Who doesn't like free stuff?? Sure, I enjoy going to shows, but the experience is so much better when useful (or tasty) freebies are offered up to the audience. This week I went to see Times New Viking and Kurt Vile at Public Assembly. Great show, but thanks to the folks at Babelgum , not only did I get to drink for free, Ice Cream Man was on hand to fill my empty stomach with some mint chocolate cookie goodness. What's the best freebie you've ever gotten at [...]

At the cool little space known as Public Assembly, Babelgum and the Ice Cream Man decided to throw a party last night (Nov. 17th). Not only was there an open bar and free ice cream to celebrate the completion of the Ice Cream Man's journey across America and the music festival scene , but musical acts Kurt Vile and Times New Viking were set to entertain the assembled mass. Not bad for a Tuesday. The space was clamoring, the alcohol was flowing, and clusters of chatty people seemed ready for some [...]

Album of the Quarter : A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar Runners up: Memory Tapes - Seek Magic , Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem I am well aware that this podcast is a good month and a half removed from the end of 2009's third quarter, and that we are balls deep in the year's capping three-month span. But, perhaps the extra reflection has further winnowed the included tracks down from the fickle week to week whims of the blogosphere? Let's just pretend that that's [...]

Anytime you can combine the greatness of free music, free booze, and free ice cream into one amazing event you pretty much assure yourself a full room with a lot of happy people. Last night, to celebrate the completion of "Road Trippin' with Ice Cream Man" , the good folks at Babelgum threw a party showing off footage from the 32-episode series and giving us music from a solo Kurt Vile and Times New Viking. Of course there are drawbacks to this type of show, namely the invite only crowd full of industry types that [...]

To Whichever BBQ Bro It May Concern, Hey everybody! What's good? Not much here. Just getting ready to fuck up a can of Campbell's Chunky for lunch. Should rule. Welp... heard you all got in a lil' pickle outside of Nashville in Hopkinsville, Ky. Got nailed for having a lil' "controlled substance" for party hard solutions. That's a bummer, man. It's kinda like the song "Rollin' Dirty" with the Bone Thug bros. I probably would've been humming that to myself if I were in a similar situation. Anyway, good to hear you're out of [...]
By Lars Gotrich As soon as a musical movement gets a name, someone is already declaring it dead. Sometimes you wonder about the people who coin the terms; whether they regret the mass categorization of a tight-knit group's creative output. It's almost baffling how quickly "hot new thing" status gets doled out, only to receive backlash, inspire an academic write-up in The New Yorker , experience backlash against the backlash, become loved ironically, and then wind up staunchly defended by those who've been there since the beginning. Because, you know, it's just rock 'n' [...]

Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2009 JAVELIN & JUICEBOXXX @ MONSTER ISLAND 128 River Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $7, 8PM When I recommended Juiceboxxx 's show yesterday at Cake Shop, I hadn't realized he was also playing again tonight. However, this one proves to be even better because also on the bill is Javelin, a band we caught early on during CMJ and also at Northside Festival . Both acts are highly recommended. Golem @ Cake Shop Air Waves @ Brooklyn Bowl Evangelicals @ Union Hall Appomattox & [...]

Their last few tour dates this week: 11/18 - Ursinus College, PA 11/19 - NY NY @ The Cake Shop 11/21 - Allston, MA @ Great Scott. Opening for Times New Viking. They've also got a bunch of tour video footage coming our way soon and have left us with this tasty quote: [...]

Frankly, I can't believe Times New Viking's new album, Born Again Revisited , hasn't gotten more attention. It got an 8.1 on Pitchfork, but didn't get Best New Music. It's just as hard to listen to as their older work, with just as many hidden pop melodies. Listen to the mp3 below. It might sound difficult to some listeners, but wait until the chorus. "Move to California/ I hear you'll have a better time." A philosophy I've grown to doubt, but a fabulous line in the song. Plus, their shows are very cool as they play whole-heartedly on ramshackle [...]

Two Syllable' s That Ghost is out making the rounds with his new EP, Get It Get Out . The digital EP plays like bottled lightening exploding from a once bustling Detroit rock scene. Some lo-fi wares thin, but the EP sounds more polished than, say, a Times New Viking record or any (fill in the blank skuzz band). The EP is streaming here and info of where to purchase the EP is found below. That Ghost is touring the Left Coast for the moment with Austinites, [...]

By SR and DL Followed By Static / Little Teeth (Hot Box Pizza located at 214 E Hickory in Denton): Pretty sure this is the same Little Teeth I saw play in an Austin backyard last year, and their challenging music, specifically the vocals, should make for a pretty interesting time at this pizza place this evening. Show is free and starts at 7 PM. (DL) Blues Control / Silver Shampoo / Darktown Strutters / Fungi Girls / Wild In The [...]

Who : Blakroc Title : Blakroc Release Date : November 27th Label : Blakroc Thoughts : With their bluesy version of rock music you wouldn't necessarily take The Black Keys as fans of hip hop, but based on their new project Blakroc (both the name of their hip hop group and new record label) the band show that they aren't just fans of the genre they have great taste in the [...]
Monday: The Jesus Lizard @ Irving Plaza 9pm $25 [ tix ] This week as folks look forward to next week's holiday a number of indie rock heavyweights will be hitting town to deliver the goods before the Holiday Season truly kicks into gear. First up are heavy rock luminaries The Jesus Lizard. They already left us in awe with their 9/11 references and stage diving at ATP NY, then blew away the invited crowd at the Vice Halloween bash, now their doing a few shows that aren't quite as exclusive as those [...]
