[these amazing photos were taken for nyctaper by Kate Ehle -- many more here ] The Chicago psychedelic garage-rock quartet Unicycle Loves You opened the NYCTaper CMJ show last Thursday at Bruar Falls in the middle of the afternoon. The band attracted a crowd of fans and friends and displayed during their too-brief twenty-minute set why they were booked for CMJ, completely independently, by nyctaper and Jonny Leather for the same day. That evening they performed at Union Hall as part Jonny's show. The Bruar Falls [...]

So, I finally got out to see some shows last night, and while I got home way too late, it was a pretty productive evening on the whole. I started out* my CMJ at the M for Montreal showcase at Arlene's Grocery where I took in BEAST, Think About Life, and Malajube. During We Are Wolves set, I snuck over to the Mercury to catch the charming Mumford and Sons. After Malajube went off, I headed over to Cake Shop to catch CMJ buzz band, Surfer Blood and then I capped off the night at Living Room with a couple [...]

Recommended Show: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2009 SADDLE CREEK SHOWCASE @ KNITTING FACTORY 361 Metropolitan Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11211 $12, 7PM Another night of great shows happens tonight all over the City. The choice isn't quite as obvious as last night, but Saddle Creek's showcase at the Knitting Factory is sure to be a crowd pleasure (if you want to venture off the beaten Manhattan path into Brooklyn). Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Orenda Fink, Old Canes, UUVVWWZ, Beep Beep and guest Suzannah Johannes are all on the bill there tonight. Check out a list of other shows [...]
You don't have to be at CMJ to be in the know about the upcoming buzzworthy bands. Sure CMJ is a pretty epic display of developing to antique artists showcasing themselves to the music industry and like-type folks in New York City for about 5 straight days of non-stop back-to-back shows. It is undeniably a really fun time, a drunken time, a time for networking over a cheers and a time to collect as many business cards as you can to impress your co-workers. Anyway, I am sad to say that this year I am [...]

I am upstairs at Pianos watching the Greycoats to start. They are a jangle-pop band from Minneapolis, under the same umbrella as our old friend Jeremy Messersmith. The guys are also completely without attitude and have the wonderfully fresh midwest charm. A definite see-again band, they are playing a few more shows this week, including a night time showcase at Spike Hill tonight at 10 pm. Greycoats go on directly before Unicycle Loves You, who are also playing the NYCTaper CMJ Show on Thursday. ...more to come...

Recommended Show: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2009 CLIPSE @ HIRO BALLROOM 363 West 16th Street Manhattan, NY 10011 RSVP , 9PM I'm sure my listing for events over the next few days will be a little lacking. Mainly because there's a lot going on, but also because I'm trying to keep the listings manageable. Hopefully, I will catch wind of the day shows to properly tip you off, and I will split them off in two sections below (day and night). I'm hoping to make sure you get to know all the great day shows! [...]

DON'T MISS ARMY NAVY AT THIS YEAR'S CMJ MUSIC MARATHON! LA's Army Navy released their self-titled debut album on their own label, The Fever Zone, in late 2008, an album that NPR described as "a Posies-and Teenage Fanclub-style tsunami of melody and distortion that underscores the youthful essence of power-pop in all its bittersweet glory" and Pitchfork declared a "bubbly effervescent valentine." After an appearance on last year's famed "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" soundtrack and a 73 release on Fierce Panda's Fandango Records in the UK, the band is currently taking some time writing and recording material [...]

Thanks to our friends at BandsInTown , we now have a really excellent poster for our CMJ '09 Day Party at Bruar Falls. The details again: The NYCTaper 2009 CMJ Day Party will take place at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn on Thursday October 22 beginning at 12 noon (doors). Bruar Falls is the relatively new venue opened by the Cake Shop people earlier this year. Its located at 245 Grand Street in Williamsburg, a five-minute walk from the Bedford stop of the L Train [ [...]
Sorry for the relative silence around these parts the last few days. I'm still settling into my new Chicago digs, though thankfully I'm just about done unpacking. That means you can expect all kinds of low-quality blogging coming your way later this week. Until then, here's what is going on around Chicago this week. My picks are in bold . If I've missed anything, feel free to add it in the comments! Oh, and I beg you... someone out there has to go see Cattle Decapitation at Bottom Lounge [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
Unicycle Loves You is an eclectic psychedelic pop band from Chicago. Their self-titled debut on Highwheel Records gained the band quite a bit of buzz and resulted in gigs opening for the likes of Fiery Furnaces , Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Awesome Color . This week Unicycle Loves You was awarded Venus Zine's Band of The Month with a neat cover story and band bio. We are extremely happy to have Unicycle Loves You as the opening band for the NYCTaper 2009 CMJ [...]

I'm a huge Big Brother fan and while I do call it a guilty pleasure, the truth of the matter is that it's not another regular TV show. The show for me has more to do with the fact that there are 24/7 live feeds making it the most authetic or "real" reality show in television. Anyway, as with every summer I've had a good time and it's nice to hear that the show is putting on record ratings. The show probably will keep going strong for a lot more seasons. As for tonight with the [...]
