Each month, HT Contributor Ben Wiser will take a closer look at notable performances of Dark Star. If you have any favorite Stars you would like him to cover, send the date over to darkstarstories@yahoo.com Last month I touched on the great Halloween night Dark Star from the Oakland Coliseum Arena back in 1991. That was the night Ken Kesey showed up and delivered his eulogy to Bill Graham. He recited some e.e. cummings and gave us the great line - "In any given situation [...]

Grateful Dead: Early Morning Rain [ purchase ] It's kind of funny, isn't it? The theme this week in "Early", yet we're late in getting the theme started. So let me start it off with a song that is an early recording, but coincidentally also has "Early" in the title. The Dead's take on this Gordon Lightfoot song was recorded in late 1965, while they were still known as the Warlocks, and more than a year before their debut album came out. The jangly pop [...]
I've been quietly watching Joss Stone battle her record label since last May , around the time when she started to perform "Free Me" live. Understand that this isn't The Warlocks Vs. Puffy. Joss offered to pay back $1.2 million to EMI in order to be released , claiming the label seemed to be in disarray after being acquired by Terra Firma. And, Stone has three albums & eleven million records sold, all at the young age of twenty-two, so we'll assume she's got the fanbase to recoup whatever she might have paid. She's always pushed [...]

Here are a few good shows that are on my radar for the weekend. Tonight I'm going to watch Mike Relm do his audio-visual mashup thing at the Austin Music Hall . Wilco is at the Cedar Park Center , too. Friday it is Black Lips and Strange Boys at the Mohawk , or Dan Deacon at Emo's . Black Lips - "Disconnection" myspace.com/theblacklips The Strange Boys - "Probation Blues" [...]
Spindrift takes Morricone's spaghetti western a step further to psychedelia. Hallucinogenic spaghetti western and spooky rock 'n' roll flood the soundtrack to indie flick The Legend of God's Gun. Spindrift released their The Legend of God's Gun soundtrack in July, and it is in the same vein as their successful The West on the Dandy Warhols' Beat the World label. Featuring members from bands such as the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Warlocks, Spindrift illustrate hazy psychedelic desert scenes and gunslingers in ghost towns. Conjuring Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for A Fistful of Dollars, a Spaghetti Western from the late [...]

"Sabotage! I don't like it! I don't like this sabotage. I don't like it . I do what I do here!" - Tom Scharpling, denouncing the diabolical forces that dared to attack his equipment "You can't talk to me like that. You know why? 'Cause I'm a professional basketball star, you piece of f uuuuuuuu dge." - Rick Stevens, reducing Tom to a mere confection for failing to recognize his lofty status "What is that ? What is it? It sounds like a reaction. [...]

For a long drive with nothing to think about.
![Review: Fleeting Joys | Occult Radiance [MP3]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1972343_lg.jpg)
We've been talking about it for more than a year, but the sophomore record from Fleeting Joys is finally here. The elephant in the room when discussing the superlative Northern California-based shoegaze duo is the similarity between its music and the most well-known and inflential portion of My Bloody Valentine 's body of work. It bears mentioning and is a useful shorthand, but we expect Fleeting Joys ' John Loring and Rorika grow weary of the obvious comparison (they list MBV first among their influences at MySpace ) even as they are gratified [...]

I really, really, really wouldn't ever want to eat a black apple, but I really dig listenin' to 'em. This band is R-A-D. They describe themselves as "a new psychedelic surf rock group" but I think it sounds more like if the make up were to get into it with a gang of twacked out surf punks in an alley on skid row - but only if after the fight they ate peyote buttons in your mom's garage. Together. While she was home. And they were still bloody. Totally. Crazy. In addition to shows [...]
It's fitting that notoriously debauched band the Dandy Warhols is playing Pop's tonight. (Spindrift, a project featuring members of Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Warlocks, opens.) Tix are ... Continue reading "Tonight! The Dandy Warhols and Spindrift at Pop's" >
![The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Smoking Acid [EP]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1965527_lg.jpg)
The Warlocks swept on stage at Spaceland shrouded in scarlet-tinged smoke and dressed (mostly) in black. It was all very serious. No one spoke. People shifted from foot to foot expectantly. Throats cleared. Then the first droning notes from singer Bobby Hecksher's guitar slithered between us like a python, heavy.

PoPo (Philadelphia, PA) [JAX PICK] PoPo @ Discotheque - God I fucking love the PoPo . The Philadelphia, PA natives and resident indie rock band of Mad Decent will be DJing at Discotheque tonight. Discotheque is a new weekly night happening every Friday at the 740 Club downtown at 740 Broadway. Traditionally nights like these make my skin crawl but the POPO are fabulous and worth the outing. Be sure to get there [...]

Tonight: The Morning After Girls [pictured], who've released one of my favorite shoegaze albums of the year, "Alone," roll back into L.A. tonight, supporting two local bands who grow their music from the same sonic soil, the Warlocks and Gliss . Should be a lively night of distortion and fuzz at Spaceland. ... Ted Leo & the Pharmacists headline the Echo, while downstairs Brazilian superstars Os Mutantes hold forth. ... Pete Yorn does a second night at the Music Box @ Fonda, this one supported by [...]
