Arresting, intense folk-rock Americana Lissie Maurus is a folk-rock singer from the southwest Illinois border town of Rock Island. Although there's a rustic Midwestern edge to her Americana, her transplantation to Los Angeles, and national and international gigs have elevated her music beyond coffee-house strumming. Her voice pulls you in close with confessional introductions and then attacks with arresting outbursts of emotion. The exclamation of "danger will follow me now everywhere I go, angels will fall on me and take me to my home" finds her bending back from the microphone to make room [...]
Way back in '97 and '98 there was an Irish band called Junkster who made really good electro indie music not a million miles from the current music of Alphastates. They released one good 'self-titled' album, two good singles and opened Slane in 1998 for the likes of The Verve, Robbie Williams and James. Strange that with the limelight shining on them for those two years that there is very little online about the band! Here's what I found; Junkster were Deirdre O'Neill [Vocals], Aidan Lane [Guitar], Mick Creedon [Guitar], Graham Darcy [Bass Guitar] and Donal [...]

According to the geniuses @ hollywoodgossip .com, 76% of the respondents in an online poll thought that Katharine McPhee looked better with "brown and flowing" hair as opposed to "blonde and pulled up", an important fact that certainly gets at the soft and squishy core of forever having the "American Idol" tag attached to your name. We've, however, been speculating that McPhee's second album, the oft delayed Unbroken (January 5) may have some solid musical value...and there are [...]

By Oliver Wang Mainstream R&B radio, retail and video industries never had cause to pay retro-soul much mind until Amy Winehouse demonstrated its commercial potential. ( Sean Gallup / Getty Images Entertainment ) In the early 1990s, two brothers and some friends in Munich formed the Poets of Rhythm, a band inspired by the "deep [...]
A Revolutionary Spirit Riding on waves of gloomy synths and guitars delayed into the next dimension, this 4-piece from Wrexham deliver doom-ridden space-rock with a passion, instantly calling to mind influences from fellow Northerner souls of yore The Verve. A Revolutionary Spirit - Mind ( mp3 )

It's been over a decade since Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs and Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea , two albums that pushed the boundaries of chamber-pop and psychedelic rock in an era of indie innovation that has few rivals. Without shouldering them with the burden of exaggerated expectations, blossoming Los Angeles act Pepper Rabbit picks up where those records left off - stylistically, if not yet quite qualitatively. But on two self-released EPs, the band's music aches with potential. Throughout, Pepper Rabbit goes dark and deep, letting [...]
This new commercial for the newest HTC smartphone gets my attention everytime. You know the one, the one that says: "You don't need to get a phone. You need a phone that gets you. And you. And you. And you". I'll admint that HTC phone looks pretty slick, but its the song playing in the background that has my heart. That tune, that probably has your attention too, is Nina Simone 's 1965 version of the American traditional song Sinnerman , with Felix da Housecat 's remxing touch. Download: Nina Simone - Sinnerman (Felix [...]

As we progress down our path of the loveliest music of the decade, we'll give you a bit more detail on the records we've chosen. While we were infatuated with numbers 31-40 (which you can read here), we're ready to go to battle over every selection from 1 to 30. Not a bad song on any of these albums, if you ask us. You can listen to the entire album of each of these by registering with Lala.com.... but you knew that, right? While we don't claim this to be a defining document of merit, we [...]
When you put together a list of venues where Umphrey's McGee always delivers, you'd have to start with Higher Ground just outside of Burlington, VT. The Chicago-based sextet finished a three-night stand at the rock club on Saturday night that will go down among the best in their history. Whether they were kicking out a spirited dose of improvisation, welcoming one of their friends to the stage for a sit-in or dusting off a rarity, everything Umphrey's touched over the six sets at Higher Ground turned to gold. The veteran bluesman's album delivers on its title, offering his usual eclectic mix of soul-blues, jumping juke-joint R&B, and country-blues with a thick vein of string-bending guitar rock coursing through it, too. Last year, Joe Louis Walker teamed up with producer/guitarist Duke Robillard and cut Witness to the Blues, the San Francisco-born bluesman's 19th album in 23 years and debut for Stony Plain. The record was such a success that the couple decided to have another go-around. As its title suggests, Between a Rock and the Blues defies easy categorization. More so than its predecessor or earlier outings for [...]

Last night was rather marvellous. A quartet of ageing hipsters set sail for Stroud and an evening of splendid musical entertainment. Rodborough's Prince Albert public house was hosting a trio of wonderful acts, with Celtic pop imp, Euros Childs, headlining proceedings. A brief word about the venue. The Prince Albert proved a charming base for jollity, a non-corporate old-style boozer with roaring fire, fine ales, pet dogs striding around the carpet and walls covered in esoteric and eye-catching artefacts. The main (only?) bar was an ample L-shape and, without trying to be Madison Square Garden, accommodated plenty of [...]

By Pete Donahue I admit I am not too familiar with Devendra Banhart's previous work. I have heard bits and pieces; when his last album, 2007's Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon , was released, I sought it out not because I was intrigued by all the critical praise and blog hype, but because I read Nick Valensi of the Strokes provided guest vocals (in French) on a track called "Shabop Shalom." I still can't tell if I even hear Valensi on the track, but the song was interesting enough [...]
Kasper Bjorke is one of our favorite Danish electronic producers of the moment. "Kasper Bjorke" is his solo project exploring analogue disco sounds while "Kasper Bjorke and The Friendly Ghosts" is his alter ego for a more minimal techno/house project. He recently finished working on his second album Standing On Top Of Utopia which is set for release early next year (February 1st) and has already released his first single " Young Again " featuring the indie singer Jacob Bellens, with remixes from WhoMadeWho , [...]

The first single, White Russian Doll, from their 2010 album. Lucky Soul White Russian Doll from Ruffa Lane If you don't know Lucky Soul, read these posts . They're one of the few bands that can be described as having vim, verve and vigor. Their last album, [...]

The artists formerly know as Rosie Oddie and the Odd Bunch descended upon the hordes (well around 100 of them) of Camden, bringing an energetic and bouncy flavour of punky pop rock to the launch of their new EP 'Black America'. The star of the show is clearly leading lady Rosie Oddie (spawn of everyone's favourite ornithologist Bill) whose raspy vocal matched with some verve on stage is quite contagious and got me dancing along (albeit at a slightly slower pace) to some incredibly easy-on-the-ear tunes. Although my socks weren't exactly blown from my feet [...]
