By Jean Smith, novelist and singer in the literary rock duo Mecca Normal Rather than present a quasi-factual, semi-amusing trajectory through origins of the word "underground" -- complete with references to the Underground Railroad and the Weather Underground -- I want to open a window into how and why I do things. I invite everyone reading this to compare this to conventional objectives of mainstream bands. Historically, artists have been put into categories invented by the media, defined by journalists who grapple with language to supply the general public with [...]

Miguel De Deus: Mister Funk and Black Soul Brothers From: Black Soul Brothers [Underground, 1977] Time to shake those Monday blues away with some down and dirty funk from Brazil in the shape of the first and only solo release from Miguel De Deus: Black Soul Brothers. Whenever I see an album with that kind of title my first reaction is one of excitement and fear. Excitement because the title promises all kinds of awesomeness awaiting on the vinyl and fear because [...]

This is going to be another quick weekend post. I'm writing this from the back patio at El Biet in Williamsburg, the weather is incredible, I'm with a good friend, the blog is doing great and I couldn't be happier - La vie en rose. Anyways, as I sit here waiting for my next meeting there's one song that always comes to mind on great Sundays - The Velvet Underground's Sunday Morning . The Velvet Underground & Nico is one of my favorite albums of all time, lyrically Lou Reed explores themes and emotions rarely heard back then and [...]
Massive Attack are currently mixing their upcoming fifth studio album. Robert del Naja had suggested Weather Underground was its working title, although the final title has not been announced. Officially confirmed guest vocalists are Horace Andy, Tunde Adebimpe, Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Guy Garvey and Martina Topley-Bird. Several artists did record sessions but will not appear in the album. These artists are Jhelisa Anderson (also recorded unreleased material in 2002), Stephanie Dosen, Yolanda Quarty (of Phantom Limb), Aku and Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh of Dragons of Zynth, Elizabeth Fraser, Dot Allison, Debbie Clare, Mike Patton, Fredo Viola and Beth Orton.

Squarepusher: Don't Go Plastic , Ill Descent and Shin Triad From: Music is Rotted One Note [Warp, 1998] Before I dive into the subject matter of this week's post, I would like to personally thank Junior and Chuck for making the switch over to Wordpress without any major issues occurring. I apologize that I have been missing in action lately, but life has been smacking me around like a red-headed step child. I hope to get my bearings and post on a more regular basis, but [...]

It is time for Halloween! And I haven't done an A to Z post in like forever, so, two birds, one post. You get the idea. As always, a zip file is hidden, lurking creepily in the shadows below. A is for Arctic Monkeys-Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But… I loved this band's first album. Their stuff went progressively downhill, but none of of it sucks. B is for Ben Gibbard-Thriller (Michael Jackson cover). A classic. All [...]

MySpace Opening up with the sound of bird noises might be a bit of an over-sell, but forgiveness comes easily when the multi-layered harmonies of Toronto's The Wilderness Of Manitoba arrive and usher in their debut EP, Hymns Of Love And Spirits . Sharing members with Provincial Parks and Key Witness , The Wilderness of Manitoba come with a very clear and direct mandate - to craft gentle, intricate folk songs of the sort that no one seems to make anymore. Of course, that's a mandate [...]

After a summer of hard work, the payoff is here: Flawless Hustle proudly presents Money Isn't Real , our first compilation. If there's one topic that's a constant in Hip-Hop is money. Whether heads are making it, spending it or stealing it, the scene (and our world) is obsessed with money. Hell, one of the reasons people hustle is to get loot, so we ourselves know the power of a dollar, which got us thinking: what the fuck is money, really? It's an interesting concept, and was a great jumping off point for this debut project, so [...]

Winter´s coming... and me no like. After more than five months of sunshine, wearing shorts and flipflops at all times, it´s kinda hard to adjust. Today was the first day I had to put on my trusted leather jacket, while inside the heater had to be turned on again. Last Saturday, it proved still possible to enjoy lunch outside, in shirtsleeves while sporting sunglasses, but now the weather has definitely turned. Living in a mediterranean climate, it would be hard to maintain that it´s colder than a witch´s tit, or even a well digger´s ass out there, but it sure [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Good things do come in small packages, and in the case of Emma Straub's slim novella Fly-Over State , so do great things. Straub's unique narrative voice is keen and nuanced, and after having read this book (plus every short story of hers I could find), I can safely predict she is a writer to watch with a strong literary future. Dan Chaon wrote of the book: [...]
Solstafir has issued the following recap of their recent tour dates: "Day Off: We arrived in a camping site somewhere in Germany at around midday. The sun was shining and the weather was nice. I really wanted to go for a walk and take some photos, but first I had to sort a few things out over the internet for my studies. As I was about to buy so... Photography by claudia susana Well, I was hosting a work sponsored Ride-To-Work for sustainability today, but unfortunately nasty wind, lots of rain, and some surprisingly chilly weather forced me to postpone it to Monday where the weather looks to be MUCH better. Bummer. I went ahead & suited up and rode in anyway, and man.. it was amazing. Wind pushing me all over the place, soaked to the bone, cold, really felt like a WARRIOR! RAWR!!! [...]

Running a night is risky business. I mean, most people find it hard to promote themselves let alone an event but then again promoters aren't most people. While us common folk balk at the prospect of losing money, dealing with weird DJ's or going to bed at 7am, promoters thrive on the pressure of flying in a psychedelic trance act from Brazil and making sure the shit doesn't hit the proverbial fan. To help them out, The Smirnoff Promoter Grants was created as an initiative to discover, support and celebrate aspiring nightlife promoters. Whether [...]
" Black Gives Way to Blue ," Alice in Chains ' first record in 14 years, as well as the first following Layne Staley's tragic death is out this week, making a lot of waves. Surprisingly or not, the record sounds very much like the Alice most of us came to know and love in the early '90s, contrary to most die hard fans' lamentations. It's a hard rock album, although you'll find quite a reasonable amount of more mellow songs, as well as acoustics. If trip-hop and ambient music is your cup of tea, you might [...]

Finally - the first update in a month! I've been kept away from the computer due to working pretty much non-stop at the CNE and TIFF, plus time spent out of town. I'll also admit I was a little burnt out after Summerworks. But my batteries are recharged, and there's plenty to delve into this week, so let's just dive right into it, shall we? Ah, but one note of importance: an earlier edition of the update, since corrected, mistakenly linked "Mimi: Or, a Poisoner's Comedy" writers Melody Johnson and Rick Roberts as wife [...]
