Every weekday at 1 PM listen up for the Philly Local Pick of the Day, an especially rockin' sample track from the plethora of hot new tunes Philadelphia has to offer.____________Pick of the Day 11/9/09:"When I Tripped Into You"by Toy SoldiersToy Soldiers! This nine member band is today's Philly Local Pick. Their track "When I Tripped Into You" comes off their first album, Whisper Down the Lane.

Cover art by Kate Egan (eganart.blogspot.com) In 2007, two friends sat in their basement in South Philly and started recording some very wonderful and crude joke songs in the style of Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. Through coincidence and the hand of God they began playing out as Toy Soldiers , and in about a year's time, got serious enough to get themselves (by then a trio) into the studio at The Fire in Fishtown. But, when it came to the making of this record, bandleader Ron Gallo knew he was ready for a bigger sound. So he [...]
Every weekday at 1 PM listen up for the Philly Local Pick of the Day, ____________Pick of the Day 10/26/09:""by Toy SoldiersToy Soldiers started out as a joke band, septupled in size in about one day in the recent part of it's life, loves a good ol' sense of community, and thinks you oughta milk happiness like a cow. They are moving forward and enjoying themselves performing. They have a show on
As Hall & Oates say, it's another fall in Philadelphia. And with it, there's a handful of terrific new releases from some of our favorite local bands coming out. The hottness factor is high these days in the Illadelph. If you haven't noticed somebody needs to call 911 cause there's a music fire burning on this dance floor. Here's a short list of some upcoming Philly Fall Essential new releases. Toy Soldiers are fronted by singer/songwriter Ron Gallo. This upwards to 12 piece gang have made a fine do it yourself [...]

Photos by C. Marcoux The Toy Soldiers know how to win over their audience: great live performance, and strong lead vocals! Band leader Ron Gallo is in his early twenties, and already making a name for himself around town, singing his heart out along with his 7-piece backing band, The Toy Soldiers. He takes inspiration from the likes of Dylan and Guthrie (of the Woody persuasion) and hopes to someday make it out for the Midnight Ramble with Levon Helm, where we're sure he would fit right in! Watch out for their debut [...]

With the busy, hectic lives we lead, I've learned to totally appreciate traffic. Yep, that may sound crazy, but with all my dashing around from place to place, all the Ripple business in the works, all the rushing, traffic offers me an opportunity (forced opportunity) to slow down, take my foot off the gas (literally) and just chill. Turns out that time in my car is also my best time for listening to music. With the world shut out and my cellphone comfortably out of reach, I can insulate myself in my mobile man cave and spin [...]
We awake one morning to find a bird waiting in the bathroom, it arrived in the night and patiently perched plumping plumbing pipes, we we're ripe for the planting pouring hot rain, little birdy says it all the time, a whisper in my ear about the cyclone brewing and we're out the door sending rejections left and right, their objections obtain kernels of truth but then, we're just two American spending some vacation time in Hanoi. Only got two weeks every year for that. Instead, her and I opt for a flight aboard an ancient automobile, a hundred-passenger [...]

Yes, folks, it's that time again. Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices want more of your time, money, and approval. Considering it is "that time" quite often, it's no real surprise. However, this doesn't mean it isn't as frustrating and mind boggling as usual. Nevertheless, Pollard and the gang are readying another collection of b-sides and scraps, the third in the Suitcase series. Suitecase 3: Up We Go Now is planned for release on November 3rd via Guided By Voices Inc. Now let's not go any further without [...]
It's not enough that Guided by Voices churned out twenty-song albums every other year, and that Robert Pollard released solo albums in the meantime. No, there are always more songs, and Guided by Voices fans are happy to get them. So in 2000, if only to prove that he wrote so many songs that some of them must have come out accidentally, Robert Pollard released Suitcase: Failed Experiments and Trashed Aircraft , a four-disc set of demos and outtakes. Suitcase 2 came out in 2005, and now Pitchfork reports that there will be [...]
Ghostbird is a new rock band from San Diego. Their genres of choice on MySpace are 2-step, Dutch pop and glam, none of which seem fitting for a new SoCal indie rock band, but those descriptions are, in fact, fairly accurate. The drum beat is a bit unusual, which is what 2-step is known for, and their style does have a touch of glam. Dutch pop, like Scandinavian pop, has a rustic, enchanting feel to it, as does Ghostbird. The Ghostbird EP begins with "Toy Soldier", an indie pop tune that reminisces upon a time [...]

As if the regular two-day lineup wasn't enough, geeeezus. Per the usual custom, the Cha Cha, the Comet Tavern, and Chop Suey will all be hosting shows during and after the proper festival this weekend. Chop Suey's Mad Rad/Macklemore show on Saturday is only 3 bucks with a Block Party wristband. Not sure what either of the other two joints will be charging, if anything. . I'll have a tough time making it to many of these, but the Cha Cha's Saturday night schedule is super [...]

Philly's latest entry into big-band hipsteristic indie rock is Toy Soldiers a nine (and maybe sometimes 10 or 11) piece band fronted by Ron Gallo. The band recently finished recording their first album called Whisper Down The Lane. It's a righteous collection of rootsy, jangly, scraggly, soulful indie inspired songs that bring to mind Shangri-La era Kinks, Nashville Skyline-era Dylan, Bright Eyes and the Black Keys, The Coasters and Carl Perkins. Rock it. Myself Repeated - Toy Soldiers

I say this all the time but, I feel so great being from Minnesota because Minneapolis is a mad music machine that keeps churning out great homeland talent. Toki Wright is a perfectly prime example of what I previously stated. I've seen Toki at just about every Hip-Hop event I've ever been to in Minneapolis, so for that reason alone he will always be a pivotal stamp in Twin Cities Hip-Hop. I got the chance to see Toki at this year's Soundset, and I was very impressed when I saw him perform his solo material. His new album, [...]

Ghostbird is an indie rock duo comprised of Trent Hancock (guitar/vocals) and Mike Cooper (Drums) who just released their debut self-titled EP . I recently had the pleasure of being introduced to the group and have enjoyed working my way through the album's six songs, simple, melodic pop tunes that are catchy and emotionally charged. Though the band's sound often has a familiar tinge to it, the boys show some genuine talent and manage to craft a unique enough spin on classic indie pop to make their music very much worth your time. Hancock and guest [...]

Remember that awesome Regina Spektor music video from when she was a nobody? It had a stream of toy soldiers pouring out of her mouth, she played a misfit piano with oversize keys, the color palette was subtle yet playful, and paper cutouts of uniformed men, some with a pig head, were animated to climb up poles and kick each other's hats off their heads; most of all, it had Regina winking at you when you least expected it, looking like a hot music teacher in a pilot-y outfit, seducing you with her Mozart. [...]

With soul bearing revelations like "Mockingbird" and "Like Toy Soldiers," 2004's Encore marked a personal triumph for the psyche of Marshall Mathers, yet the bulk of the album's frivolous material resulted in the common recognition as being Eminem's most forgettable work to date. To make matters worse, his health spiraled downward after the tragic shooting of D12 member and best friend DeShaun "Proof" Holton and chronically abusing pain medications. After a nearly-five year hiatus which seemed like an eternity to most fans, Slim Shady steps back on his high horse to break the circle of uncertainly with the [...]
