Sebastian Mlynarski When I rounded up all the bits of information around Holly Miranda's solo project back in January , I had no notion that interest in it would eclipse that given to her main band, The Jealous Girlfriends . But her more atmospheric approach is certainly more in line with what people expect/want to hear wafting out of Brooklyn these days and it has apparently tickled more ears than the Girlfriends' heaver, more guitar-driven rock did. So while the Girlfriends take a deserved break, Miranda has been busy - [...]

Our correspondent wades into the Avant Blancmange to deal an ineffective deathblow with the logic shield and the sword of meaning. As year end lists become a predominant concern I find myself wanting to choose releases like this, if anything they at least illustrate the personal/musical chaos that $ tries to formulate into some cogent order of lifestyle choices.

[image by Songbirdnest ] We have taped so many shows in the last two months that the backlog of recordings is approaching 30 different sets. There are still CMJ shows that have not been posted! That being said, we will continue to be very active during the Winter, recording a large variety of artists. If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you're promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get me on the list and make sure everyone who needs to approve [...]

Unlike the book signing I went to a few weeks back with Iggy Pop , Grunge was an era that looking back totally changed my life. I am sure I am not alone. The entire movement itself made me aware that other music was out there that the main stream media wasn't telling me about. It made me dig deeper then what MTV and my alternative radio station were playing. The beauty of it is that it was still a time when MTV was playing videos, and Clear Channel didn't own the air waves. Now, I was young [...]

Recently took in the well-conceived All Tomorrow's Parties documentary- a film incorporating Super8, camcorder and mobile phone footage contributed by filmmakers, fans and musicians from the cult festival's history with major contributions from Jonathan Caouette and Vincent Moon. Featured in the film are performances from Battles, Sonic Youth, Belle And Sebastian, Patti Smith, Animal Collective, Grinderman, Iggy and the Stooges, Portishead, Mogwai, Slint, Grizzly Bear, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip, Daniel Johnston and The Boredoms. The ATP festival is unique for its band and fan curated lineups, lack of corporate sponsorships, and country club [...]
The Washington City Paper lists five songs about books. In the Guardian , Martin Amis reviews Vladimir Nabokov's posthumous novel, The Original of Laura (in bookstores on Tuesday). The Baltimore City Paper interviews Deastro's Randy Chabot. CP: References to cartoons definitely come up a lot in descriptions of your music. Is it that much of an actual influence? RC: [...]

Violent Soho have been signed to Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, and their debut album will be out via the label (a co-release with Universal) in March of 2010. The band are in Chicago tonight, but will be playing a bunch of New York City shows in the near future. Considering the shows will be with the likes of Band of Skulls, Dead Weather, and Jaguar Love, checking out at least one of them might be a good idea. The band's schedule is listed after the jump. Violent Soho tour dates: 11/13 [...]

Thurston Moore. (Andrew Kesin) Thurston Moore is a musician who, aside from being in the legendary band Sonic Youth, has collaborated with everyone from Glenn Branca to Lydia Lunch to Mike Watt. Moore is also a writer, poet, ardent supporter of bold weirdos and fiery rockers, and owner of Ecstatic Peace Records . It was announced recently that an offshoot of the label -- Ecstatic Peace Library -- will begin publishing art books in 2010. [...]

Samara Lubelski: Future Slip I've seen Samara Lubelski's name on various albums in a supporting role (including with Thurston Moore, whose label she's now on). But I was surprised to find that this is her fifth solo album. It's so understated that it takes a couple of plays to reveal its qualities. The songs have a psychedelic buzz, aided by her floaty voice, which put me in mind of Espers (especially 'Walking In The [...]
(click image to enlarge) Last September The Knitting Factory hosted a birthday celebration for the Fender Jazzmaster with performances by Tom Verlaine, Nels Cline, J Mascis and Lee Ranaldo & Thurston Moore. Of the Ranaldo/Moore performance the Fender website says: "When their fingers proved unsuitable for achieving the next level of dissonance, the musicians used tuning forks [...]

From November 1st through 22nd Performa organization is clobbering this town with it's third series of events. Over 110 of them in fact, spread out over 80 venues, all blurring lines between art, dance, music, film, graphic design and even some culinary action, magic, and Polish Futurism. It's an impressive calendar. A few events are especially exciting amongst WFMU staffers, one of which is a two night stand at the Gramercy Theater November 20-21 curated by renowned artist Mike Kelley ( whose grown-man-baby-at Burning Man odyssey I just caught at SculptureCenter [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News The talents of Sonic Youth 's Thurston Moore and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright aren't just limited to music. The event, curated by singer-songwriter Justin Bond and New Yorker theater critic Hilton Als, kicks off Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7PM at New York's La MaMa Galleria and runs through Nov. 22. Halloween, my favorite holiday of them all, is just a day away, and I'm particularly jazzed that it falls on a Saturday, allowing for an ample dose of mischief and macabre outside of the typical work week. I'll be hitting the town, dressed as the late, great Frank Tovey, covered and smothered in feathers and raising hell in the deepest, darkest corners of Williamsburg. Otherwise, I've compiled a list of ten darker tracks for this year's festivities, each invoking the more sinister and supernatural elements of Halloween. With that in mind, this playlist is certainly not for the [...]

Now that Trees is once again a viable option for catching a worthwhile local/indie show (a million thanks to RTB2/Oso Closo/KDGE's Local Show) we have no problem putting tonight's offering at the top of our list, despite 2 pretty B.A. national shows in town. Mark from the Local Show continues his Wednesday night bookings at Trees (heads up: they'll move to Thursdays starting in Nov.) in a quest to select the band that gets to open the next Edgefest. Tonight's show, starting at 9PM, features contestants The Roomsounds, Slider Pines, and Young & Brave, and as if that [...]
