Onetime BTW Under Byen's fourth album Alt Er Tabt ("All Is Lost") is out in April. The Denmark group's followup to 2006's Samme Stof Som Stof definitely has an anguished, although not done-for feel. In their new form, they're without pianist Nils Gröndahl and their one-time orchestra , which makes things immediately sparer, like the whispered warping and unfurling bedroom-folk abstractions of Islaja or Lau Nau. See, for instance, the collection's quietly swarming title track. In a translated statement about its video, director (and visual artist) Sidse Carstens says she's commenting [...]

The Control Group Sadness is Sarah Assbring's stock in trade, a point I've rather drilled home in my reviews of her output as El Perro Del Mar - the 2007 self-title and 2008's From The Valley To The Stars . While both records were beautiful in their downbeat demeanor, you couldn't help but hope that Assbring would find a way to cheer up, if only for her own emotional well-being. Unfortunately for Assbring - but fortunately for her listeners - delectable heartache [...]

Lcd Soundsystem are back on business and a new album is expected this year. Here is a first clip with frontman James Murphy. Watch | Clip 1 Os Gêmeos (Portuguese for "The Twins") are identical twin brothers from São Paulo, Brazil. They started painting graffiti in 1987 and gradually became a major influence in the local scene, helping to define Brazil's own style. Stylistically, Os Gêmeos are heavily influenced by the cryptic art of the São Paulo–based pixação graffiti [...]
DENMARK'S UNDER BYEN ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF FOURTH ALBUM, ALT ER TABT "A heavy-riff boom that sounds like Sigur Ros' idea of Black Sabbath...the lyrics are in Danish, but this full-moon magic needs no translation." - David Fricke, Rolling Stone "Gorgeous and sweeping...well crafted, well balanced, and well worth zoning out to." - SPIN "Under Byen's great with eerie beauty...chilling and catchy at once. 7.7/103 - Pitchfork "The interplay, the spaces left out by one instrument, into which another player would insert a sound, seemed carefully arranged, and this sort of socket approach [...]
. And after more than three years of letting that dark ...

Having my recent rant (which hardly was a rant, but rather a quick comment) against cover versions in mind, one could understandably question my decision to post the following track. But trying to defend myself, I believe my complaint was against bands recording cover versions trying to help promoting their own music. Like when you receive a promo mail and the first thing mentioned is that "we recorded a cover of" (insert whatever) and then "oh by the way! We've recorded some of our own songs as well". Can't help it, but those mails are deleted immediately. So [...]
To celebrate its seventh birthday, Paper Bag Records has combined two of our favorite things in music: covers and free stuff. The Seven Year Itch, as Stereogum reports, is a new compilation of cover songs performed by twelve of label's artists, and can be obtained right this very second for free. Just click here . Launched in 2002, Paper Bag Records has emerged as one of he premier indie labels, and for good reason. In its first year, the label released the critically acclaimed You Forgot It In People [...]

Two of the best shows MOKB Presents has ever hosted have involved Paper Bag Records bands. Woodhands , of course, brings the crowd and the party every time we bring them back to Indianapolis, but the most criminally underattended show we've ever hosted was for The Acorn . Of course all this was before Kanye West proclaimed their greatness on his blog . Paper Bag is now releasing a [...]

In 2002, Toronto's Paper Bag Records had an auspicious first year by releasing a new millennial indie rock touchstone in Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People , one of the decade's most acclaimed albums, and one that helped shape thoughts and expectations of what indie rock could look and sound like in the '00s: sentimental and anthemic but still rooted in the raucous guitar rock of the '90s, all while featuring more members than an intramural softball team. Years later, the label still earns plaudits for curating a solid roster -- most recently given [...]
Under Byen have cancelled all upcoming live engagements to concentrate on finishing their fourth album, due out February 8 via A:larm Music.
Swedish/Danish electronic/jazz/experimental trio Nuaia will release their self-titled debut album on October 26 and are previewing a number of tracks at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/nuaia RIYL Midaircondo , Under Byen , or maybe Stina Nordenstam . Well worth checking out.
First time I saw Our Broken Garden was last year at EuroSonic in Groningen in a very intimate venue. I admit that I was absolutely stunned by Anna Brønsted 's melancholic voice. Later on I learned that she is a touring member of Efterklang , but most importantly that her music inspired the same reactions in ex- Cocteau Twins member Simon Raymonde , who currently runs Bella Union (home to greats such as Fleet Foxes , Explosions In The Sky , The Dears and Midlake ) and who immediately [...]
