It is a busy week here at Pop Tarts Suck Toasted with us presenting not just one but two shows this week and working on a few more in the coming weeks and months so get excited!!! The first of this week's shows is the second week of Blair's residency at Pianos which I am co-presenting with the awesome Aquarium Drunkard !!! The lineup for this week's show is pretty top notch if I say so myself (I most certainly do!) with not just Blair taking over the stage [...]

On Sunday, February 7, Garth Brooks celebrates a birthday. Over the past 21 years, Brooks has sold more records than any other solo act in U.S. history, and changed the way that people think about country music. Some take Brooks to task for his wild live show, which altered the way that performers in the genre approached their performances. Some credit him for the sales boom in country music during the past two decades. In this writer's opinion, Brooks has been a credit to the business, as well as the music itself. So much gets made of how [...]
DOWNLOAD: The Organ Beats - "Happy Birthday Come On Home" (from Sleep When We Are Dead ) Last weekend, I played Damone's debut CD, From the Attic , for the first time in years and I had forgotten what a great power pop disc this was. The band played a lot of high profile shows around town (opening for Joan Jett at North Six, Ramps & Amps Festival on Randall's Island, etc.) in 2005 - 06 but then seemed to fade from view. After taking [...]

A friend of mine is off to Australia tomorrow so I figured I'd put together a shortlist of my fave Aussie artists. In no particular order, here you go: Bertie Blackman - Black Cats (Shazam Rmx) New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream (Van She Tech Rmx) Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream Cut Copy - Lights and Music Sia - Buttons Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars Ladyhawke - Paris is Burning [...]

It wasn't too long ago when I first stepped foot into the Orient Express down in SODO near the Spokane Street Bridge. I gazed upon the huge fish tanks with a childlike wonder. I roamed the tiny halls with a childlike curiosity. Then I drank shots of tequila like an old fashioned a-dult. Formerly Andy's Diner, the place is now a kitschy Chinese restaurant and lounge constructed ( most awesomely) from several old train cars and home to a myriad of banquet, bar, restaurant and, yes, karaoke rooms. In short, it's a [...]

Very excited about meeting and hosting one of the primary movers and shakers in Budapest, DJ Suhaid tomorrow at our dig Mini Müzikhol. He was visiting Istanbul and thanks to our friend Ahmet Güneş , he'll be performing a special set tomorrow. His latest sets have been the soundtrack to today and I thought I'd pass it to you guys who will not be able to enjoy him DJing tomorrow. Amazing 70's Magyar Funk & Soul, laced with rock & beat; he's Budapest's answer to our own Baris K .. A member of the local fleamarket [...]
Soooooo....... I am currently without computer due to the fact that it died the other day and killed many many important things along the way. (Not least of which was my ENTIRE digital music library (120+gb's ..... AND ITS BACKUPS!!!!). I knew that I should have seen it coming but hey, procrastination and all of that. But anyway, I've tossed a toonie in the direction of my local internet cafe guy so that I could quickly give you this brief explanation for my recent lack of online persona over the last week, as well as the one that [...]
A friend, the daring and darling Greer of up-and-coming SF band The Mallard, informed me that a talented group of gentlemen entitled Wheels of Fortune will be sauntering up to the bar in Portland, Oregon tomorrow night, and I thought you our Portland-readers need know. This is elaborate country music. Not just twang-guitar and tales of [...]

Hello hello, it's Friday Friday and man o' man another fun weekend ahead! Lots of craftin' and artsin' and cyclin' and even a little road trippin' to Cincinnatin' for a photoshoot. This time, it's Baby's turn to get in front of the lens (tech speak, sorry) and amazing photographer and model Claudia's turn to shoot! Now, I'll be there, camera(s) in tow, to shoot the shoot (did I just blow yer mind???) as 1) I want [...]

Wednesday was a cross training day, and I opted not to jog, since it always seems like it just ends up being another 2 mile run for me. I can't work to slow myself down. So, I went with the elliptical, which is my mechanical enemy. I've just never been able to get into it. But, I went for 30 minutes and actually didn't mind it too much. I thought I was going to make it 15, but I stuck it out and did OK. Thursdays are always a 2 mile run in this training, and I went [...]
"Oh, how happy we will be/ if we keep the ten commandments of love." —the Moonglows "One of a thousand pities that you can't categorize There are ten commandments of love…" —Elvis Costello, "Pidjin English "She's got the ten commandments tattooed on her arm." —MC5, "Sister Anne" Not nine. Not eleven. Ten commandments. No wonder ten-named songs are a solid lot: they are linked inextricably to [...]

Before we kick off the week: OSS finally jumped on the social networking bandwagon (about 1-4 years late, but oh well). You can now follow the jams on Twitter and Facebook . Speaking of technology, I would like to officially welcome you to Time Travel Week here on OSS. Prepare to be jostled around as we move between different points in time in a manner analogous to moving between different points in space! Last week, I had dinner [...]

I interviewed Patti Smith last week, in anticipation of her appearance next week at the Bagdad . She'll be reading from her new book, Just Kids , about her lifelong friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Here's what I wrote in this week's paper: WHEN PATTI SMITH was 20 years old, she packed up and left her New Jersey hometown for the Big Apple, leaving behind her family and a string of miserable factory jobs. When she arrived in New York, she met the boy [...]

It's pretty remarkable just how consistent moe.'s been over 20 years: in personnel, in commitment, in slow, steady growth, in that damned quirky, hard rocking way of doing things they do so well. So I posed the question to guitarist Chuck Garvey directly: How have you guys kept it together and kept from killing each other when changes, hiatuses and other issues have wreaked havoc on many of your jamband peers? [Photo by Jeremy Gordon] "That's just the way we are," Garvey said in a recent interview. "Everyone [...]

The first few weeks of this year have just flown by in a fit of aimless, new-city driving, fruitless job searching and general culinary over-indulgence (you can get anything out of a taco truck in this magical city. Anything.). A few weeks back we hit The Wiltern to see Sonic Youth. Our old pal, and newly minted avocado farmer Dan was making some flashy flashy lights for them. I am slowly learning that my tolerance for rock music is waning. This may be on a sliding scale to how much I am being paid to listen to said rock music, [...]
Nerdcore lovers and geekcrits rejoice! Last year, I introduced you to the infectious beats coming out of one terrifically-talented artist, went so far as to name her a "Bea[s]t to Watch in 2010" and continually spun all three of her available songs on a consistent basis. So when an opportunity to chat with MNDR before a show this past fall presented itself, I geared up faster than the beats she [...]
