Royal Bangs out of Knoxville, Tennessee are one of my favorite bands out there right now. We've seen them a handful of times at Skull Alley and at Forecastle last year and each time they pick up more and more fans. They returned to Louisville last Friday and opened for The Whigs to a full house (they are touring with We Were Promised Jetpacks later this month). On top of having two amazing albums to tour with (We Breed Champions and Let it Beep), their live show is a must see. Picture a Man Man show, but [...]
The biggest bands in the world have a concept to promote their tour. U2 did Zoo TV and the 360 Tour , the Rolling Stones had A Bigger Bang ; so when Americana singer-songwriter Israel Nash Gripka and indie garage rockers The Fieros began planning their U.S. jaunt, they decided to be candid and "Sing For Their Supper." In March, the artists will set sail from New York City to the southern United States, stopping along the [...]

Since leaving the Drive-By Truckers to pursue a solo career, Alabaman Jason Isbell has gone from strength to strength. His debut album, Sirens of the Ditch is a fantastic alt.country record, and one of the best albums of the 00s. Follow-up Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit is just as good, and 2010 should see the release of his third album (his second with the 400 Unit). He took the time out of his heavy touring schedule to answer a few questions for yours truly. Here's what he had to say... Your [...]
This Spring will see the inaugural Hangout Music Festival bring an "eclectic lineup of 60-plus artists" to the Gulf Shores of Alabama. "We're shooting for the stars," found Shaul Zislin told Alabama Live upon announcing its creation in December. "We want the best that are available in the business to come here." Well, it took a little long than expected, but Mr. Zislin has returned to announce which of these stars will hanging out on from May 14-16. Among them include the now Grammy Award winning outfit the Zac Brown [...]

Damn this is going to be an amazing show. Royal Bangs , one of my favorite bands, will be at the Z Bar with The Whigs (also fantastic) on February 5th. Tickets are $12 and it is worth every penny. Click here to view the embedded video. Let's not forget that Columbus' Happy Chichester is one of the openers for Friday's RJD2/Donewaiting.com 7-year Anniversary show. If you're not hip to Happy (for shame!), he was in Columbus rock/funk act Royal Crescent Mob in the '80s and early '90s, fronted Howlin' Maggie til around 2002, was an original member of The Twilight Singers and also played often with Greg Dulli in The Afghan Whigs. So the dude has a pedigree. Happy does the solo thing now. His [...]
Nine months ago, I launched this site not knowing how it would be received, but I'm happy to say that January was our biggest month yet with nearly 30,000 music lovers from across the world exploring some great new songs. Back in December, we went on winter hiatus, so I thought it made sense to combine the past two months into one Rewind. Here are the 43 MP3s from new and upcoming releases we featured in December and January in one two convenient .zip file downloads: [tweetmeme] Click here [...]

Here's my ultimate music festival and it would be either on a remote island, or at Golden Gate Park in August. There are old and new, alive and dead, and everything in between, so I can only dream. Oh yeah, there would only be 500 people because that way I am less likely to be standing next to the drunk girl that keeps talking, the guy with his shirt off pointing his index finger randomly in the air, or the couple that just ate some chocolates and laughs at everything slow and dark. I am truly excited about [...]

It looks like In the Dark , the new record on ATO Records from The Whigs , has been pushed back to a March 16 release date, but along with this news of a push-back comes news of more tour dates! This time they're heading out on the road with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club . Though all tour dates are far out to the west right now, there should be additional tour dates announced soon. Currently scheduled dates are all posted after the jump. The Whigs tour dates: [...]
The Whigs announced that In the Dark , their follow up to the massive Mission Control , will be released on 3/16. Touring for the record will start as openers for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in late February, SXSW this year (yipppee!), a co-headlining tour, (the other "co" of "co-headlining" hasn't been announced yet), in late March, as well as a stop by Late Night with David Letterman on 3/31. Seems like a lot but given how much they toured for Mission Control , you know this is them just [...]

words & photos by Dominick Mastrangelo Given that most of their gear was already on the stage, one would have thought the interim between opener James Dean Wells (of the Gay Blades) and headliner The Heavy on Saturday (1/16) would have been rather brief. The whirring of noise that begins "If I Were Going" from the Afghan Whigs classic "Gentlemen" came on the 92Y Tribeca loudspeakers and, despite a solid set, Wells had done little [...]

It's always hard to write about those you know, but despite knowing far too much about the members of Diehard, it's difficult to not let the edges of a smile cross my face each time I hear them. Awash in a flash of flannel and more than a touch of cardigan, their male/female indie pop recalls an era's worth of 90's stalwarts like wrapping your arms around old friends. Plowing through shared loves of Afghan Whigs and Superchunk and cascading like the first rising waves of unrequited crush; their EP Oh So Premiere is a sincere return [...]
Jack Endino made his name as one of the go-to producers in the Pacific northwest. He's worked with the likes of Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan, Hot Hot Heat, Soundgarden, The Afghan Whigs, L7, and Zeke. His most famous work however, remains Nirvana's debut Bleach. On February 2nd Endino returns with Fell for the Gift, the debut from his own band Kandi Coded. The music has a metallic edge with a
The Dodos played "Fables" on Late Night with David Letterman this past Friday night. The Dodos - Fables on David Letterman HD 1080p [YouTube] That's not a bad way to make your network television debut, although it would have been cooler if they were bathed in confetti like the official video for the song.
