Yes, I'm dragging my boyfriend to a cat show tomorrow. In honor of that I'm posting my favorite song about cats EVER. Plea From a Cat Named Virtute - The WeakerthansAnd speaking of the Weakerthans, John K. Samson just released a three-song solo record City Route 85 for Anti. We quite like it as well! Also the above cat is my gal Mudpie. She needs a LOL caption, don'tcha think?

After spending several hours and TTC rides with my iPod revisiting literally hundreds of albums spawned from the decade that began at the turn of the century, I managed to whittle down a pretty extensive list to a mere 50 choices. These are not the best albums of the decade, these are simply the ones that have spent the most time in my headphones. And I rambled enough about that here , so let's just get on with the list: 50. Gold - Ryan Adams (2001) [...]

MP3: The Weakerthans - One Great City! #15 - The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site Epitaph Records 2003 Matt On Reconstruction Site: Personally, I find this record to be criminally underrated in large circles. The Weakerthans finally found their home in slightly slicker production values to finally put the focus on John K. Samson's lyrics and give the music the light it had always deserved.
Today's song is another gorgeous effort from Toronto's The Rural Alberta Advantage . In the Summertime is the closing track from the indie-rock trio's debut full-length album Hometowns , independently released in early 2008 and then re-released on July 7th of this year following the band's signing with Saddle Creek Records . I know I've mentioned it before, but I just can't get over how much Nils Edenlof sounds like Jeff Mangum when he throws himself into a lyric. If there are any readers from Ontario/Quebec reading this post, The Rural Alberta advantage [...]

JOHN K. SAMSON - "City Route 853 (Anti-) John K. Samson, singer/songwriter/guitar player for punk laureates The Weakerthans, has dabbled with solo recordings previously, but they were low budget under-released affairs with material equal to that of the recording quality. But his latest EP, a 73 for Anti-, the label he records for with the Weakerthans, is a batch of solo material finally worthy of space alongside his band material. The three-song EP, rumored to be the first of several 73s about roads in Samson's hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, begins with "Heart of the [...]

Winter will soon be upon us, which means more layered clothing and less outdoor activities. If you're like me, the thought of transitioning from the warm and energizing days of summer to the frostbitten and melancholy days of winter is as shocking as stepping from a sauna into a popsicle. Fortunately, for our emotional well-being, little reminders of summer pop up periodically during these frigid months and warm things up a bit. Land of Talk did just that. The opening band, a Los Angeles power-pop quartet called Eulogies , merely broke the silence [...]

Hot Thespian Action, in no particular order, Shannon Guile, Jacqueline Loewen, Garth Merkeley, Ryan Miller and Jane Testar Raise your hand if you love Winnipeg. Well some kids from The Peg are coming to Toronto next week for the sketch fest to try to make us laugh. I don't know anything about these guys except that their name, Hot Thespian Action , kind of looks like Hot Asian Action if you read it really quickly. Here is what the gang had to say: How would you [...]

John K.Samson of The Weakerthans has released his debut solo EP, City Route 85 . The three song EP is the first of a series of recordings based on the roadways surrounding Samson's hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and it will be available as either a vinyl 7-inch or a digital download. City Route 85 refers to Portage Avenue, a main street in Winnipeg. The songs on the three-song EP chronicle the plights of different people on Portage Avenue, including "Cruise Night"'s tale of a young man who wants to join [...]

John K. Samson (of The Weakerthans) at The Music Hall of Williamsburg (09/18/09) Photo : Matt Fricovsky ( more ) DOWNLOAD : "Cruise Night" - John K. Samson (mp3) When a band takes 4 years between albums, a three song EP from the primary songwriter still counts as an "event" in my books. As is usually the case, John K. Samson takes on his (and my) hometown as the subject of his new short player, City Route [...]
Canadian folk/punk band The Weakerthans can thank their existence to leader John K. Samson, who decided to leave those precocious veganarchists, aka Propagandhi, to make more melodic music. Now Samson is spreading his wings in an even more poetic direction with his soon-to-be-released solo EP entitled City Route 85 . This marks a return to solo work for Samson, whose last such effort was 1995's Little Pictures . The plan is that City Route 85 will be the first in a series of probably three EPs that are inspired [...]
Everything I seem to read about Ox states that the Sudbury, Ontario band's debut album was "weed soaked" or "dope-soaked" or up in smoke. I got to tell you: that doesn't really do anything for me. To each his own, I always say, but when I think of stoner rock, I picture over-aged Deadheads trying to capture an elusive thread of their youth before it pulls apart the seams of their every day existence. Worse yet, are teens and 20 year-olds that try to achieve that exact same high, but vicariously through experiences they've [...]
Rock Plaza Central released a stellar album earlier this year. With it, the Canadian natives proved that they are certainly no strangers to warm Americana textures. The album is an extraordinary trip through twang laden folk-rock. This summer, we got a chance to catch them on the live circuit, and were able to ask Eaton a few questions about his music, resulting in an informative interview . While Chris Eaton and co. have recently finished up a tour with The Weakerthans in support of At the Moment of our Most Needing... [...]
Propagandhi @ Satyricon, tonight For whatever reason, I vividly remember the day I discovered Propagandi. I was about 14 or 15, on a train with some friends to San Francisco and one produced Less Talk More Rock . I listened over and over and over, blown away by the politics that would quickly lead-or should I say guilt-me into an ill-fated stint at vegetarianism. When I hear them now I wonder if I've gone soft, politically speaking. How does the saying go? If you're not anti-establishment at the age of [...]
Brian's taken ownership of this Themecast idea but I thought I would hijack it for this week. I've got 30 minutes worth of music and the rough theme throughout all of the songs will be revealed if you listen closely and figure out the song titles. I won't be given them away at all. I will, however give you the bands and albums: Metric (Fantasies) Chairlift (Does You Inspire You) Elsiane (Hybrid) This Will Destroy You [...]

This is the fourth stop (out of ten) on the Albums Of The Decade Blog Tour that features a ton of great music bloggers listing their favorites from the years 2000-2009. Yesterday's list featured ten albums from Built On A Weak Spot and tomorrow's will be provided by Clicky Clicky Music . For the complete schedule or any of the other lists, go check out Albums Of The Decade Blog Tour . I'm not sure how anyone is realistically supposed to accurately and/or adequately represent their favorite albums of a [...]

As we inundate you with new material, album reviews, concert information and the like, we rarely ever get the chance to show you what's been hot on our playlists lately. You hear a track during the picks of the week for our radio show but that doesn't exactly suffice, in my opinion. So I'll try to come up with more playlists, throughout our usual posting, of music I am liking, have liked, and am just plain listening to. Besides, everyone loves a good (yep, I can't go wrong) mix. Florence + The Machine - "Cosmic Love" [...]

Frank Yang Dan Mangan 's latest album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice , is something special indeed. Even since writing a glowing review , the record has grown on me even more and I was plenty anxious to hear it done live. Somewhat surprising was that while Mangan was touring as a four-piece (I think the fifth player on stage was a Toronto-only guest), they were performing drummer-less, instead building their sound with strings, keys and horns and while I'm sure it'd have sounded just as great with a [...]

Frank Yang As with pretty much every night last week, Friday came with a list of entertainment options a mile long, and while some more intrepid types tried to take in as much of it as possible via club and in-store hopping, I was content to settle in at the Rivoli for what promised to be an exceedingly solid night of music headlined by Vancouver's Dan Mangan . A bit of set time miscommunication meant missing much of The Sure Things' set but I did manage to catch their last few [...]
