Mall'd to Death , a new project out of Minneapolis featuring Dan Jensen ( Off With Their Heads ), Dani Barstad ( the Terrordactyls ) and Tyler Barrett has posted some songs online which can be heard here . According to their myspace blog: The idea came about following observations made by Josh Caterer at the Triple Rock regarding how much Minnesotans seem to like their malls and really take it to the next level (hence name), and a desire to make music that was the complete antithesis of such. Eventually songs were written, members [...]

Evan Dando is a living legend to those of us who grew up in the '80s and '90s when alternative rock had just been given a name. Some diehard fans of the Lemonheads still think it's blasphemous that he has been and still is recording and touring under the name "Lemonheads", even though he's the only original member still with the band. However, for anyone who is a fan of hits such as "Into Your Arms" and "It's a Shame About Ray" and wants to hear these live, along with reinterpretations of tunes such as [...]
Love Letter From Olympia Today I received a wonderful package in the mail box from Washington indie record label Electricity/Lust , who has just released a limited edition 73 vinyl pressing by New Zealand's favourite American darlings Polka Dot Dot Dot. Michael Ryan Dellinger, founder of Electricity/Lush just sent me a follow up email explaining the story behind the label. It's a story inspired by friendship and years of hanging out with wonderfully creative people. The story starts on a bus in Olympia... [...]

How cool is this? Scientists have discovered a type of fly that will lay eggs on the dreaded fire ants , which then essentially turn the ants into zombies, thereby rendering them harmless: "The maggot that hatches inside the ant eats away at the brain, and the ant starts exhibiting what some might say is zombie-like behavior." You can either use your imagination to ponder this awesomeness or read all about it right here while you listen to these zombie/ant tunes. [...]

As usual Chicago has delivered the insane weather. Currently it is snowing! It friggin' April! As I walk up and down Michigan Ave and State St, all I really crave is one of those amazing art school dance parties. I want to stop worrying about carrying a coat or proper shoes that won't get damaged from the salt. I composed this list out of the desire for a tropical drink, sun and the ability to wear a spring outfit. I posted some of the best songs that let me reminisce of those May days when the end of school is upon many [...]

They're not children. But they have the vulnerability and flavor of youth. The kazoos compliment the heart wrenching sorrows and accompany the boat shoe aesthetic. It's as if The Dresden Dolls, Lily Allen and Thao had babies and that baby turned out to be The Terrordactyls. This duo hails from Washington and has managed to command the attention of a core fan base. I myself had become a fan long before they recorded with Kimya Dawson, of Juno fame. It was Overcast Summer's beach-like sound that commanded my attention. The song itself paints the image of a beachy and hazy Washington with the feeling [...]
This year has been pretty great. I started it off in Costa Rica for 10 days, and I finished it with 5 in Florida. The music wasn't too bad either… we were introduced to great new bands, but lost legends like Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Bo Diddly, Isaac Hayes, Richard Wright, Odetta, Eartha Kitt, and George Carlin (who I know shouldn't count under music legends but I adored him). I must say I'm really looking forward to next year's selections (Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, Chris Cornell, Lily Allen, The Decemberists… and that's just what's coming [...]

CHAMPAGNE CHAMPAGNE It's the weekend, meaning that there are a lot more things to do. These are the two and half days where you should feel bad, sitting in the smelly darkness of your house wasting your hours interacting with online orcs and dragons. You don't need to do that, get out there and go to one of these great shows! FRIDAY! PWRFL PWR w/ Grandpall Jookabox, The Terrordactyls @ THE VERA PROJECT or The Dirtbombs [...]

We saw 137 bands , but it is our journalistic duty to narrow them down into a small, opinionated list that you will undoubtedly disagree with. So for our final 2008 CMJ Music Marathon post, we asked our five correspondents to give us their top five bands from this year's festivities. To jump to a specific writers picks: Derek Evers , Zach Timm , Elizabeth Cawein , Will Suter , Jenn Misko . Editor Derek Evers' best of the [...]

Each Wednesday, Rocks Off arbitrarily appoints one lucky local performer or group "Artist of the Week," bestowing upon them all the fame and grandeur such a lofty title implies. Know a band or artist that isn't awful? Email their particulars to introducingliston@gmail.com . Photo by Grant Hickey It's clear that youthful pop-rockers The Wild Moccasins, all of whom are under 23, are possessed of clear talent and gobs of potential, a point solidified by the presence of rhythm guitarist Cody Swann's Bronson-esque almost-mustache. [...]

I am not going to lie; I was definitely hurting this morning. Two days straight of incessant partying took a toll on my body and I needed some recovery time. With a belly full of pasta and my Dayquil fully kicked in I was ready to plow through another day of talented musicians and interesting takes on what music could be. My first stop of the day was at the Knitting Factory for the Fanatic Promotion day party. It was an intriguing line up of eclectic artists that caught my eye and as a plus [...]
Almost all of my Wednesday was spent at Crash Mansion, where there was a showcase displaying talent mostly culled from the Pacific Northwest. I arrived just in time for the beginning of the set by Lujo Records' Look Mexico. With a brand of emo-influenced pop that reminds me of Deep Elm records but less angry and with more beards and plaid involved. Their valiant effort at winning over the sparse afternoon crowd was not a losing one. [Look Mexico] Up next was Portland's Starfucker -- definitely one of the [...]
