I know this is a bit later than usual, but Southern California doesn't really experience fall until around November. In any case, better late than never I suppose. Fall's Hope is a mix of heartbreaking songs that I think capture the season rather beautifully. There are some new artists on here, along with some blog favorites, and I hope you enjoy the hell out of every last song. If you do, please consider supporting the artist by buying their album or at least the song! [...]

Time's whipping by so fast that I have to start planning out these last weeks of 2009 on CTRR. Last year, there were several festive year-end features on the old yuletide blog (groan if you must), including my Year-End Round-Up weekly mixes , the countdown of my Top 40 albums of the year , the Christmas weekly mix , and the New Year's Eve party mix . And I still have to work in my Day of 200 songs before all of this kicks off. This week's mix will be a winter one despite [...]

This is the kind of craziness that I've come to expect of Lady Gaga. In the video for "Bad Romance" Gaga takes visual elements from artists like Britney Spears and Kanye West and mixes them with some Tim Burton. I could have used a little more facial coverage though. Maybe more masks & veils next time? Very nice ending on this. Pigeons and Planes

Flaming Lips: Embryonic (Warner bros.) review by Matthew Lindsay Call it willfully perverse career suicide or seeking out new musical frontiers but one thing is undeniable; the Flaming Lips' sprawling new 18-track disc Embryonic is a bold volte face away from the Hanna Barbera, orch-pop they have been mining since 1999's Soft Bulletin . If the day-glo quirkiness was becoming a bit too cloying by 2006's At War With The Mystics , Embryonic is a paradigm-shifting stroke of audacity that will alienate some, but entice others. Critical opinion is already polarized, [...]

So I've moved to East London, to Queen Mary University. It's good here, I finally feel like I'm not hanging around waiting anymore. And everyone likes good music! I've been to 3 gigs so far - money has stopped me from seeing more, most painfully Biffy Clyro with Manchester Orchestra and Frightened Rabbit, nice one money. Here's the run down of those I did catch. Monday 21st September THE VEILS w/ Swimming, So Say So - London Scala This was an exciting one. 2 days into living in London [...]
I stumbled upon Wooden Veil 's new self-titled Dekorder release yesterday. I'm highly stimulated by the sounds on "Gravity Problems," though some moments of the album lose me, especially when the group moves into synth-terrain and incorporates vocals. Both aspects really distance the overall aesthetic from that brainmelting primordial death-folk woods-banging/droning that projects like Silvester Anfang or Brothers Of The Occult Sisterhood capture so perfectly. The use of vocals reminds me too much of traditional post-Pagan/popular British folk music, and so loses the forest-magic vibe that Wooden Veil oftentimes produces. What I like so much [...]

Music can be so mean sometimes. It gives you something you love then takes it away. News surfaced today that The Rakes have split up, cancelling the remaining dates of their tour. Basically I'm gutted - these guys made straight forward indie with just the right amount of wit and edge. Their debut 'Capture/Release' came out on my 14th birthday and I still remember getting it that day and playing it all the way through, reading the lyrics in the booklet. The band released this statement on the reason for the split: " The Rakes have always been [...]
This week may provide the greatest variety of music releases all year. From Sufjan Stevens' debut classical work, The BQE to Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard's collaborative effort One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur to Things About Comin' My Way - A Tribute to The Mississippi Sheiks , the week's release list is filled with variety. The week is deep in quality releases, from what I have already heard I can strongly recommend The Atlas [...]

As promised in my last post about the Manics show in Toronto, one of this week's mixes will be Manics-themed. It couldn't just be a bunch of Manics album tracks, nor even a bunch of b-sides (frankly, I do enough of those in other mixes and posts, and that would all be too easy). Since they are one of the most dynamic live bands in the world, this mix is comprised of tracks from various bootlegs of Manics gigs. I have nowhere near the amount of bootlegs other Manics fans have, but I delved into what I did have and [...]
Well, so much for an album full of manufactured R&B pop. "3 Words," the next single and title track off of Cheryl Cole 's debut solo album, is just about the antithesis of lead single, "Fight For This Love." Complimented by a throbbing pulse and guitar strum devoid of form, "3 Words" is mesmerizing in its listlessness; a brave choice for second single (or any single for that matter). "It was those three words that saved my life," Cole coos as the track shifts form throughout, transforming from a guitar strum into a lulling [...]

It's hot. Well, no, it was hot. There was a lot of people around the pool, they were jumping, diving, running (though it was forbidden), they [...]

Shaa'ir + Func , menwhopause (pictured) and Motherjane will represent India on a new compilation called PEACE that features artists from over 50 countries. The compilation will be released digitally in January 2010 with a pay-what-you-want system (minimum two Euros), and all the proceeds will go to Amnesty International's humanitarian aid projects in areas of conflict. Over 100 artists are participating in this effort from regions as diverse as Palestine, Algeria, Burundi and Iceland. What's cool about this compilation is that it's not one of those no-cred comps that features absolutely unknowns. [...]

Jack White shreds the guitar, howls like a banshee and dabbles in acting but in Dead Weather's new video for "I Cut Like A Buffalo" Mr. White adds yet another string to his weirdo bow - Directing. As one might expect the video is slightly unnerving, a lil' film noir and all sorts of kooky. I feel like someone might stab me from behind the computer screen you know? Having said that it's a lot less violent than the guns a blazin' showdown of Dead Weather's "Threat Me Like Your Mother" video. Instead [...]

Hometown boys, The Jaguar Club , finish up their tour this weekend in NYC. Its been a fantastic last few months for them, playing to sold out crowds alongside Foreign Born, The Grates and The Veils. Early last month, they released their debut album, And We Wake Up Slowly . With 2 years spent on the road, playing shows up and down the East coast, The Jaguar Club finally decided to stay put for awhile to focus their efforts wholeheartedly on crafting their debut [...]
