Anyone who's lived more than a dozen or so years has to be an expert on something. Sometimes it's just making the perfect cake, playing a favorite video game or celebrity impersonations - but it's something. So occasionally I like to turn YANP over to a favorite musician who lets us in on an area [...]
Not sure how I missed this. This is possibly my favorite song from the new Vandaveer album, Divide and Conquer , which you should buy here ASAP. Any discussion of the most underappreciated album albums of 2009 pretty much needs to start, or stop, or start and stop, with this album. It's spectacular. The band is currently out on tour - though I suspect it's just Mark Charles who's touring - and if you get a chance you should absolutely catch them/him. Those of you in Chicago should [...]
Really enjoying everything I've heard from Vandaveer so far ( "Fistful of Swoon" ), we definitely need to the get ourselves a copy of the Divide & Conquer album. The latest video for "A Mighty Leviathan of Old" was shot in Paris by the amazing Pierre Dejon. Take a few minutes out of your day and watch. Vandaveer - "Turpentine" On the back of their newest Supply and Demand release, Divide & Conquer , which dropped in late August, Washington DC's Vandaveer return with a new video -- this for keynote track "A Mighty Leviathan." Fronted by These United States psuedo-expat Mark Chalres Heidinger, Vandaeer combine elements of 60s psychadelia with a european crispness -- they enjoy France, and it shows. The band soon takes to the road with a nice set of East Coast and Mid-west tour dates... See full dates after the jump. [...]
As far as videos of this type go, where a musician walks down a lonely stretch of road while increasingly bizarre things happens around them, I'll still take St. Vincent's "Marrow," but the single-take music video for Vandaveer's "Mighty Leviathan of Old", from this year's Divide and Conquer , is still definitely worth a look and listen. Littered with random bits of clothing, sprinting businessmen and sad clowns, the video showcases a stately, triumphant folk waltz that drives forward on impassioned vocal performances from Mark Heidinger and Rose Guerin.
Having seen Mark play in and around Lexington for as long as I've lived there, I will occasionally forget that he's getting to be quite the internationally known musician. It's for that reason that I was completely blown away by the quality of his latest video. "Mighty Leviathan of Old" doesn't get some mediocre video [...]

In support of their new LP, Divide & Conquer , Vandaveer is hitting the road. They've got a full plate of shows booked throughout the west coast and beyond. Coupled with the lustrous vocals of Rose Guerin, Vandaveer's Mark Charles Heidinger puts forth an impressive display of true folk-pop. These songs disseminate beauty and purity; songs you will not want to miss in an intimate live setting. Divide & Conquer was released this past August on Supply And Demand Music . Here's "Turpentine", [...]

The Fingertips Top 10 has turned almost entirely over since the last time I posted it, which was in August; just three songs remain from that list. Anyone interested in an impromptu contest, how about this: the first three people who can each identify one of the three songs that are still on the list from the last top 10 post on the blog can pick a CD for free from the Fingertips Prize Closet . Just because. Leave a comment below, and I'll leave an answering comment corroborating each winner and let you know how to get your [...]
Watch 'Divide & Conquer' below. Last month, Vandaveer dropped by WNRN. MP3: Vandaveer- Woolgathering
As a few of you know, I have a few musical projects that take up a lot of my time, and one of them is the indie-folk band Bro. Stephen which just finished up a month-long tour and which will keep me out of Louisville for quite some time. Now, you will have to excuse the shameful self-promotion because this really isn't about me. This is about all of the bands that I've met and will meet along the way and who you should check out and support in hopes that we can lure a few [...]
The follow-up to its 2007 debut, Grace and Speed , avoids the sophomore slump by miles and miles. Vandaveer follows up its smashing and poignant 2007 debut, Grace and Speed, with the superb Divide and Conquer. Mark Charles Heidinger, a wandering folk singer/songwriter from DC by-way-of Kentucky, takes his name from the family name engraved on an heirloom, a watch from his father. He pairs one extreme to another, contrasting wildly vivid and passionate phrases against light and delicate nuances, while incorporating themes of love and death, good and evil, etc. Heidinger's sister, Rose Guerin, adds to the [...]

These United States can't seem to slow down, whether it's pumping out album after album, or whether they're on their relentless tour schedule which has been amongst the most rigorous of any band out there, these kids can't seem to help but play music. Fronted by principal songwriter Jesse Elliot, tUs have been turning heads all over with their folksy indie-roots rock and their incessant touring. According to their website, from Aug 2005 until Dec. 2008, they've played 421 shows, and two albums down and one nearing it's completion. If their songs [...]
Chevy Chase isn't exactly the part of town that first comes to mind when you are thinking of a good place to catch a live show, but Comet Ping Pong in Upper Northwest is quickly establishing itself as a solid live music destination in the District. Known primarily for their wood-burning oven baked pizza (smoked [...]
