MP3: Beck - "Harry Partch" Good old Beck has released this new song, a ten minute long tribute to the avant-garde composer loved by Tom Waits and other musicians who like to bang on shit. Beck's jam uses Partch's...

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Ben Shaberman's essay collection The Vegan Monologues is more than a book about not eating animals. Sherman touches on political, social, and environmental issues while recounting his own experiences, always in his humorous yet poignant voice. In his own words, here is Ben Shaberman's Book Notes music playlist for his essay collection, The Vegan Monologues : [...]
N.A.S.A.'s "Spacious Thoughts" featuring Tom Waits & Kool Keith has got to be one of the weirdest, most awesomest and brilliant collaborations to ever go down on the record. Minds, ears and faces have been melting for months now to the audio but today we've got the wonderfully tripped out visuals to match! The video is done by Montreal's Fluorescent Hill and comes correct with the crazy oil drop / bouncing ball characters floating through a ravaged industrial cityscape terrorized by a devilish red n' black cloud trail. To learn more about how [...]
This is the latest off of N.A.S.A.'s fantastic album The Spirit of the Apollo. Like most of the songs from the album, this one meshes superstars across genres with Tom Waits gravelly voice complementing Kool Keith's matter of fact flow better than you thought was imaginable. On top of all that, the video is created [...]

Much hyped and much revered by respected acts such as Elbow and the legend that is Tom Waits, Jesca Hoop has returned to our Music Boxes with new album Hunting My Dress. Two questions beckon Was it worth the wait? and Is the hype justified? I have to answer both those questions with a big fat resounding YES!!!!! This girl has delivered big time with her own unique fusion of Experimental Rock, Psych Folk, Blues and Jazz. When listening to this it initially took me on a journey to the outer Hebrides where [...]

A little late, but I'm not complaining. Off N.A.S.A.'s The Spirit Of Apollo , out now. Hearing Tom Waits and Kool Keith on a song together is so weird, but so weirdly perfect. Pigeons and Planes

In the spring of 2005 Bob Dylan hired some new guys for his band. Nothing unusual there; Dylan tends to switch around his band every year or so. Except then, for the next four and a half years he didn't change a thing. Since that spring fans grew a little more tired of those same five people with each passing leg of the so-called Never-Endi ng Tour. Were these guys the second coming of The Band or something, fans might have been more forgiving, but soon this lowercase-"b" band turned every [...]
This won't be the first time we've sung the praises of Bill Baird--a.k.a. {{{Sunset}}}--on this blog, and this probably won't be the last.Last year, Baird released three albums under this project, making it nothing short of prolific. These twisted, home-recorded ballads and instrumentals have got guys like Tom Waits and Beck on speed dial. There are some psych pop premonitions hanging in the air,
I suppose getting Tom Waits and Kool Keith together to record a video would probably be impossible, so turning them into striped turnips who wreck shit in an animated environment was the only way to go. One thing's for certain: the videos from N.A.S.A.'s The Spirit of Apollo have been way better than their source material. [ My Old Kentucky Blog ]

To me, Tom Waits is the antithesis of The Beach Boys, and I can't stand The Beach Boys. I've been fascinated with Waits ever since stumbling upon an appearance he made on the Dinah Shore Show in the mid to late seventies, and that was one hell of an exciting stumble. I guess that's why I might envy youth, not for their age, but for having so much ahead of them, something like the discovery of Tom Waits, or Bob Dylan. I [...]
Today, Boing Boing premiered the video for the Tom Waits + Kool Keith collaboration from the N.A.S.A. project that, overall, was a bit of a letdown. The visuals in this video, which was directed by Fluorescent Hill , are not a letdown, and this is Tom Waits and Kool Keith, so, come on, right?! Read Also... [...]
