The following is a four part 8+ series based upon songs from the film 'Children of Men', the film itself, and the writing of Jorge Luis Borges. All of the songs featured here are originally from the 'Children of Men' soundtrack. This series was originally published sequentially over a four week period and has been collected here to allow you to read the entire story in one place, in order. "Fragments of a Prayer" by John Tavener & [...]

No Harm Done was a band from Deltona, Florida that played its last show on August 19th, 2009. It's too bad because their third (and final) album Escape was released in 2008 and is full of some awesome hardcore pop punk hybrid that reminds me a little of (maybe) Set Your Goals. Others might say it sounds like MXPX meets Strike Anywhere, or maybe something like a way way better version of Autopilot Off. More pop punk than hardcore, Escape is filled with woah's and propelling fast-paced rhythms and is as catchy as [...]
LOST LOST LOST LOST LOST LOST LOST it's LOST DAY!!!! I am SO useless today. If you're as useless as I am, go ahead and check out last night's show, in which I celebrated tonight's premiere of season six of LOST by playing the Lost Season Six Mix I posted yesterday in its entirety, mixed with tunes that appeared on the show and bits of the score. Do it up: Stream the February 1 edition of Out the Other And here comes the playlist. Also, a [...]
King Tut's is one of those venues that – whether or not you've ever been to Glasgow – you should probably know. True, it's smaller than an average school hall and doesn't even have a back stage area, but it also has its own branded beer (at only £2.75 a pint, too) and has hosted a truly preposterous number of major musical names. Just this coming month they're expecting Beach House, Fionn Regan, The Undertones and Spoon, all of whom will almost certainly proclaim their deep love of the venue and spend hours after their sets signing autographs and [...]
Time for my belated and bloated annual look back at the past year... yes, we're mere hours away from February, but I started a dangerous precedent last year when I posted my year-end review at the end of January. Last year saw a dramatic drop in my post count, less than half the posts of 2008 and my lowest total since 2006. I partially blame the lingering effect of that blogger crackdown, but another contributing factor is the new job I started around the same time in late '08. Now I'm more or less happy with one [...]

Everyone keeps saying it, but it's official, the 90's are back in all their lo-fi glory. No band is more of a figurehead for this resurgence, than San Francisco's GIRLS who took the stage Monday night at Orange County's Detroit Bar. Christopher Owens and JR White took the packed crowd back about 15 years for an evening of jangly grunge pop; heavy on the melancholy, but beautiful nonetheless. Children of God (Owen was raised in the cult) references [...]

[While sending out birthday wishes to Sam Phillips this morning, I'll also tip you to her new subscription-based music and art project, Long Play , and to the fact that she's guest-editing Magnetmagazine.com this week. ... Now, on with tonight's shows:] The Key Club is back in business, although not with a full schedule. I missed Go Betty Go's farewell show there last week, but this week the Sunset Strip club kicks into high gear. Tonight, Grammy-nominated Mos Def headlines [...]

Ireland's very own Shit Robot (Marcus Lambkin) is currently downunder for his first Australian tour. Signed to DFA , Marcus has brought our three 123 releases: "Wrong Galaxy" (2006), "Chasm" (2007) and just recently "Simple Things (Work It Out)" (2009), and has remixed artists like Simian Mobile Disco, Dondolo, The Juan MacLean, etc. I'm a bit late on this post (as he has already played a few places already) but Melbournians/Perth kids can catch him this weekend. If you are in Melbourne, definitely come along this Saturday to our good blog friend's, Scatterblog's, [...]

Having caused quite the stir with their 'Vivarium' mini-album and subsequent singles "You're Turning Into John Wayne" and "What Is Light? Where Is Laughter?" , Glaswegian quartet Twin Atlantic are set to release new single "Lightspeed" on Monday 1st March, 2010. Watch the video for "Lightspeed", shot in the Salton Sea in the California desert: The track itself, according to frontman Sam McTrusty , is "about unity and self belief but also [...]

Sea Lion, the name of the latest album from The Ruby Suns is inspired by a sea lion colony visible from Hwy 1, south of San Francisco. I figured this was a neat little tid-bit of information considering the band is based out of New Zealand. Recorded by Ryan McPhun alone in his Auckland basement and sung entirely in Maori, Sea Lion is not another psychedelic indie pop album. This is meant to pay tribute and teach those listening to the record how to embody one's surroundings. The album is an exotic and experiential romp [...]

Amazulu - Moonlight Romance Amazulu - Montego Bay You feel like a new era with a fresh and positive life with a clean slate ready to start. Life is struggle in the past, and if your 'ship finally to have come from hope'. However, it is some time away before there is a beautiful place to travel and tourism can break again. However, the routine must feel the ground is not cold in the frigid winter. Many sights and smells of a tropical island, and bathed in the warmth of [...]

My family didn't have many traditions. When I was a child we had family dinners and lit Jew candles on Friday nights. Other than that, we didn't do much together. Holiday dinners, I guess, were about as normal as we could be. But there was one tradition that I always enjoyed, and I am trying to continue as I age. In short, it is watching the annual New Year's Twilight Zone television marathon. In New Jersey, New Years' day is usually really, really cold. From an early age, my father, sister, and sometimes my mother, would [...]

I realize this is a week late - I apologize. It wasn't just to build suspense; I suppose I decided to get a bit of actual relaxation in when I finally started my holidays four days ago. At any rate, let's dip into what autumn brought for albums. September gave us releases from Sondre Lerche, frYars, The Cribs, The Big Pink, Dragonette, Boys Noize, Yo La Tengo, Noah and the Whale, Sliimy, David Sylvian, Jamie T, The Voluntary Butler Scheme, and surprisingly, Prefab Sprout. Wild Beasts broke through with their sophomore album (being contrary, I thought it wasn't as good [...]
Twenty or so British bloggers contributed to this list of their favourite British albums of the decade. I asked them to rank their top three albums and have listed the Top 10 (unfortuntely, the MySpace throwback of a Top 8 was scuppered). I attributed ten points to their #1 choices, seven points to their #2 choices and four points to their #3 choices. This slightly bizarre scoring system was conconcted to emphasise albums which may have received multiple votes, considering the small sample size. Massive thanks to everyone who took part - Tim at The Daily [...]

Well, I guess it's my turn. Kasey and RSV have already dropped their faves of the year ( here and here ) on y'all, so there's just no avoiding it for me now. This year was particularly difficult due to the sheer amount of great music that came out, and had I made this list tomorrow it would certainly change. That said, you can edit forever but eventually you have to settle on something and call it your list. So, with out further ado I am gonna steal RSV's formatting and get this show on the road: [...]
