This is a sort of catch-up NRT, as I forgot to do this last week and a lot of cool stuff came out last week. So shame on me for the 2nd time today. La Roux, La Roux (Cherrytree/Interscope) Elly Jackson has been winning headlines lately over some fairly controversial (and yeah, in some cases outright stupid) statements made in the press about other bands, feminism, etc. However, I do find myself in agreement with something she recently said in The Guardian, the crux [...]

Ian Darken Something I learned yesterday - I wasn't able to get by on three hours of sleep when I was young, I sure as hell can't do it now. Blogging isn't so easy when your brain has the consistency of porridge, so I'm thankful that there's been a pile of new videos, sessions and streams amassing in my drafts folder which I can hopefully distill into some sort of post. And we'll begin with Athens, Georgia's Venice Is Sinking , who've got a new video, stream AND MP3 to share, all in honour of their [...]
I savored every slow-passing second in the heat—music from the likes of the Submarines, Mika Miko and Tiny Masters of Today, the latter pack of striplings enough to restore any lost faith in the rock verities, as well as the giddy confabs with pals from the RECORD , accidental meetings with ex-girlfriends; even the hi-skool snubs from industry barnacles and no-talents felt good, for such too is life under the municipal big top in rock 'n' roll's Greatest Show on Earth.

Today's Mix/Cover/Live + MP3 Roundup includes Midnight Masses, Wooden Shjips, Nada Surf & Tiny Masters of Today. Remix MP3: Tiny Masters Of Today - Real Good (Sunroof Remix) Cover MP3: Nada Surf - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out (Smiths Cover) Live [...]

One of the biggest topics this week has been the revival of Beatlemania thanks in large part to the release of the entire Beatles catalogue in remastered stereo/mono formats, along with "The Beatles: Rock Band" game. Yes, yesterday was a pretty big day in the world of a lot of Beatles fans, not to mention all the people who will just now discover the band thanks to the video game or simply by exploring the old album re-releases. Not that it's ever really been "uncool" to like The Beatles, but whenever sanctioned releases by the band's surviving members show up [...]
Oh, Los Campesinos... Why can't you make song titles a normal length, hmm? Do they all need to be sentences? Regardless, here's another from the overachieving twee group. I'd say it's a promising improvement on material from their last album, but they still have a way to go to escape the bubbly twee pigeonhole they've pigeonholed themselves into. Los Campesinos - "The Sea Is A Good Place To Think About The Future" [MP3] While You're Here: Los Campesinos! is coming to town [...]

L.A. RECORD's Chris Ziegler and Charlie Rose will be the main stage (Bates stage) closing DJs from 5 PM to 10 PM on Sunday at Sunset Junction, which is right after Fool's Gold and Tiny Masters of Today and during Mika Miko, the Sonics and Built To Spill as well as covering several unsupervised hours [...]

That annual collision of people, pavement and pop music known as Sunset Junction is upon us. The two-day street fair may very well be on its last legs — I frankly don't know what to make of all the political wrasslin' — so I vote that we just enjoy it while we can. At 20 bucks (unless you got the $15 tickets in advance), it's a good value. Bring sunscreen, mix in some water, be polite. After the jump, my very rock-ist take on the lineup (full lineup here ): Photo of the [...]

I don't think it would be going out on a limb to say that Daniel Johnston is a living legend. There are few artists that are still with us that have had the affect that Daniel Johnston has had on music today - From inspiring countless up and comers to having a documentary made about him and even having a toy in his honor , Daniel Johnston is known for the simple truths he's been writing about for nearly 30 years. On August 15th, Daniel Johnston brought those songs [...]
Daniel Johnston is weathered beyond his years, no doubt in large part to psychotic episodes suffered earlier in his life and the drugs he currently takes to combat severe bipolarity. His hands and arms shake incessantly, possibly due to what might be diabetes, and this makes it difficult for him to play even the simplest of chord progressions, which is why he occasionally requires assistance on guitar. Yet those that know him from the 1980s, or those that have seen the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston , can still see the young man that wrote songs with his [...]

I made it out to the Henry Clay People circus on Friday and Le Switch's show at Spaceland on Saturday. The Henry Clay People had a lot of guests on a lot of covers and it was great to hear a bunch of new Switch songs. This week is pretty stellar. Get off your couches.... Monday 8/17/09 [Pick of the Night] The Flaming Lips / Ghostland Observatory / Stardeath & White Dwarfs @ Greek Theatre ($44 - [...]

September 5th, 1968. Spain: Traffic jams built up in Madrid as thousands of Spaniards got out of their cars to stare at the night sky, where for sixty-five minutes a pyramid shaped object glowed. An air force jet reached a height of 9½ miles; the pilot reported the object was far above him. Radar screens showed the object to be 18 miles high. May 19th, 1957. Victoria, Australia: A large silvery object about 8 miles high [...]
