Cover-Up Crush: The Last Waltz this Saturday at the Lizard Lounge

Cover-Up Crush: The Last Waltz this Saturday at the Lizard Lounge For months now, Brendan Boogie has run a phenomenally successful show series at the Lizard Lounge called The Cover-Up with Brendan Boogie . Each show takes one artist or theme and all the performing bands play cover sets accordingly. So far they've done Queen, The Black Crowes, Elvis Costello, and Kidz Rock (in which yours truly performed). Now we know that Boogs gets an awful lot of airtime on this blog, especially for such a scumbag*, but this Saturday night, his latest installment of The Cover-Up re-enacts The Band's The Last Waltz . Performing are: [...]

To Do List: Saturday, October 31, 2009 (Halloween)

To Do List: Saturday, October 31, 2009 (Halloween) Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2009 WIZARDRY @ UNION POOL 484 Union Ave Brooklyn, NY 11211 FREE, 9PM There are a whole bunch of parties tonight where the location is secret (thanks, VICE), but there are some shows that are just plain weird. For instance, Deer Tick will be performing as The Sex Pistols at Brooklyn Bowl. But there's one band for whom dressing up is an everyday occurrence. Halloween is simply another day for the band Wizardry , and that may just be the reason I recommend seeing them on a night like tonight. [...]

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Orenda Fink, Old Canes, UUVVWWZ, Beep Beep and guest Suzannah Johannes are all on the bill there tonight. Check out a list of other shows [...]

CMJ 2009

CMJ 2009 Generally speaking, I don't like to mix business with pleasure. This is mostly because I like to give all of my attention to the task in front of me. If it's business time , then I make sure I handle my business. Likewise, if it's time to party, then I want to know that all of my business has been handled so that I don't have any responsibilities holding me back when I go on a wild, booze fueled rock n roll adventure that rages on into the early morning hours. Of course, that is generally speaking. [...]

CMJ Posts 2009 Schedule

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]

Full CMJ Schedule Released Today

The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

PettyFest @ Bowery Ballroom - setlist & pics (Adam Green, Strokes & Killers members, Nicole Atkins, Kid Rock, more)

photos by Tim Griffin "I went to Pettyfest 2009 at Bowery Ballroom [Thursday] night, which was sick. Lots of drunk and stoned people shouting along to the hits and some great performers-- Nicole Atkins, Adam Green, Steve Schlitz, Antony Ellis , members of The Strokes and The Killers . One of my favorite performances-- and this took me by surprise -- was the dude from Augustana singing "You Got Lucky." They're [...]

Night Glare: Billy Lee Riley

Night Glare: Billy Lee Riley I was saddened by the news that my old friend and business colleague Billy Lee Riley had just passed away from cancer at age 75 . I am sorry it took Billy's passing to inspire me to write this long overdue account of our friendship, but his passing on August 2 was overlooked by most in this summer which has claimed so many people. Go on iTunes and buy "Red Hot" or "Flying Saucer Rock and Roll" by Billy Lee Riley and see if you can tell where raw, high energy punk music reared it's [...]

Nick Cave Reads

If I am to confess to one teenage fangirl-esque delight, it's listening to Nick Cave speak. I've enjoyed his 2000 lecture, The Secret Life of the Love Song, countless times over, savoring each word as if it were gospel, eager for more releases in this vein. Well, my prayers have been answered, as Cave intends to perform and record a reading of his latest novel, The Death of Bunny Munro , which has been touted by critics as a combination of Franz Kafka, Cormac McCarthy, and Benny Hill . On July [...]
