Festival season here in the Puget Sound is kicking into high gear (pedal to the metal, dudes), with all sorts of recent announcements being broadcast over the ether and internets (see: Capitol Hill Block Party , Doe Bay Fest , Decibel Festival , West Seattle Summerfest , Georgetown Musicfest aka Artopia , others I'm forgetting). The eminent Noise for the Needy commenced last night (6/10) with a rousing show from Slender Means, Fences, New Faces, and Red Sharks at Neumos. Actually, I have no idea [...]

Cassie was insistent I catch Velella Velella . Seriously, she said. I think you'll really dig them. We were hanging out front of King Cobra, a key Capitol Hill Block Party stage a few doors from Comet Tavern. I'm sold, I thought. Sounds good to me. As the band set up on stage I noted a few items... One: There were four or five keyboards. So many, in fact, that the final one wouldn't fit lined up next [...]

When I hear the word noise I think of bands like AIDS Wolf or Lightning Bolt, acts that construct tables with contact mics on the board and then distort the hammering and screwing. You know, something at least somewhat noisy? Granted, I don't know EVERY band on the bill for the upcoming Noise for the Needy shows in Seattle, Washington ; however, the ones I do know I would not classify as "noise." On the other hand, Noise for the Needy IS a charitable organization trying to do good in the world, so [...]

Exaltation comes in many forms. The latest one for me is once again seeing the word Crocodile associated with live Seattle music. It champions the somewhat lesser excitement around U.S.E. (short for United State Of Electronica ) and their upcoming release L O V E W O R L D , but only because the Croc has been a longtime favorite spot to see great bands. The two will meet - two being the Crocodile and U.S.E. - on March 28. That means clear tomorrow's schedule. As a bonus [...]
Hello, househeads. This week we've got a room full of Carnys banging beats on stolen gear. The problem is, their little cabbage hands can't keep the beat fast enough. But little Timmy Hamberlin wants to dance! so the beat keeps on. In other words, the jams are slow (100 bpm) and fresh (check the tracklist). Listen To SofT Week 036 Now It's slow as Sunday drivers this time around and we're all the better for it. We'll be safe and groovy all [...]

. Spokane resident, Stones Throw alum and all around party-rawker James Pants will be tearing down the house at Nectar this Saturday Dec. 13th . If you were in attendance for his set during the Solstice you recall just how live of a show he can put on. He is one uber talented dude and truly something to witness up close and in person. . Honestly tho, I am even more pumped to see [...]

From here : Blue Buttons are not true jellyfish, but are Chondrophores. These are actually colonies of polyps. In other words, they are like a tiny colony of animals. Each animal contributes something different to the colony. Some form the central disk, while others form the tentacles. Blue buttons exist in colonies, and mass beachings frequently occur since they are at the mercy of the [...]

Bumbershoot | Seattle, WA Bumbershoot , Seattle's Annual Music and Arts Festival starts tomorrow ( Aug 30 ) and continues throughout the Labor Day weekend. Music critic in-residence Drake Lelane will be on the scene in Seattle Center this weekend reporting on all the comings and goings at the festival. Take a look at the (very impressive) partial list of Bumbershoot performers after the jump. Check out the entire mind-blowing lineup over here . Bumbershoot [...]
Bumbershoot is about music, of course, but it's also about every other kind of performance you can imagine, from dance and comedy to film and literary and visual arts. And, if you're a kid, it's also about face painting, arts and crafts, learning about clay animation, science and doing the limbo. "Overall, there's so much to do that would satisfy people of almost every age," senior programming manager Bob Redmond said. "We tend not to say, 'This is appropriate for 10-year-olds or for 15-year-olds.' It's just such a grand spectacle. There are only a couple of things [...]
