Shhh...I have a secret for you. What, you say? That I've been MIA for a long time? Yeah, this is true, but I'm taking about something secretly canadian . I gotta tell you that Secretly Canadian's lineup gets more and more impressive by the week. The Seattle-based collective Throw Me the Statue released their second LP Createresque last August, and I've been meaning to write about it for a while now. As legend has it, the idea behind Throw Me the Statue began as a sort of mixtape for a girl, and has [...]

Hello and happy holidays! It's that time of the year again, when we SS-ers take a break fom being mere purveyors of fun recommendations, and resize our music-snob-critic hats for yet another year's worth of "songs from this year that we loved but you may not have heard". I'll try to keep the accompanying text down to a dull roar this year... 01. The Airborne Toxic Event, "Sometime Around Midnight" Sometimes I'm glad I'm not as tuned into the world of popular musical criticism as most (well, most who would go [...]

I'd love to be able to say I did this list in one shot, fired from the hip, and came out fearlessly and decisively with my rock solid Top 20 Albums list ready for prime time. The truth is, unfortunately filled with scribbles, crumpled paper balls, wishing I had 25 slots, and a few question marks that will inevitably be answered in a year or two from now when I look back on this list and laugh at myself. I must admit my 2008 list held up pretty well for me over time. Even my 2007 [...]

Night of the Living Dead Atlanta's Carnivores Rise From the Grave By Julia Reidy The first time I saw Carnivores play, they were members of a band that is now dead. In early 2008, the four were still playing around Atlanta as Chainestereo, and I had low expectations. But when they opened for The Ruby Suns and Throw Me The Statue (two much more pop-inflected groups) at the Drunken Unicorn, from the first few damaged chords, I was hooked. Keyboardist Caitlin Lang started singing and whipping her hair around – one of my photos [...]
So here we are, my favourite songs of the year. What be they? How sound them? All is revealed. I think what strikes me about the music of the last twelve months is the blizzard of originality. An awful lot of new sounds were made. It's a little like the melting-pot at the centre of western music worked very well this year, because a lot of these songs have influences that are wide and disparate. Is this list, taken as a whole, better than that of 2008? I think it just might be. But only just. The artwork is what [...]
Sometimes, the most obvious answer is right in front of your face. I went around and around, mentally juggling my favorite songs of the year – all of which were great but none of which really stood out above the rest. In a year that I felt was just sorta "eh," singling out one track as my favorite seemed daunting. (Hell, I even considered a Yeasayer song – Tightrope – and anyone who knows me knows how ridiculous that sounds.) But then I recently heard Phoenix's [...]

Here is my list of the best songs of the second half of 2009 . Be sure to read the first half's list here and treat the two posts as a tag team of epic jams. Wow, what a year. TBE is a month shy of it's first birthday and now I have to wrap it's whole existence into a short list? Tough times. Well, since objectivity is a myth, I am gonna keep my Best 20.9 Songs [...]

While googling to find our readers the mp3 links for the Sirius XMU Top 41 of 2099 playlist, it struck me that all these songs have one thing in common. Almost all of these tracks are available via free + legal mp3 sites such as rcrdlbl , Pitchfork , The Fader , Prefix Mag , I Guess I'm Floating , etc. Record labels and upstart bands take note! If you want your new music to make a mark, make an mp3 easy to find and download. [...]

Hey all, TSRE's countdown to 2010 marches on with a special New Year's Eve feature - 8 young artists/bands to keep an eye on in 2010 To start, some of my thoughts on the past year: 2009 has been a year of the new and the trailblazing. Everything I loved this year took me in new directions and pushed the boundaries of how mainstream music could sound. From Merriweather Post Pavilion that will heavily influence much future music to the nascent DIY, glo-fi, and woodsy movements, established bands and precocious [...]

Julia Wilson is so many shades of awesome she is like the sister I wish I had. Not only does she manages one of the most exciting labels around , she also runs her own exciting record label called Rice is Nice . If the name also rings a bell, it may be because you have seen Julia's name occasionally pop up as a photo credit on TWYE. So she is not only passionate about music, she also a rad photographer who has snapped the likes of Metallica , Flaming Lips , Youth Group , [...]

2009 was another great year for live music , slightly edging out last year for me with a grand total of 97 shows, in 26 different venues for 251 sets of music by 215 different bands, with 26 bands logging in 2 or more. Continuing to be one of the best live music venues anywhere, Johnny Brenda's topped the list with 25 visits. The other places where you could have found me hanging out this past year being World Cafe Live (15), The M Room (11), Kung Fu Necktie (7) and The Khyber , The [...]
We've seen an unprecedented year of new music in 2009. There's been enough diversity to satisfy practically anyone's music tastes. We definitely had a surge in surfer sound revivals, dreamy bedroom pop, lo-fi garage rock, and psychedelic electronica, but we also heard just about everything in between. It'll be interesting to see what trends emerge next year. Before we leave 2009 for good, we wanted to recap of our top rated album releases and close out the year with our top 100 songs. [...]

39. Μ. Ward - "Hold Time" ( Hold Time [...]
