In a very short time it seems that Owl City has polarized the masses. Half of you are all about his lovey-dovey, auto-tuned pop songs and half of you could do without. And, surprise! Buzzgrinder's got some of both. So you can duke it out in the comments if you want. That's half the reason I took the energy to get this interview. I know, I love you guys so much. So read on if you would like to see what Mr. Adam Young thinks of ambient music and Gerard Way vs. [...]

Photo: Jeremy Charles As we prepare for DFest , we will be speaking with a few Oklahoma acts who will be playing this weekend in Tulsa. Comprised of Johnathan Ford (Unwed Sailor), Bryce Chambers (Ester Drang), Aaron Hamby (Callupsie) and Nathan Price (Vandevander), Native Lights was labeled an indie supergroup upon conception. Although many supergroups are started as publicity stunts for short-lived runs, Native Lights is a band comprised of friends with plans on making a serious run as a band. The [...]
Okay, it's just preposterous to call this a June mixtape. But I have something planned for July already. You can download the zip file with the following: 1. mp3s of the songs 2. liner notes (pdf) 3. playlist files (iTunes txt file and an m3u file) (for the iTunes file, simply import all the songs to your library and then go to File->library->import playlist and then select the song list (the txt file). you should now have the 2009june in your iTunes with all the songs in the correct order). [...]
A partial list of bands playing DFest 2009 was announced at a press conference this morning at Dilly Deli in downtown Tulsa. The festival and conference will take place on July 24 & July 25 in downtown Tulsa's historic Blue Dome District. "Dfest 2009 will not only be more exciting with thanks to our new sponsors, partners and venues, but this year's talent will by far be the most exciting and diverse offering yet." - Tom Green This [...]

...with the skies above Dayton filled with rainclouds on a rather dreary Monday evening, from the streetview it would have been easy to mistake the crowd in Blind Bob's for a Friday night. With the trifecta of instrumental bands filing up most of the evening, Hills, Minutes, and Kuan all brought a distinctly different blend to the table. Opening things up, the duo Hills dabbled heavily in spacey atmospherics that may have been better suited to an art gallery or lightshow than a Midwestern bar. Next up were Minutes , who seem to be gaining a full [...]

...we're taking it as a good sign that a bill as good as the one at Blind Bob's can happen on a Monday in Dayton. Headlining tonight you've got Unwed Sailor [pictured] who are currently out on a US tour. In for local support will be Minutes , Kuan , and Hills. We've had both Minutes and Kuan in for The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO over the past few months and we highly recommend you check them out. We'll see you there... MP3: [...]

Singer and Little Brazil chief Landon Hedges played alongside Conor Oberst in Desaparacidos and Tim Kasher in The Good Life before forming LB in 2002 as a solo project, and solidifying the lineup in 2004. Little Brazil is currently out on the road supporting their third album, Son , with fellow Omaha natives Ladyfinger(ne). Son was produced by A.J. Mogis (Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint). audio: Nicholas dates: Mar 27 Czar Bar w/ Roman Numerals Kansas City, Missouri Mar [...]
Delmore Pilcrow / Manned Missiles (J&Js): Chris Garver, central figure behind Delmore Pilcrow, is one of the few artists we've consistently covered over the life of this blog who seems to continually improve, and Manned Missiles seem to be a fairly enjoyable little indie pop band. Anavan / Sydney Confirm / Billingham's Defense System (Fallout): I totally heart when DL accidentally posts about a show that is happening on a day when I'm supposed to write [...]

Well friends, it's Thursday already so that means it's time for our weekly preview of what's in store for Dallas area folks this weekend. After a crazy St. Pat's Day weekend, then multiple days at SXSW, I think I'm mostly looking forward to a more relaxed couple days off. That doesn't mean I or anyone can't check out a good show, however. Follow the jump for my arbitrarily selected list of local events, plus links to where you can buy tickets (to most of the shows). Thursday, March 26 [...]

This weekend is yet another DIY festival. This time for the instrumental kids. Friday is the start of the New Orleans Instrumental Fest . I decided to drop a few question towards one of the young up and coming bands in that group Smiley With A Knife . Static - How much are you going to miss Deuce McAlister and do you think we should trade Reggie Bush? JARED- I only pay attention to the Saints while their games are on. I wasn't aware that Deuce was leaving. I'm [...]

--- confirmed. Jonathan Ford & co. AKA Unwed Sailor return for what promises to be a very special Sunday matinee show. stay tuned as we might have a super sweet co-headliner on this bill also. in the meantime, check out some hot jams off of UW's latest Post-Rock masterpiece, Little Wars . Unwed Sailor - Little Wars Unwed Sailor - [...]

Okkervil River The Stand-Ins Okkervil River are mood music. Meaning I have to be in the mood to listen to a whole album of theirs. So, it's no surprise that this new album finds the same fate. I've read that it's part two of the story that began with their last album, but I've never looked beyond that first review to find out more. The Stand-Ins is a good album and I've recommended it many of my friends, but it's just one of those albums that brings me down [...]

It's been an interesting year with, it seems like, more innovative release than the previous year. It's hard to say what is the best. I'm not a big fan of rating systems so I'm just going to mention 10 releases that I think are great and each release is equal on the list. 1. Al Scorch and the Cold Dead Hands - 73 on Half Day Records Al is a banjo play but not just any banjo player. He's got a legacy in the U.S. for being a super rad dude. He's well known [...]

15 years, 8 albums, and 2 EP's since their debut The Sea and Cake have a created a bristly album you can wipe your maple syrup off with. As we look back on their career we can reminisce at their alumni songwriting that keeps putting the "thrill" in Thrill Jockey's morning coffee. Car Alarm is a bright and frosty album. I got lost in the OCD rhythms of Fuller Moon. I imagined trying to dance to it and envisioned an apartment full of laughter and a need for more of these [...]

Silian Rail at this year's Rock Make Street Festival , August 24, 2008 If you've been following my radio show playlists over the last couple months, you'll have noticed that I've been playing one band pretty consistently: SF locals Silian Rail . First KZSU had their Spring Tour EP on our new file and then their new album And I You, to Pieces came through. I've been listening to and really enjoying both of these records. Silian Rail's music falls in between a number [...]
Yup, this one's a bit late, like that's unusual. You can download the zip file with the following: 1. mp3s of the songs 2. liner notes (pdf) 3. playlist files (iTunes txt file and an m3u file) (for the iTunes file, simply import all the songs to your library and then go to File->import and then select the song list (the txt file). you should now have the 2008august playlist in your iTunes with all the songs in the correct order). Another busy new release Tuesday is upon us and we sample an array of artists and genres on today's program. As a long time of the Apples in Stereo , I'm very excited that Electronic Projects for Musicians is out today on Yep Roc . It's a b-sides and rarities compilation that spans ten years and several delightful albums. We get to a couple tracks from that, including "Stephen Stephen," a tribute to Stephen Colbert . Also, new music from The Black Keys, Sun Kil Moon, REM, and more. To [...]
