a pair of tickets to give away to the gig. To be in with a chance to win send your answer to this question to thrillpiercomp@gmail.com with "mislaid" in the subject line. Norman Blake played Whelan's last year as part of who's backing band?
