For the past 18 months Peggy Sue have been happily and successfully booking their own sell-out shows, writing and recording their own records: a collection of sought-after, but sold-out, EPs and building a fanbase the envy of their contemporaries. Through old-fashioned hard work and by embracing new technology Peggy Sue had unintentionally pioneered a new business model in a now fractured music industry. The band were not looking for a traditional record deal but having seen their sold out ICA show in November 2009, Wichita Recordings stepped in [...]
Two Gallants - The Throes: Mildly disappointing follow-up nc

I'm not so smug as to think that I can pin-point the albums that will, in retrospect, stand out the most from the 2000s. Nor would it be accurate to argue that the albums that affected me the most on a personal level were "the best." But if I were to completely take the personal part out of my own list, you might as well just read anyone's list. There has to be an aspect of me in my list. So, these are neither the most personal albums nor the albums that I [...]

Before we get to the Top 100 Albums of the Aughties, it may be useful for you to consult this hastily made Venn diagram designed with the aid of MS Paint: In it you'll see that there were three criteria considered in selecting I Rock Cleveland's Top 100 Albums of the Aughties used in combination with the one implied characteristic all of these albums shared, namely they were released some time between the years of 2000 and 2009. First, the album had to come from a [...]

Inevitably, as another musical year dawns, we begin to move from the favourites that kept us company the previous 364 days and speculate at which bands might fuel our fire during the next 12 months. Number two lands closer to my current home, in the form of Brooklyn's (via Kansas) We Are Country Mice . [...]

What's going on in SF tonight?

What is with all the NSFW videos lately? Rammstein , I understood as their song was actually called "Pussy" and the site required you to confirm you were of age because, well, the video had lots of nudity and featured the band nailing porn stars. Massive Attack used an old porn star and what she called her "fuck film" to off-set the haunting lyrics in their "Paradise Circus" clip. After that I was unsure if bands really should just re-purpose material from old skin flicks in their videos. Hell, [...]

In their first local show since performing at our Regional Bias event , Adam Stephens and his band The Finite Plain take the stage at the Rickshaw Stop next Wednesday. The Two Gallants singer-songwriter headed down to LA in the Fall to begin recording with producer Joe Chiccarelli (My Morning Jacket, The Shins, White Stripes). His debut solo album's nearly done and should see release in 2010. Also playing Wednesday are Two Sheds (SF/Sacramento) and local act Honey . (8pm, [...]

[Buzz Bands LA today welcomes a contribution from Richard Cromelin, former pop music writer for the Los Angeles Times, who weighs in on the new "All Tomorrow's Parties" documentary:] By Richard Cromelin Los Angeles fringe-rock followers might be forgiven if they have mixed feelings about "All Tomorrow's Parties," a documentary DVD marking the 10 th anniversary of the patriarch of non-mainstream music festivals. The film offers glimpses of some great performances and offstage antics, but [...]

Peggy Sue at Lit Lounge (10/23/09) Photo : Jon Klemm Well, I'm finally getting around to posting some more CMJ pics, so here's a set from Peggy Sue to coincide with the release of their new 73/digital single "Yo Mama" which came out yesterday ( Nov 16 ) on the UK's Chess Club Records . It's the first single from their forthcoming album entitled Fossils and Other Phantoms which is coming out in early 2010 on Yep Roc . The new album [...]
When he was growing up, John Vanderslice wanted to be an English teacher. He pictured himself encouraging students to learn about the writers he loved while growing up– such as his heroes, Samuel Beckett, Saul Bellow and Anthony Burgess – and helping them delve into the fascinating world of literature as he had done. But things didn't turn out quite how he expected. Literature may have found him, but so did music, and music's grasp proved the tighter of the two- so now he's a full time musician, and teaches himself about the joys of the English language. [...]
so here I am contributing to the Albums of the Decade Blog Tour ... Brought to you by: DECKFIGHT ! This was kind of a difficult list for me put together. Usually I am pretty opinionated about my taste and what albums I love, but it's a little difficult to put a list together of ONLY 10 albums that I have loved over the last 10 years. Just to give you an idea, I went through my Itunes, picking and choosing, and I originally came up with 23 albums. Damn I [...]
Patrick Boissel, Alive Records Interview by Will Bray Blues is a continuous growing genre. It always has been and always will be. What the exact reason for this universal obsession which started as nothing more than cotton field folk music, no one can really tell you. Maybe because of it's natural sound, maybe because blues is so personal, maybe because it welcomes influence and maybe because blues tells great stories. More than likely it's because of all of those. Blues has been passed from father to son for generations and each time gathering momentum. Now taken [...]

It's no secret that we've been digging on Port O'Brien's latest, Threadbare , so we were pretty amped up for their show this weekend at Union Hall. Suffice it to say, we were not disappointed. The band, sporting a brand new SF-heavyweights lineup, delivered a show that was packed with energy, delved skillfully into the new material, and most importantly left the audience begging for more. In short: totally killer. The show, as is often the case with the band, started out on the mellow [...]

Quel cd erano i Kill it Kid. E' un caso anche che i Kill it Kid abbiano fatto da cavie in una sorta di Big Brother accademico tenuto all'università [...]
Clem Snide – Hungry Bird. Download "Me No" (mp3). This album was originally recorded in 2006. As the story goes, the band broke up after writing and recording it. But Eef Barzelay, after releasing two solo albums, has re-formed the band and finally allowed this hidden gem to be unleashed. Barzelay's voice has a tonal quality reminiscent of John Darnielle but the music is full of lush and beautiful arrangements. The songs are fairly candid, but with a hint of convolution. Thank God the album was finally released from the shelf! M. Ward – Hold Time. Download "Never Had Nobody [...]
