Surfer Blood 's debut album, Astro Coast is more than just a bunch of songs built around one crafty single. Looking at just the single though, "Swim (To Reach The End)" marks an explosive entry on to the indie music scene. This new music video only helps their case, including dreams-turned-reality and even a little bit of old man-bashing. "Swim" takes on many different meanings depending on where it's presented. At first listen the song draws you in with its literal imagery, frantically swimming to outrace an underwater predator maybe. Looking at [...]

Here we are at the end of January and there are great shows to entice you out of your cozy homes to brave the cold. On Thursday, Great Scotts has Retribution Gospel Choir (with members of Low) and the Gobshites are back again at the Burren for some good Irish drinking songs (I went last week and it was a good time). Florida's Surfer Blood has announced a bunch of tour dates throughout the US in support of their recently released Astro Coast (which is only $5.99 at Amazon MP3 ), including a stop at SXSW and a stop right before that here in Dallas at the Granada. They have been getting a lot of buzz off this new one and I have to say from what I've heard so far I can see why. They also have a new video for "Swim" up on Pitchfork.tv (shown above). Check out the full [...]
We are frequently smitten with the bands that we feature in our "Taking Off The Shrinkwrap". Alas, not all bands can make it past the "one-hit wonder" tag and they leave us, heartbroken and laying in the gutter weeping softly. And then there's Surfer Blood. When we featured them a few months ago, we had high hopes. After listening to their amazing first album "Astrocoast", those warm, fuzzy feelings that we once had, has turned to outright lust. Vocalist/Guitarist JP Pitts took a few moments to indulge our fantasies last week... [...]

What a day for Surfer Blood , huh? It's amazing how quickly a "blog buzz band" can transform into a "Pitchfork buzz band," all with a two digit number and a three word title of commendation. They really deserve every byte of respect and love they've picked up all over the Internet and abroad. If you're still on the fence, the video below should demonstrate their live energy and collaborative skills. Here's "Swim" from the so-hot-right-now Astro Coast LP, as performed on AOL/Spinner's Interface: [MP3] [...]

Lots of music so let's get to it! On Thursday, The Gobshites are doing their third night of their January residency at the Burren. There's a benefit for the victims of the Haiti earthquake at the Middle East Downstairs featuring: The Gobshites, Force the Fallen, Forgetful Jones, The Doom Buggies, Sherman Burns and Van Burens (rockin' for a good cause is a good thing). There's a cool show at Precinct with Corin Ashley, Mike Gent [...]

Time to revive an old FOA feature: Linkage Wednesday! 1. Surfer Blood - "Take It Easy" Take It Easy - Surfer Blood I know everybody's tired of stuff that sounds like the '80s...or calypso...or the Beach Boys...but this song sounds like all of that and it's awesome. Surfer Blood will be visiting the Drunken Unicorn Feb. 19 with Turbo Fruits, Carnivores and Holiday Shores. 2. Being that I spent all of last week trying to say [...]

Right about now, just when the season is setting in, is when I'm pretty much done with winter. The novelty wears off quick after the holidays, leaving behind a stretch of cold days resigned to indoor activities. Luckily, we can listen to new music indoors, and even more luckily, the Palm Beach-based quartet Surfer Blood is serving up some very balmy power-pop on their much-anticipated debut album Astro Coast , due out January 19th. If The Killers and Vampire Weekend had a baby and taught it to swim, it might emerge sounding like the track [...]
