How can I justify myself giving a "review" on B.B. King . I can't, so here are the thoughts that rushed into my head during this incredible show. I'll be brief.
Firstly, B.B. King is 84. Unfortunately, he won't be playing forever. If you have not seen him and his band play, or are not planning to at some point, you have lost out.
On to the show. The first thing that came to mind when the band was setting up the stage was that these fine gentlemen control the stage [...]

I know some purist will make a stink and say this album came out last year. But it was remastered and the songs were reordered, so in some ways the 2009 version is a different album. If I had to number this favorite albums list, this album would be number one or two for 2009. Listen: The Low Anthem ∞ Charlie Darwin Week One: The Two Man Gentlemen Band Week Two: David Rawlings Machine Week Three: Pink Martini

Television stars have sometimes had an easier path to success on the charts than other performers. Several have parlayed their success on the tube to a hit on the record. However, few have done it as successful, or been as serious about their craft as John Schneider . The star of the CBS classic The Dukes Of Hazzard also placed 11 top ten songs on the country charts from 1981-1987. In 1987, the sky was seemingly the limit for the New York-born singer. He had just won the "Star Of Tomorrow" award from Music [...]

Plain and simple, one of my top three bands. Love everything they do. If you don't know them , you should give them a try. Listen: Pink Martini ∞ Splendor In The Grass Week One: The Two Man Gentlemen Band Week Two: David Rawlings Machine

THE BEST COMICS OF THE DECADE: Part Three: 2004 Today, a whole post dedicated to one year. 2004 began the current comic book renaissance (which blossomed fully in 2005), and it takes an entire post just to cover this one year. And most of the reason was Marvel. Let's get started. Superman/Batman #1-6 Jeph [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Finch is the third book in Jeff VanderMeer's Ambergris Cycle, and also the third book in the series to inspire its own soundtrack (by Murder By Death ). With Finch , Jeff VanderMeer has created a richly populated world with speculative fiction imbibed with impressive detective noir storytelling. Paul Tremblay wrote of the book: "Told in a [...]

I have some reservations about putting this album on my list, especially considering I haven't actually heard it yet. BUT I did see David (and the rest of the Big Surprise Tour) live back in August. He played most of the songs below. And the musicians featured on the album are the same as the record. So I can say without any doubt once I hear it, it will be one of my favorites. Tracklist 1. Ruby 2. To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High) 3. I Hear Them All 4. Method Acting / [...]

Between a tour of Australia , playing curators at All Tomorrow's Parties , headlining Primavera Sound , and a four-night stint in New York City , Pavement 's 2010 reunion is already on the realm of being an extravaganza. But as Consequence of Sound can exclusively reveal, fans of Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, Scott Kannberg, Steve West, and Mark Ibold haven't seen anything yet. For the legendary outfit, which will be reuniting some 10 years after that final 1999 performance at London's Brixton Academy, 2010 will include dates across the [...]

After a summer of hard work, the payoff is here: Flawless Hustle proudly presents Money Isn't Real , our first compilation. If there's one topic that's a constant in Hip-Hop is money. Whether heads are making it, spending it or stealing it, the scene (and our world) is obsessed with money. Hell, one of the reasons people hustle is to get loot, so we ourselves know the power of a dollar, which got us thinking: what the fuck is money, really? It's an interesting concept, and was a great jumping off point for this debut project, so [...]

We're all guilty of overdressing to events just to be seen. Concerts are no exception. Everyone has that friend that takes forever, and likewise, that friend who goes to every concert in the same ratty Soundgarden shirt from 1994. In our years of performing and attending shows, we've seen our fair share of concert fashion, and the major thing we've noticed is the differences between the ways men and women get ready for the show. Of course there are always those people who just don't give a shit, but they're no fun. This isn't meant to be sexist or anything, [...]
My first listen of the Pains of Being Pure at Heart live was a little over four months ago. From a precarious balcony view, high above a packed crowd at the Nottingham-Trent Uni main room (one of several venues for the English city's Dot to Dot Festival), I could make out several figures onstage. I could hear the great music and I watched as the people on the floor cheered loudly for the band: swaying to the music and clearly enjoying themselves. So I promised myself that sometime soon I'd see them [...]

The Damned came together through a pool of musicians that had all been in previous bands in some shape or form. Three of the band members that would be in the original line up of The Damned first played in a group that never played outside of band practices. Masters of the Backside featured Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns), Rat Scabies (Chris Millar), Dave Vanian (David Letts), and Chrissie Hynde. The band who was being managed by future Sex Pistols band manager Malcolm Mclaren, broke up due to management related issues. Chrissie Hynde would go on to form The Pretenders, while [...]

Louise is a classy girl. Never one to pass out on a walkway next to some garbage bins. Not Louise. Nope. Never. In my never-ending quest to interview everyone I know (poorly, I might add), today I sat down with one Louise C. to talk about life, love, alcohol, and television programs. She's been asking me to interview her for a few months, so after a power-breakfast at Patra Burger I decided I'd let her stew for long enough. She was quite receptive to my advances when I asked if she would like to be interviewed, [...]

Typically, in our regularly recurring Covered in Folk feature, we enumerate the impact a particular artist has had on culture, and follow that with a carefully compiled list of folk covers from that artists' songbook. Tonight, we break the mold, turning to the songs made famous by Elvis in order to tout a few artists whose new and recent releases or rediscovered gems have been at the top of my playlist for the last few weeks for one reason or another. One day, perhaps, we'll feature a more traditional look at [...]
Even at the age of 65, there is something quintessentially mod-like about 'Irish' Jack Lyons. Given the, none too original, nickname by The Who's manager Kit Lambert, Jack first met the band in 1962 when they were still known as The Detours (playing a bunch of wedding dates in a half filled work diary), and he's been around ever since: pontificating on the attitude of Mod, eulogizing his Shepherd's Bush heroes, and sometimes eloquently tripping over backstage cable. He's in Dublin this Friday night for a late night show at the Academy, when he'll be regaling the audience with his [...]

If you don't like the blues and ain't too particular about R&B in general, you might as well skip this whole mixtape. Period. End of story. Last week when we dropped Etta singing jazz, I knew we couldn't get away with not including some of her classic R&B material, of which there is, as we say here in the fertile crescent, "beaucoup," meaning a healthy bunch, a whole lot! So the first part of the mixtape is comprised of [...]
