Welp, Canadian Music Week is coming up, so reviewing Emma-Lee 's debut album is perfect timing to encourage people to check her out and consider seeing her live. Emma-Lee hails from our very own Toronto, and is an incredibly self-sufficient artist by self-producing, self-managing, self-promoting, and even self-photo-taking (although she is now co-managing with Bumstead). She has presented us with Never Just a Dream , an amalgamation of jazz, pop, folk, and ballads, re-released last week after joining the label. At a glance, she is said to be comparable to the likes of Norah [...]

Looking at my picks of the week over the past 5 weeks I feel like I've unfairly been discriminating against bands of the rock/pop genre. There's been a couple of big collective type bands ( Rah Rah , Bruce Peninsula ), a couple of more ambient-atmospheric types ( Animal Collective , The Antlers ), but I suppose there was Ketch Harbour Wolves ... nevermind... ... although this album, Endless Water by the Darcys stands out in my mind as being very different from KHWs, and here's why.... I [...]

Ten Reasons Sia Furler is XO's Fave Pop Star of 2008 : 1) She did it the old-school music biz method: this album is a grower and she promoted it that way, building the buzz over time, 2) her voice, 3) her voice, 4) her songs - holy shit!, 5) her clever videos on a low budget, 6) her voice, 7) the fact that she is inspirational - the lyrics are words to live by. 8) She is an Aussie and The "Royal We" love Aussies and New Zealanders, 9) her sign language skills and [...]

I saw Animal Collective at Rogers Picnic this year without knowing many of their songs, having been more experienced more with Panda Bear . I tried to listen to some Animal Collective tracks but I would end up giving up due to going insane (some of their arrangements cause my head to explode…not that its bad, just unlistenable). I summed up the courage to check out just 4 tracks especially after Christian recommended the song Seal Eyeing as one of his top ten of the year. While I realize this doesn't mean much, [...]
I heard about The Rumble Strips through Chomewaves and furthermore through Panic Manual 's Ricky who talked to me about the show doing very poorly in terms of numbers. Their album, Girls and Weather was released last year and was given a quiet release stateside this year. Being on a label that is a small wing of a major label, should have netted them some more publicity but alas, they have been seldom heard. At initial trials, I really didn't warm to any of their songs with the exception of Motorcycle which is [...]
