Erm, really sorry that this is so very, very late, but life rather caught up with me this week. So I never quite managed to find time to get my shit together until this evening, unfortunately. It's surprising how much of my time these weekly podcasts seem to take up - it can be quite hard to find an evening every single week to record these things. What I find amazing is that I don't run out of blather. I don't recall ever saying anything profound or all that intelligent either, so this little collection must represent hours [...]

It may be February but we can dream of summer with Zoe. And her classic chillout pop "Sunshine on a Rainy Day" (1990). From discogs: b. Zoe Pollock, Peckham, London, England. Zoe made a huge impact in 1991 with the release of her debut single, "Sunshine On A Rainy Day", a perfect Europop cover version that went to number 4 in the UK charts. It had originally been released a year earlier when it reached the Top 60. However, subsequent efforts "Lightning" and "Holy Days" fared poorly. When her solo debut also flopped, she found herself in [...]
...and, unlike certain other iPhone apps we've featured here, the brand-spankin' new Altrok Radio iPhone app has a lot going for it: It's free . It's also commercial-free. It's your first sneak preview of what can best be called "Altrok Radio 2.0" It's a 24-hour format , rather than a daily playlist. What can I say, some folks like to listen for more than eight hours. When you listen, here's what you'll hear... Our top [...]

Walkner.Möstl is more European downtempo, from the great surge in the late 1990s. And Walkner.Mostl were a duo who appeared first on the leading downtempo label, G-Stone. If Kruder and Dorfmeister are the big daddy pilots of the European mothership, then Walkner and Mostl are their most favoured sons. Out of G-Stone where K + D do their separate things, Heaven and Hell is up there at the same giddy heights as Peter Kruder's '99 benchmark, Peace Orchestra. While Dorfmeister flips out new releases like a ninja throwing star knives, Kruder is frustratingly reserved. This unheralded [...]

This is all about my beepy-bloopy tendencies and how I got into the stuff in the first place. I better point out, right at the beginning, that I don't see there being any difference between indie and electronica exactly. Or at least, the dividing line is so blurred and there is so much crossover that the distinction is completely pointless, really. I think the only reason I really make a distinction myself is because I became a music obsessive by listening to the likes of Dylan and Tom Waits and so on, and then moved onto [...]
A new year, and the first All-Request show of 2010. Some great covers and Tina joins me for Musically Challenged trivia at the end. 52 minutes | Sponsor: Introducing The AudioEngine P4 : The high-performance bookshelf speaker pair with the same great looks and sound as their powered speakers, but without the built-in amplifiers. Beautiful, small, and affordable, AP4 is the perfect choice for your living room, bedroom or office and an ideal surround speaker [...]

Well this was actually much more tricky than anticipated. Since my heroin like addiction to Spotify developed, I've gone off the musical beaten track somewhat and end up taking swerving journeys through The Waterboys ' back catalog, Brian Eno's experimental ambient albums and hideous amounts of French dance, most notably M83 . In this age of mouth watering musical emancipation I don't seem listen to many new releases unless I review them. So with these encouraging words in mind here's my somewhat skewed list of 2009's top releases (in no particular order): [...]

It does only seem like last year when there was a debate in the media about what to call this decade. I've really enjoyed reading the various 'best of ...' lists in the media and on the blogsphere. This post aims to outline my perspective on the Irish Music Scene over the last decade! By the year 2000, we had accumulated a wealth of disposable income which in the main resulted in more of us attending gigs, more of us learning to play instruments and more [...]

It's not a secret that I hated 2009 as much as 2008. It was deep layers of misery on so many levels (we're talking unexpected death, etc) and even the final days have been madness. Like everyone is jinxed. As these things always go, I thought it was one of the best years in music in AGES. Just one amazing song after another to carry me though. I had intended this list to be my Top Ten Plus One , but I had too many favorite albums. A luxury problem, as I say. And [...]

I didn't know much about The Waterboys until somebody at The CD Store I managed in 1986 started playing them from time to time. I can remember, one of my favorite DJs from all my time in Boston, Morning Guy Tai at WFNX playing The Waterboys fairly often during his stint as the Morning Drive guy from 1985-1997. No offense to all who have come and gone since, the morning show hasn't been the same since. Just my two cents. Anyway, Tai was a fan of The Waterboys and played several of their tracks fairly often including "The Whole of The [...]

Many of us weren't around in the original Horslips days but we can surely thank our parents for introducing us to one of Ireland's most memorable bands. At a triumphant gig in The O2 though we were reminded of why they are held in such high esteem. The band's musical arrangements were as impressive as ever and it was an inspiration to see a band that hadn't played together for several years come across as if the band had been playing gigs every night in dancehalls throughout Ireland. However, with this comeback they were missing original Drummer [...]
Everyone's favourite Auntie returns, showing us just how diverse her tastes and abilities are. Saints And Scoundrels is a solid collection of tunes with an upbeat feel, with a wealth of special guests joining Sharon and her band for the pleasant ride. Included are a couple of exclusives. Imelda May's upbeat rockabilly track 'Go Tell The Devil' was written for this collection, whilst 'Saints and Angels', amazingly, was written for The Waterboys' Fisherman's Blues sessions but was never included on the album. To make it even more worthwhile, this particular track also features a [...]
On the morning of December 7, 1941, the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan, precipitating America's entry into World War II and marking one of the pivotal dates of the 20th century. In an odd numerological coincidence, exactly 68 years after what President Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously called "a day which will live in infamy," we probe the depths of #68 songs--more proof that despite all the heavy lifting entailed by this quest, we are fully in sync with the universe and doing exactly what needs to be done... "She's [...]
This debut album from Kildare's Band On An Island has been many years in the making. Championed by our own Niall Byrne as far back as 2006, the Newbridge-based six-piece have been ploughing what must have seemed a lonely furrow for so long. The fact remains that their kind of poetic rock was probably more at home in the 1980s and early '90s than now, calling to mind, as it does, The Waterboys, Echo And The Bunnymen and even early Frames. Before those of you of a similar vintage to State get all dewy-eyed and nostalgic, [...]
Irish songcraftsman Fionn Regan 's soft-spoken 2006 debut album The End of History (Lost Highway) was a remarkably assured and literate collection of lo-fi, self-produced modern folk/rock with a sound that one critic described as "a more sunny sounding Nick Drake." With a beguiling mix of smarts and lack of pretense, History was a lesson in brilliant, often darkly hued writing and superbly rendered, stark production that still managed a warm embrace. Every note seemed included with a purpose but the sound was never mannered or overly structured. Not surprisingly, Regan found a welcoming critical [...]
This was a great album released in 1985. For some reason this album has an alluring quality to it that beckons the listener to absorb it completely. I was thrilled when it was finally given the treatment it deserved. The remaster is glorious. There are instruments that I never heard on the orginial CD pressing. This expanded version of this undisputed classic Waterboys album includes a bonus disc
Earlier this year, I feel into passionate love with a track by Roots Union called Rough Diamonds ( read post ). Beautiful, rustic English folk that has just enough melodicism to verge into pop. Their album comes out in 2010, but before that we have Mumford & Sons and their own debut Sigh No More. I think this [...]
